Quantitative study of Scarpa's ganglion and vestibular sense organs in endolymphatic hydrops.

The density of vestibular hair cells and the number of neurons in Scarpa's ganglion were estimated for 11 temporal bones with endolymphatic hydrops. The ten subjects from which these bones were taken all exhibited decreased caloric response (when tested), fluctuating hearing loss, and episodic vertigo. The degeneration of vestibular sense organs was found within the "normal" range for all except one case, which showed total degeneration of the posterior crista ampullaris. Ganglion cell counts in all cases were low. In three of the ten subjects, counts fell below the lowest values seen in a sam

[Optokinetic reactivity and vestibular disorders of central origin (author's transl)].

An electronystagmographic study of optokinetic reactivity is conducted in 50 'normal' adult subjects and 200 patients suffering from various diseases, all of whom presented an abnormal electronystagmogram. Optokinetic reactivity is evoked by a sudden acceleration of the optokinetic stimulus. It is considered normal when this acceleration leads to an increase in amplitude. At the same time, the frequency of the optokinetic nystagmus decreases. This type of response can be modified by various disorders. Recent cranial trauma and tetany are associated with an incomplete or inadequate optokinetic

Permanent effects of low frequency vibration on the vestibular system.

Among 49 male workers, mean age 30 years, who had been working in conditions of extreme noise and vibration for between 6 months and 10 years vestibular disturbances could be shown (in the form of spontaneous nystagmus, lowered caloric excitability, or pathology in rotatory tests) in as high as 44.9%. The lesions were believed to have arisen in the peripheral vestibular organ as a consequence of the low frequency vibration.

Maternal Gait as a Potential Scaffold for Rhythm Processing: A Predictive Processing Network Model.

Humans uniquely perceive periodic structure in complex rhythms and spontaneously move to music-abilities rare among animals. Though training and experience contribute to our sense of rhythm, basic beat perception and the urge to move to rhythm are present even in young infants. But might prenatal experience play an essential role in shaping these faculties? We propose that maternal gait during pregnancy may provide scaffolding for rhythm development through correlated auditory-vestibular inputs that train predictive neural circuits. We implemented a recurrent predictive coding network with par

Peripheral and central vestibular neuromodulation improve postural control in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: a randomized, sham-controlled, multi-arm intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) features structural spinal deformity and impaired postural control, which may be associated with altered vestibular function and multisensory integration. Neuromodulatory approaches such as noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) and high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) have shown promise in enhancing balance in healthy and older populations. However, whether peripheral and cortical vestibular neuromodulation exert distinct or combined effects on postural control in AIS remains unknown. This study aimed to comp

Balance control threshold to vestibular stimuli.

Bipedalism renders our erect posture unstable, requiring the integration and processing of multisensory information to remain upright. To understand how each sense contributes to balance, perceptual thresholds to isolated sensory disturbances while standing are typically quantified. Perception, however, is distinct from balance control. Both processes rely on distinct internal body representations, and participants can misattribute the consequences of self-generated balance-correcting actions as an external perturbation. Here, we used signal detection theory to quantify non-perceptual balance

Convergence of vestibular and proprioceptive signals in the cerebellar nodulus/uvula enhances the encoding of self-motion in primates.

The integration of different sensory streams is required to dynamically estimate how our head and body are oriented and moving relative to gravity. This process is essential to continuously maintain stable postural control, autonomic regulation, and self-motion perception. The nodulus/uvula (NU) in the posterior cerebellar vermis is known to integrate canal and otolith vestibular input to signal angular and linear head motion in relation to gravity. However, estimating body orientation and motion requires integrating proprioceptive cues with vestibular signals. Lesion studies demonstrate that

[Association between sleep disorders and vestibular vertigo].

Sleep disorders have a high comorbidity rate with vestibular diseases. The results of some small sample clinical studies have confirmed the effect of sleep deprivation on vestibular function. However, the mechanism of the effect of sleep disorder on vestibular system is still unclear. This article analyzes the possible mechanism of the effect of sleep disorders on vestibular function from the aspects of neuroanatomy and neurotransmitters, and summarizes the relationship between sleep disorder and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, Meniere's disease, vestibular migraine and other diseases.

Presence of endolymphatic hydrops on listening difficulties in patients with normal hearing level.

BACKGROUND: Listening difficulties (LiD) present difficulties in listening and paying attention to spoken information despite normal pure tone audiometry. Endolymphatic hydrops (EH) is a common inner ear condition associated with Ménière's disease but may also be present in the asymptomatic ear. OBJECTIVES: Using magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated EH in patients with LiD and assessed whether the severity of EH was related to the results of auditory processing tests (APTs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: 111 patients with no abnormalities on pure tone audiometry, but displaying difficulties

Vestibular Dysfunction Secondary to Reactivation of the Neurotropic Virus VZV After COVID-19: A Case Study.

BACKGROUND The novel coronavirus COVID-19 infection, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO) in March 2020. As of April 14, 2021, the virus has impacted the lives of over 138 million lives globally, with hundreds of thousands more impacted each day. COVID-19 has resulted in a multitude of clinical manifestations such as respiratory pathology, cardiovascular complications, and neurological dysfunction, and recent evidence points to potential changes in vestibular function secondary to COVID-19 infection. CASE REPORT We present the ca

An Exploratory Study of Cervical Vestibular-Evoked Myogenic Potential in Users of Personal Listening Devices.

CONTEXT: The use of personal listening devices (PLDs) is becoming increasingly popular, particularly among young people. Numerous studies have demonstrated that being exposed to PLDs can have adverse effects on the auditory system. Owing to the similarities between the auditory and vestibular systems, it is possible that the negative effects of PLD use may extend to the vestibular system, an area that has not been extensively studied. AIM: The study aimed to investigate the impact of exposure to PLDs on the vestibular system, specifically the sacculo-collic reflex assessed by the cervical ves

The Long and Winding Road-Vestibular Efferent Anatomy in Mice.

The precise functional role of the Efferent Vestibular System (EVS) is still unclear, but the auditory olivocochlear efferent system has served as a reasonable model on the effects of a cholinergic and peptidergic input on inner ear organs. However, it is important to appreciate the similarities and differences in the structure of the two efferent systems, especially within the same animal model. Here, we examine the anatomy of the mouse EVS, from its central origin in the Efferent Vestibular Nucleus (EVN) of the brainstem, to its peripheral terminations in the vestibular organs, and we compar
