A case of posterior scleritis: differential diagnosis of ocular pain.

Posterior scleritis is a rare cause of ocular pain, due to scleral inflammation, presenting with periocular pain, pain on movement and decreased vision. Although anterior scleritis may be associated with this condition, ocular signs may be absent. We report a case of posterior scleritis, presenting with right-sided ocular and periocular pain, exacerbated by ocular movements, irradiating to the ipsilateral temple and zygoma, not associated with visual disturbances at onset. Diagnosis was made with ultrasonography and confirmed by brain and orbital MRI. Differential diagnosis of facial pain, in

Color vision-associated environmental and biological factors in the development of myopia.

As a global public health problem, myopia has attracted more and more attention for its high prevalence and severe visual impairment. Although extensive research on the risk factors for myopia has been conducted, the underlying pathogenesis is still unclear. Color vision, mediated by retinal cone cells, is a fundamental and important component of human visual functions. Indeed, numerous studies implicate color vision-associated environmental and biological factors in myopia pathogenesis, indicating that related interventions may delay myopia progression. Studies have shown that color vision ca

A Duration-Dependent Interaction Between High-Intensity Light and Unrestricted Vision in the Drive for Myopia Control.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the duration-dependent and synergetic impact of high-intensity light (HL) and unrestricted vision (UnV) on lens-induced myopia (LIM) development in chickens. METHODS: Myopia was induced in one eye in chicks (10 groups, n = 126) from day 1 posthatching (D1) until day 8 (D8) using -10 diopter (D) lenses. Fellow eyes remained uncovered as controls. Nine groups were exposed daily to 2, 4, or 6 hours of HL (15,000 lux), UnV (removal of -10 D lens), or both (HL + UnV). One group served as the LIM group without any interventions. Ocular axial length (AL), refractive error, and c

Effects of Extended Viewing Distance on Accommodative Response and Pupil Size of Myopic Adults by Using a Double-Mirror System.

Purposes: This study discussed the accommodative response and pupil size of myopic adults using a double-mirror system (DMS). The viewing distance could be extended to 2.285 m by using a DMS, which resulted in a reduction and increase in the accommodative response and pupil size, respectively. By using a DMS, the reduction of the accommodative response could improve eye fatigue with near work. Method: Sixty subjects aged between 18 and 22 years old were recruited in this study, and the average age was 20.67 ± 1.09. There were two main steps in the experimental process. In the first step, we ex

The Rostock Method for Qualitative and Quantitative Evaluation of Intraocular Lenses.

BACKGROUND: For quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the imaging properties of IOLs, axial cross-sectional images can be obtained from the 3-dimensional light distribution by means of an optical bench, as is known from light sheet recordings in fluorescein baths. This paper presents a new image-processing algorithm to enhance the quality of generated axial cross-sectional images, and the two methods are then compared. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The 3-dimensional point spread function of a diffractive trifocal IOL (AT LISA tri 839MP, Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) was recorded on an op

Vision-related symptoms, accommodative and binocular vision performance in young diabetics vs. normal controls.

PURPOSE: To compare accommodative and binocular vision performance between young diabetic subjects and normal controls, and to investigate the correlation of accommodative/binocular indices with the severity of diabetes. METHODS: Thirty young subjects with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 30 age-matched normal controls were recruited in this hospital-based cross-sectional study. DM was diagnosed by a haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) higher than 6.5%. The status of vision-related symptoms was examined by the convergence insufficiency symptoms survey (CISS). All participants underwent a complete optometric ex

The optic pathway: the development of an eLearning animation.

The optic pathway is responsible for sending visual information from the eyes to the brain via electrical impulses. It is essential that a sound understanding of this pathway is established in order to determine an accurate diagnosis concerning visual field defects. Although easy for trained neurologists to understand, it is an area which medical students repeatedly struggle to visualise. It is proposed that audio-visual teaching resources can improve students understanding of complex areas of importance. This article describes the development and evaluation of a short animation created for us

Vignetting and field of view with the KAMRA corneal inlay.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the KAMRA corneal inlay on the retinal image brightness in the peripheral visual field. METHODS: A KAMRA inlay was "implanted" into a theoretical eye model in a corneal depth of 200 microns. Corneal radius was varied to a steep, normal, and flat (7.37, 7.77, and 8.17 mm) version keeping the proportion of anterior to posterior radius constant. Pupil size was varied from 2.0 to 5.0 mm. Image brightness was determined for field angles from -70° to 70° with and without KAMRA and proportion of light attenuation was recorded. RESULTS: In our parameter space, the

[Amblyopia due to ametropia].

The cause of amblyopia by ametropia is evaluated, hypoaccommodation plays an important role and also astigmatism. The treatment of hypermetropia by full spectacle correction is contested and the tests used to detect amblyopia and hypoaccommodation are described. The use of videorefraction and photoscreening is important in the follow-up of our patients.

Reduced visual acuity in both eyes of monocularly deprived kittens following a short or long period of reverse occlusion.

While there can be substantial recovery of vision during reverse occlusion in the deprived eye of kittens that have been monocularly deprived from birth, in many situations this visual improvement does not appear to be retained following the introduction of binocular visual input. This study examines the consequences of periods of reverse occlusion whose onset and duration would be thought to maximize the opportunity for good and permanent recovery of vision in the initially deprived eye. Twenty kittens were monocularly deprived from near birth to either 4, 5, or 6 weeks of age and then revers

Accommodation demand and deprivation in kitten ocular development.

The effects of accommodation demand and deprivation on the development of ocular optics was investigated in four groups of kittens (total n = 29). Group 1 consisted of five normal kittens; group 2 (nine kittens) had monocular radial keratotomy to induce relative hypermetropia and more accommodation demand as well as to impart interocular refractive differences (anisometropia); group 3 (eight kittens) received daily monocular atropine; and group 4 (seven kittens) had binocular radial keratotomy combined with daily monocular atropine. Regular examination provided documentation of ocular developm

Genetic dissection of the Drosophila nervous system by means of mosaics.

Given a mutant having abnormal behavior, the anatomical domain responsible for the deficit may be identified by the use of genetic mosaicism. Individuals may be produced in which a portion of the body is mutant male while the rest is normal female. In such sex mosaics, or gynandromorphs, the division line between normal and mutant parts can occur in various orientations. Mutants of five different genes (cistrons) on the X-chromosome of Drosophila melanogaster, having various abnormalities in visual function, have been tested by this method. All of these have been found to be autonomous, i.e.,

Ocular toxoplasmosis in HIV infection.

Toxoplasmosis accounts for 1-3% of ocular infections in patients with AIDS1. There are a variety of clinical manifestations that can be confused with other ocular disease. It may be the first manifestations of intracranial and disseminated Toxoplasma gondii infection. Prompt recognition and early treatment with antiparasitic drug therapy will prevent widespread tissue destruction, preserve vision and reduce dissemination. This current review will provide a broad-based overview of toxoplasmosis and ocular infection.
