Prevalence of vision, hearing, and combined vision and hearing impairments in patients with hip fractures.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To examine the prevalence of hearing and vision impairments in 65+ year-old patients with hip fractures. BACKGROUND: Many older people believe sensory problems are inevitable and thus avoid medical assessment and assistance. Furthermore, health professionals often overlook sensory problems, though it is known that sensory impairments can increase the risk of falling and sustaining hip fractures. DESIGN: A prospective, observational study. METHODS: We admitted 544 consecutive patients to an orthogeriatric ward from October 2004-July 2006; 332 were screened for study incl

Investigation of the visual cytoscreening of conventional gynecologic smears. II. Analysis of eye movement.

The perception of visual information in cytoscreening was studied: eye movements were recorded while the cytotechnologist was screening cervical smears by means of a projection screen. Four phases of eye movement could be distinguished: small, aimless movements during the stage movement; a latency period with a duration of about 180 milliseconds; saccadic movement to the position of an object; and fixation on an object. These components explain the two-phase behavior of cytoscreening found in our previous investigations of the stage movement. Visual perception during the period of latency was

[Fechner's paradox, a binocular vision test].

Fechner's paradox is a visual phenomenon which may be summarized as follows: a subject looks at an illuminated screen in binocular vision; one of the eyes is provided with a photometric neutral filter (density 1,3), the other eye remaining uncovered. When the uncovered eye is covered by means of a cover-test, the apparent luminosity of the viewing screen seems to decrease; but when the eye with the filter is covered by the cover-test, the apparent luminosity of the screen seems to increase: this fact is apparently paradoxical, since a part of the luminous stimulus of the eyes was suppressed: t

OpthaNet: Attention-Integrated Architecture for High-Precision Multi-Class Ophthalmic Image Classification.

This study investigated the efficacy of pre-trained deep learning models for multi-class classification of eye diseases, namely cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma, using fundus images. Although CNN and transformer-based models have been extensively explored separately in ophthalmic diagnostics, a direct comparative analysis remains limited. Moreover, recent high-performing systems frequently rely on heavy backbones, ensembles, or large-scale domain pretraining, which can be impractical for resource-constrained screening pipelines. We evaluated three models, EfficientNetB3, MobileNetV

Utilization of a self-refracting system on the streets to improve vision in an urban unhoused population.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effectiveness of the USee self-refracting eyewear kit in an urban unhoused population and identify predictors of instances in which the USee does not improve vision. METHODS: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 110 patients (220 eyes) experiencing homelessness in Phoenix, Arizona, were evaluated before refractive correction (control) and after USee refraction. Visual acuity (VA) testing and USee refraction were performed in mobile outreach settings. Mixed-effects models were used to determine VA outcomes. USee failure was defined as USee-corrected visual a

Alternative audio-graphic method for presenting structural information in mathematical graphs designed for low-vision users.

Despite advances in assistive technologies, existing tools for teaching mathematics to students with low vision often fail to effectively convey structural information in graphs and function plots. Current methods, such as screen readers or magnifiers, are frequently limited in their ability to present complex visual data, leading to increased cognitive load and reduced learning efficiency. This article introduces the audio-graphic method designed to address these limitations by integrating audio feedback with graphical content. The method was implemented in an educational platform and evaluat

Population screening for glaucoma in UK: current recommendations and future directions.

Effective population screening for glaucoma would enable earlier diagnosis and prevention of irreversible vision loss. The UK National Screening Committee (NSC) recently published a review that examined the viability, effectiveness and appropriateness of a population-based screening programme for primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). In our article, we summarise the results of the review and discuss some future directions that may enable effective population screening for glaucoma in the future. Two key questions were addressed by the UK NSC review; is there a valid, accurate screening test for

Prevention and early intervention screening for inherited ocular diseases in Saudi Arabia: a national perspective.

Consanguineous marriages are common, particularly in Saudi Arabia, where approximately half of all marriages are consanguineous. The likelihood of autosomal recessive (AR) genetic abnormalities, especially rare diseases (RDs) that present long-term health issues, is significantly increased by this trend, making Inherited Ocular Diseases (IODs) a public health concern in Saudi Arabia. The common IODs include Primary Congenital Glaucoma (PCG), Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), and Leber Congenital Amaurosis (LCA). To date, there are no national initiatives for screening programs to detect, prevent, and

Routine blood tests and machine learning identify complications in high myopia.

High myopia can lead to cataract, glaucoma, retinal detachment, choroidal neovascularisation, and macular degeneration, causing irreversible vision loss. Imaging detects these complications, but population screening is limited by equipment, and specialist availability. Here we show that a machine learning model using routine blood test results identifies people at increased risk of complications related to high myopia during standard health examinations. We develop the model in a multicentre study of 10,661 participants and validate it in two independent cohorts. The model shows high accuracy

Computer-assisted reading of mammograms.

Techniques developed in computer vision and automated pattern recognition can be applied to assist radiologists in reading mammograms. With the introduction of direct digital mammography this will become a feasible approach. A radiologist in breast cancer screening can use findings of the computer as a second opinion, or as a pointer to suspicious regions. This may increase the sensitivity and specificity of screening programs, and it may avoid the need for double reading. In this paper methods which have been developed for automated detection of mammographic abnormalities are reviewed. Progra
