Unlocking Morphology: A Case Study of Morphological Knowledge Growth in a Deaf Student Using Computer-Delivered Intervention.

Morphological knowledge (MK), or awareness of word structure and morphemic relationships, is a critical component of literacy for students who are D/HH. However, it has been explored to a lesser extent than other literacy components, such as phonological awareness and vocabulary. This case study examined the responsiveness of an 11-year-old bilingual student who is deaf to a computer-delivered supplemental morphology intervention, the Morphological Analysis Pathway to Reading (MAP-R). Over 22 weeks, the student completed 22 online modules targeting derivational affixes and root-word relationsh…

[Thesaurus of pharmacist interventions associated with inappropriate proton pump inhibitors prescriptions].

OBJECTIVES: Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are the most effective drugs in the treatment of acid-related gastrointestinal disorders. Yet, many studies reported potential adverse drug reactions associated with long-term use. In order to reduce the rates of inappropriate PPI prescriptions and to improve patient safety, a tool aimed at guiding pharmacists to analyze PPI prescriptions was designed. It results in a thesaurus of clinical situations designed to argue about the inappropriateness of some PPI prescriptions and to highlight the risk associated with them. METHODS: Clinical situations in wh

Oral Language Acquisition in Preschool Children Who are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing.

The purpose of this study was to compare developmental trajectories of oral language acquisition of children who are deaf and hard of hearin … ills were lower for children who are DHH than for children with typical hearing at study entry. For vocabulary, children who are DHH demonstrated growth over the two years but did not close the gap in performance over time. For morphosyntax, specifically verb tense marking, children who are DHH demonstrated growth over preschool, becoming more adult-like in …

Post-treatment reading development in children with dyslexia: the challenge remains.

The goal of this study was to examine the post-treatment development of word and pseudoword accuracy and fluency and its cognitive and linguistic predictors in Dutch children with dyslexia compared with typical readers in the upper primary grades. Word and pseudoword reading accuracy and fluency were assessed at the start and end of grade 5 and at the end of grade 6. Phonological awareness, rapid naming, verbal short-term memory, vocabulary, and visual attention span were assessed at the start of grade 5. Repeated measures ANOVAs revealed that children with dyslexia were less accurate than typ…

Implementing Evidence-Based Practice: Selecting Treatment Words to Boost Phonological Learning.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries arises from an ecological imbalance within a complex community. How chronic social context relates to ecological heterogeneity and dysbiosis-associated microbial shifts in school-age children remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations of left-behind status and caries burden with the salivary microbiome and to explore a two-hit ecological framework linking social context to caries-associated microbial shifts. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, 127 rural children were classified using a 2 × 2 framework based on left-behind status and caries burden

CATEGORICAL DIAGNOSIS OF EXTREME HYPERACTIVITY, IMPULSIVITY, AND INATTENTION IN VERY YOUNG CHILDREN.

Severe hyperactivity and impulsivity are common reasons for referral to infant mental health services. Past versions of ZERO TO THREE's () diagnostic nosology, the Diagnostic Classification of Mental and Developmental Disorders in Infancy and Early Childhood (DC:0-3), did not address this clinical issue because it had been addressed in other nosologies. These general diagnostic nosologies describe attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), but with little attention to developmentally specific aspects of the diagnosis in very young children. Categorical diagnosis related to hyperactivity

[Special medical terminology in Italian and in French: the model for drug factsheets].

Drug factsheets (DF) provide an interesting model for the evaluation of medical-popular texts in Italian and other languages. In this research 50 DF in Italian and the 50 corresponding DF in French were studied, offering a reasoned analysis of the modalities of presentation of medical-scientific information in two neo-Latin languages and a systematic comparison of the technical features of use of Italian and French medical languages. Basic parameters identified for evaluation were the following: length of texts, length of sentences, clarity of information, hierarchy of information, readability

A study of base frequency in Spanish skilled and reading-disabled children: all children benefit from morphological processing in defining complex pseudowords.

In this study, the base frequency (BF) effect is explored in reading-disabled and skilled readers of Spanish. A pseudoword definition task was completed by two groups of children. The pseudowords were composed from existing stems and affixes. The results show a facilitatory BF effect, suggesting that all children benefited from this aspect of morphology. A significant effect of group was also observed, showing that skilled readers scored better than reading-disabled children. The interaction between these variables was not significant. The overall pattern of data suggests that all children ben

Treatment of semantic verb classes in aphasia: acquisition and generalization effects.

Verb retrieval difficulties are common in aphasia; however, few successful treatments have been documented (e.g. Conroy, P., Sage, K., & Lambon Ralph, M. A. (2006) . Towards theory-driven therapies for aphasic verb impairments: A review of current theory and practice. Aphasiology, 20, 1159-1185). This study investigated the efficacy of a novel verb retrieval treatment in two individuals with aphasia who experience verb retrieval difficulty. It involved training verb classes with large (e.g. cut verbs) and limited (e.g. contact verbs) sets of semantic features. Based on action representation th

Assessing the impact of musculoskeletal health conditions using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health.

PURPOSE: To propose the joint use of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and to illustrate this proposal using musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions. METHOD: In light of the MSK conditions as classified in the ICD, categories from existing ICF core sets for MSK conditions were pooled to specify functioning. Another approach was to consider other categories from measures or instruments already linked in the literature. RESULTS: ICF Categories have been pooled from six core sets for MSK conditions, two s

Adaptive changes in grain-size in morphological processing.

Substantial neurobiological data indicate that the dominant cortical region for printed-word recognition shifts from a temporo-parietal (dorsal) to an occipito-temporal (ventral) locus with increasing recognition experience. The circuits also have different characteristic speeds of response and word preferences. Previous evidence suggested that grain-size increased with word repetition. In the present experiment, we examined morpheme boundaries imposing a limitation on steadily increasing grain-size within a word. We manipulated the type font within a word so that it either emphasized or disgu

Developmental differences in the effects of phonological, lexical and semantic variables on word learning by infants.

The influence of phonological (i.e., individual sounds), lexical (i.e., whole-word forms) and semantic (i.e., meaning) characteristics on the words known by infants age 1.4 to 2.6 was examined, using an existing database (Dale & Fenson, 1996). For each noun, word frequency, two phonological (i.e., positional segment average, biphone average), two lexical (i.e., neighborhood density, word length) and four semantic variables (i.e., semantic set size, connectivity, probability resonance, resonance strength) were computed. Regression analyses showed that more infants knew (1) words composed of low

Pronouns in marital interaction.

Recent studies in social psychology have found that the frequency of certain words in people's speech and writing is related to psychological aspects of their personal health. We investigated whether counts of "self" and "other" pronouns used by 59 couples engaged in a problem-solving discussion were related to indices of marital health. One spouse in each couple had a diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder or panic disorder with agoraphobia; 50% of the patients and 40% of their spouses reported marital dissatisfaction. Regardless of patients' diagnostic status, spouses who used more secon

Moving ahead in language: observations on a report of precocious language development in 3-4 year old children with spinal muscular atrophy type II.

Benony and Benony in a recent issue of this Journal have presented new data on the precocity of language acquisition in children with type II spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), at age 36-47 months. They refer to our interim report of advanced early language development in these motor-impaired children, which covers the age period 18-35 months. Here, we provide more details of our findings and discuss them in relation to their report and our theory of the role of the procedural system in language learning.

Magnetic stimulation studies of foveal representation.

The right and left visual fields each project to the contralateral cerebral hemispheres, but the extent of the functional overlap of the two hemifields along the vertical meridian is still under debate. After presenting the spatial, temporal, and functional specifications of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), we show that TMS is particularly suitable to study the question of foveal representation as it allows one to study the effects of selective disruption of left or right hemisphere functions on the processing of centrally presented stimuli. Future strategies for the use of TMS in furt

Valence of distractor words increases the effects of irrelevant speech on serial recall.

Participants memorized target words in silence or while ignoring neutral or valent (positive or negative) distractor words that could be either possessor-relevant or other-relevant. Distractor words impaired recall performance, but valent distractor words caused more disruption than neutral distractors, and negative distractors caused more disruption than positive distractors. The results are problematic for explanations of the irrelevant speech effect within working memory models that do not specify an explicit role of attention in the maintenance of information for immediate serial recall.

Discourse-based intervention for word finding in children.

UNLABELLED: A discourse-based, contextual intervention approach for increasing children's word finding proficiency was evaluated. The clinician's role was to (a) identify overt word finding behaviors as they occurred, (2) allow their completion, and (c) provide appropriate feedback, including requests for associative information, requests for clarification, comments to confirm the appropriateness of word choices, and comments to facilitate discourse restructuring. Subjects were three 9-year-old boys with diagnosed language-learning disabilities (LLD) characterized by word finding problems. Int
