The role of the kynurenine pathway in the pathophysiology of autism-like phenotype induced by maternal inflammation in male mice.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with core symptoms that may include deficits in communication, social challenges, and repetitive/stereotyped behavior. The etiology of ASD is not well defined, but both genetic and environmental risk factors have been identified. In animal models, prenatal maternal immune activation precipitates the development of a behavioral phenotype resembling ASD, but the mechanisms by which this occurs are not fully understood. Inflammation can upregulate the kynurenine pathway metabolism through the enzyme indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase-1 (IDO

The effects of deep-reaching lesions in the cortical face area on phonation. A combined case report and experimental monkey study.

The present study compares the phonatory ability of a patient with a deep-reaching left-sided lesion in the region of the cortical face area with that of two squirrel monkeys in which the patient's lesion has been reduplicated bilaterally. The lesion involved Broca's area, the inferior pre- and postcentral cortex, rolandic operculum, inferior parietal cortex insula, claustrum, parts of the putamen and white matter underlying the inferior frontoparietal and insular cortex. While the squirrel monkey did not show any phonatory deficits, the patient became aphonic for more than 10 weeks following

Behavioural changes in aposematic Heliconius melpomene butterflies in response to their predatory bird calls.

Prey-predator interactions have resulted in the evolution of many anti-predatory traits. One of them is the ability for prey to listen to predators and avoid them. Although prey anti-predatory behavioural responses to predator auditory cues are well described in a wide range of taxa, studies on whether butterflies change their behaviours in response to their predatory calls are lacking. Heliconius butterflies are unpalatable and form Müllerian mimicry rings as morphological defence strategies against their avian predators. Like many other butterflies in the Nymphalidae family, some Heliconius

Characterization of rat ultrasonic vocalization in the orofacial formalin test: Influence of the social context.

Rats emit ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) about 22 kHz and 50 kHz sound frequency to communicate the presence of negative or positive emotional states, respectively. The calling behavior may be influenced by several factors, including environmental factors. Likewise, pain behavior can be modulated according to the social context, and also can be transferred to conspecifics through direct observation and/or social interaction. Herein we investigated if acute pain induction was related to changes in emission of aversive and appetitive calls and how different social contexts affected the nocicept

Neuroendocrine control of seasonal plasticity in the auditory and vocal systems of fish.

Seasonal changes in reproductive-related vocal behavior are widespread among fishes. This review highlights recent studies of the vocal plainfin midshipman fish, Porichthys notatus, a neuroethological model system used for the past two decades to explore neural and endocrine mechanisms of vocal-acoustic social behaviors shared with tetrapods. Integrative approaches combining behavior, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy, and gene expression methodologies have taken advantage of simple, stereotyped and easily quantifiable behaviors controlled by discrete neural networks in this mod

Auditory cortex of squirrel monkey: response patterns of single cells to species-specific vocalizations.

Most of the neurons tested in the superior temporal cortex of awake squirrel monkeys responded to recorded species-specific vocalizations. Some cells responded with temporally complex patterns to many vocalizations. Other cells responded with simpler patterns to only one call. Most cells lay between these two extremes. On-line deletion of parts of a vocalization revealed the role of temporal interactions in determining the nature of some responses.

Vocal cord paralysis caused by stingray.

Foreign bodies in the oral cavity and pharynx are commonly encountered in the emergency room and outpatient departments, and the most frequently observed of these foreign bodies are fish bones. Among the possible complications resulting from a pharyngeal foreign body, vocal cord fixation is extremely rare, with only three cases previously reported in the English literature. The mechanisms of vocal cord fixation can be classified into mechanical articular fixation, direct injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, or recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis secondary to inflammation. The case discusse

Effects of nerve-muscle pedicle on immobile rat vocal folds in the presence of partial innervation.

OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether implantation of an ansa cervicalis nerve (ACN)-muscle pedicle into the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle is efficacious in the presence of partial recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) innervation. METHODS: We studied a total of 36 rats. Twelve of the rats served as positive and negative control animals. In the remaining 24 rats, the left RLN was transected, a 1-mm piece of nerve was removed, and the stumps were abutted in silicone tubes (STs), inducing partial RLN regeneration. Twelve of the ST-treated rats underwent this procedure alone, and the other 12 rats had a ne

Nanofibrillar conductive hydrogel adhesive for soft bioelectronic interfaces.

Conventional hydrogels often fail to simultaneously balance the mechanical resilience, tissue adhesion, and electrical conductivity-key requirements for reliable soft bioelectronic interfaces in monitoring scenarios. In this study, we introduce a conductive nanofibrillar double-network hydrogel adhesive that enables real-time, long-term monitoring of human motion and physiological signals, including electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG), and lung respiration. The double-network matrix, coupled with silver nanoparticle-doped protein nanofibrils, facilitates tunable mechanical proper

The effects of aging and sex on detection of ultrasonic vocalizations by adult CBA/CaJ mice (Mus musculus).

Mice are frequently used as animal models for human hearing research, yet their auditory capabilities have not been fully explored. Previous studies have established auditory threshold sensitivities for pure tone stimuli in CBA/CaJ mice using ABR and behavioral methodologies. Little is known about how they perceive their own ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), and nothing is known about how aging influences this perception. The aim of the present study was to establish auditory threshold sensitivity for several USV types, as well as to track these thresholds across the mouse's lifespan. In order

Modeling measured glottal volume velocity waveforms.

The source-filter theory of speech production describes a glottal energy source (volume velocity waveform) that is filtered by the vocal tract and radiates from the mouth as phonation. The characteristics of the volume velocity waveform, the source that drives phonation, have been estimated, but never directly measured at the glottis. To accomplish this measurement, constant temperature anemometer probes were used in an in vivo canine constant pressure model of phonation. A 3-probe array was positioned supraglottically, and an endoscopic camera was positioned subglottically. Simultaneous recor

Plasticity in auditory cortex during parenthood.

Most animals display robust parental behaviors that support the survival and well-being of their offspring. The manifestation of parental behaviors is accompanied by physiological and hormonal changes, which affect both the body and the brain for better care giving. Rodents exhibit a behavior called pup retrieval - a stereotyped sequence of perception and action - used to identify and retrieve their newborn pups back to the nest. Pup retrieval consists of a significant auditory component, which depends on plasticity in the auditory cortex (ACx). We review the evidence of neural changes taking

Functional Evaluation of Larynx Nerve Stimulator With EMG Acquisition Capability and Wireless Connectivity.

Recently, an electrical stimulation of the paralyzed muscle, as a potential therapy for restoring function of a denervated muscle system, has been debated as an innovative treatment in the management of patients with laryngeal paralysis. Numerous studies in acute and chronic animal models have demonstrated that electrical stimulation of the paralyzed posterior cricoarytenoideus muscle (PCA) offers an approach to induce vocal fold abduction and restore ventilation through the glottis. The study aims to test applicability of the controlled opening of the rima glottides via direct electrical stim

Efficient gene transfer into zebra finch germline-competent stem cells using an adenoviral vector system.

Zebra finch is a representative animal model for studying the molecular basis of human disorders of vocal development and communication. Accordingly, various functional studies of zebra finch have knocked down or introduced foreign genes in vivo; however, their germline transmission efficiency is remarkably low. The primordial germ cell (PGC)-mediated method is preferred for avian transgenic studies; however, use of this method is restricted in zebra finch due to the lack of an efficient gene transfer method for the germline. To target primary germ cells that are difficult to transfect and man

Post-natal development of the envelope following response to amplitude modulated sounds in the bat Phyllostomus discolor.

Bats use a large repertoire of calls for social communication, which are often characterized by temporal amplitude and frequency modulations. As bats are considered to be among the few mammalian species capable of vocal learning, the perception of temporal sound modulations should be crucial for juvenile bats to develop social communication abilities. However, the post-natal development of auditory processing of temporal modulations has not been investigated in bats, so far. Here we use the minimally invasive technique of recording auditory brainstem responses to measure the envelope following

Alcohol-Responsive Hyperkinetic Movement Disorders-a Mechanistic Hypothesis.

Patients with essential tremor, vocal tremor, torticollis, myoclonus-dystonia and posthypoxic myoclonus often benefit in a surprisingly rapid and robust manner from ingestion of a modest amount of alcohol (ethanol). Despite considerable investigation, the mechanism of ethanol's ability to produce this effect remains a mystery. In this paper, we review the pharmacology of ethanol and its analogue GHB (or sodium oxybate), summarize the published literature of alcohol-responsive hyperkinetic movement disorders, and demonstrate videos of patients we have treated over the last fifteen years with ei

Blind oral endotracheal intubation of rats using a ventilator to verify correct placement.

Endotracheal intubation in rats is challenging due to difficulties visualizing the epiglottis and vocal cords. No visualization of these structures results in repeated intubation attempts which can cause trauma to the oral cavity and/or oesophagus, and death of the animal due to respiratory failure. Here, we describe a simple blind oral tracheal intubation technique in the rat that decreases the frequency of repeated intubations using an intubation device that comprises a 16 G intravenous catheter and a modified 18 G epidural needle, and a rodent ventilator. The epidural needle is bent in such

[Surgery of the recurrent nerve. Studies on the problem of functional rehabilitation after recurrent nerve injuries].

One of the most important problems involved in rehabilitation surgery of the recurrent nerve arises from the fact that this nerve carries fibers displaying antagonistic activities which is an accordance with the different functions of the larynx as an organ of phonation, respiration and swallowing. As a consequence of random reinnervation of the internal laryngeal musculature taking place after reconstruction of the N. recurrens, the complicated sequence of vocal cord movements, varying with the different functions of the larynx, cannot be restituted in its proper order. To avoid such function
