White dot syndromes in the era of multimodal imaging.

White dot syndromes comprise a heterogeneous group of inflammatory chorioretinal disorders historically hampered by overlapping clinical presentations and inconsistent nomenclature. Recent advances in multimodal imaging have fundamentally reshaped our understanding of these entities, enabling precise localization of tissue injury and revealing distinct pathogenic signatures across the disease spectrum. In this review, we discuss the different non-infectious posterior uveitides, formerly called "white dot syndromes", organized according to the primary anatomical locus of inflammatory injury: ph…

An update of multimodal imaging in white dot syndrome.

The white dot syndromes are a group of phenotypically similar disorders characterized by multiple lesions at the level of the outer retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid. Common white dot syndromes whose imaging modalities have been described in this article are multiple evanescent white dot syndrome, acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy, acute zonal occult outer retinopathy, multifocal choroiditis and panuveitis, punctate inner choroidopathy, serpiginous choroiditis, and birdshot chorioretinopathy. The various imaging modalities help us to better understand the …

White Matter Hyperintensities as a Predictor of Aphasia Recovery.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relation between baseline white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and change in naming, content production, and efficiency after treatment in subacute aphasia. We hypothesized that more severe baseline WMH would result in less improvement with treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of a cohort from a double-blind randomized controlled trial (RCT). SETTING: Outpatient clinical setting or participant home. PARTICIPANTS: We retrospectively reviewed imaging and behavioral data for 52 participants with subacute aphasia due to left-hemisphere ischemic stroke enrolled in t…

Recent progress on the functionalization of white phosphorus in China.

Direct synthesis of organophosphorus compounds from white phosphorus represents a significant but challenging subject, especially in the context of ongoing efforts to comprehensively improve the phosphorus-derived chemical industry driven by sustainability and safety concerns. China is the world's largest producer of white phosphorus, creating a significant demand for the green transformation of this crucial feedstock. This review provides an overview of advancements in white phosphorus activation by Chinese research teams, focusing on the direct construction of P‒C/N/O/S/M bonds from white ph…

Discussion of Surgical Indications: The Black, White, and Gray.

Chest wall trauma is rapidly evolving and now represents a multidisciplinary field with incredible growth in research and surgical intervention; however, even with more than 800 publications on chest wall trauma to date, surgical indications are not black and white. Injury patterns need to be better defined and outcome measurements need to evolve for accurate longer term functional assessment of patients if this field of surgery is to move beyond historical indications for operative intervention. This essay will communicate what is known about operative indications in a way that stratifies the…

Sleep and White Matter in Adults with Down Syndrome.

Adults with Down syndrome are at a high risk for disordered sleep. These sleep problems could have marked effects on aging and Alzheimer's disease, potentially altering white matter integrity. This study examined the associations between disordered sleep assessed via an actigraph accelerometer worn on 7 consecutive nights, presence of diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea, and diffusion tensor imaging indices of white matter integrity in 29 non-demented adults with Down Syndrome (48% female, aged 33-54 years). Average total sleep time was associated with lower mean diffusivity in the left super…

The dimensions of white matter injury in preterm neonates.

White matter injury (WMI) represents a frequent form of parenchymal brain injury in preterm neonates. Several dimensions of WMI are recognized, with distinct neuropathologic features involving a combination of destructive and maturational anomalies. Hypoxia-ischemia is the main mechanism leading to WMI and adverse white matter development, which result from injury to the oligodendrocyte precursor cells. Inflammation might act as a potentiator for WMI. A combination of hypoxia-ischemia and inflammation is frequent in several neonatal comorbidities such as postnatal infections, NEC and bronchopu…

Susceptibility to Scams in Older Black and White Adults.

Previous reports on racial differences in scam susceptibility have yielded mixed findings, and few studies have examined reasons for any observed race differences. Older Black and White participants without dementia (N = 592) from the Minority Aging Research Study and the Rush Memory and Aging Project who completed a susceptibility to scam questionnaire and other measures were matched according to age, education, sex, and global cognition using Mahalanobis distance. In adjusted models, older Black adults were less susceptible to scams than older White adults (Beta = -0.2496, SE = 0.0649, p = 0…

A rare case of a pediatric white epidermoid cyst.

White epidermoid cysts are a rare entity that present with atypical signal characteristics on MRI in comparison to typical epidermoid cysts. This can mislead a practitioner when trying to formulate a differential diagnosis based on imaging. We present the case of 15-year-old girl who presented with a pontine-medullar junction mass. This mass did not follow typical signal characteristics for known lesions. The mass was ultimately found to be an epidermoid cyst based on pathology findings. This lesion has rarely been reported in pediatric patients (J Pediatr Neurosci 9(1):52-54, 2014; Singap Med…

White matter development in infants at risk for schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is considered a neurodevelopmental disorder with a pathophysiology that likely begins long before the onset of clinical symptoms. White matter abnormalities have been observed in schizophrenia and we hypothesized that the first 2 years of life is a period in which white matter abnormalities associated with schizophrenia risk may emerge. METHODS: 38 infants at high risk for schizophrenia and 202 healthy controls underwent diffusion tensor MRIs after birth and at 1 and 2 years of age. Quantitative tractography was used to determine diffusion properties (fractional anis…

[A woman with a white skin lesion of her toe].

A 78-year-old woman visited her general practitioner with a sharply bounded white lesion of her toe. We diagnosed it as gouty tophus, which was confirmed by a high serum urate level. Gout is a chronic disease, characterised by deposition of monosodium urate crystals in joints and tissues. The preferable sites of gouty tophi are fingers, toes, knees, elbows, conchae and heels. Treatment of acute gout consists of NSAIDs, steroids or colchicine. Gouty tophi require lifelong urate-lowering treatment.

Anatomy and white matter connections of the orbitofrontal gyrus.

OBJECTIVE The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is understood to have a role in outcome evaluation and risk assessment and is commonly involved with infiltrative tumors. A detailed understanding of the exact location and nature of associated white matter tracts could significantly improve postoperative morbidity related to declining capacity. Through diffusion tensor imaging-based fiber tracking validated by gross anatomical dissection as ground truth, the authors have characterized these connections based on relationships to other well-known structures. METHODS Diffusion imaging from the Human Conne…
