The long-term impact of adverse childhood experiences on episodic memory in mid- to late-life among US older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), including abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction, are associated with depression, substance use. While, prior research suggests ACEs influence memory, few studies have examined this relationship in a nationally representative sample of older US adults. This study explores associations between ACEs before 18 and mid- to late-life episodic memory. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of Health and Retirement Study data to assess ACEs and episodic memory in adults aged 51 and older. ACEs were measured as cumulative exposure to early adve

Relationship between performance validity testing, disability status, and somatic complaints in patients with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain-related disorder that typically includes cognitive complaints as well as non-specific somatic complaints, such as fatigue and sleep disturbance (Wolfe et al., 2010). Fibromyalgia has also been shown to be associated with a high rate of failure on performance validity testing (PVT), which has not been examined with respect to other self-reported symptoms that are now part of the diagnostic criteria for the disorder. We evaluated 85 patients with fibromyalgia who completed objective measures of pain, sleep, and fatigue along with symptom validity measures (Word Mem

[Autoantibodies in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical and serologic study].

Twenty five patients with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis were studied in order to define the frequency and kind of circulating autoantibodies in this entity, as well as, their relationship with the different disease subgroups and complications. Also the association of these autoantibodies with the activity stage of the illness was determined. There were 14 pauciarticular, 8 polyarticular and 3 systemic juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients. Twelve have a flare of the disease and 13 were completely asymptomatic. Rheumatoid factor measured by the latex agglutination tests was positive in 6 child

Meaning for reading: the neurocognitive basis of semantic reading impairment after stroke.

Diagnosis of alexia has historically focused on syndromes such as surface alexia, which capture discrete patterns of reading deficits observed in some patients but do not describe the breadth of reading deficits observed in practice. Aphasia research has recently shifted focus to language process impairments rather than syndromic classifications. A similar shift in focus to reading process impairments might improve our diagnostic approach to alexia. Behavioural evidence suggests that semantic processing influences reading aloud and that semantic deficits in the context of semantic dementia und

Posterior Type of Alzheimer's Dementia Presenting with Homonymous Hemianopsia.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease is a chronic neurodegenerative condition, mostly affecting the medial temporal lobe and associated neocortical structures. In this report, we present a rare clinical manifestation of this disease. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old female with word finding difficulty and memory disturbances was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Two years later, she complained of right homonymous hemianopia without optic ataxia, ocular apraxia, and simultagnosia. No findings other than parenchymal disease were apparent in magnetic resonance imaging and laboratory tests. CONCLUSIONS:

Trauma and autobiographical memory specificity in depressed inpatients.

Research on autobiographical memory has shown that clinical depression is associated with a difficulty in retrieving specific autobiographical memories in response to cue words. This study examined the relation between lack of autobiographical memory specificity and self-reported trauma in a group of depressed adults (N = 23). In addition to the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT; Williams & Broadbent, 1986) participants completed a number of questionnaires assessing the presence of traumatic experiences in the past, level of depression and neuroticism. The number of specific responses was not

Genotype and phenotype relationships for mutations in the ryanodine receptor in patients referred for diagnosis of malignant hyperthermia.

Anaesthesia-induced malignant hyperthermia (MH) may be caused by specific gene defects in the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor. We have studied the frequency of occurrence of the C1840T mutation, analogous to the porcine mutation, and three mutations associated both with MH and central core disease (G7301A, C487T and C1209G). We investigated skeletal muscle specimens from up to 137 patients testing negative and 101 patients testing positive for MH susceptibility by the North American MH Group protocol. The presence or absence of the mutations was determined by polymerase chain reaction and r

Intraoperative Electrocochleography in Subjects Affected by Vestibular Schwannoma and Ménière's Disease: Comparison of Results.

OBJECTIVES: Histologic reports of temporal bones of ears with vestibular schwannomas (VSs) have indicated findings of endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) in some cases. The main goal of this investigation was to test ears with VSs to determine if they exhibit electrophysiological characteristics similar to those of ears expected to experience ELH. DESIGN: Fifty-three subjects with surgically confirmed VS aged ≥18 and with normal middle ear status were included in this study. In addition, a second group of adult subjects (n = 24) undergoing labyrinthectomy (n = 6) or endolymphatic sac decompression an

Lower executive function performance in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging has shown that most brain regions involved in executive functions (EFs) exhibit abnormalities in functional dyspepsia (FD) patients - for example, decreased cortical thickness in these regions. However, EFs in FD patients have remained poorly understood. This study aimed to compare EFs between healthy controls (HCs) and FD patients and investigate the associations of EFs with clinical characteristics in FD patients. Forty-three FD patients meeting the Rome IV criteria and forty-three sex-, age-, and education level-matched HCs were included in the study. T

Enhanced stimulus strength improves visual cognition in aging and Alzheimer's disease.

Deficits in visual cognition in Alzheimer's disease (AD) arise from neuropathological changes in higher-order association areas of the cortex and from defective input from lower-level visual processing areas. We investigated whether enhanced signal strength may lead to improvement of visual cognition in AD. We tested 35 individuals with probable AD, 35 age-matched elderly control (EC) and 58 young control (YC) adults on letter identification, word reading, picture naming, discrimination of unfamiliar faces, and pattern completion. The contrast sensitivity step-difference across an independent

Investigating the cognitive architecture of verbal fluency: evidence from an interference design on 487 controls.

INTRODUCTION: Numerous studies have explored the linguistic and executive processes underlying verbal fluency using association designs, which provide limited evidence. To assess the validity of our model, we aimed to refine the cognitive architecture of verbal fluency using an interference design. METHODS: A total of 487 healthy participants performed letter and semantic fluency tests under the single condition and dual conditions while concurrently performing a secondary task that interferes with speed, semantics, phonology, or flexibility. We examined the effect of such interference on flu

Machine learning-based detection of cognitive decline using SSWTRT: classification performance and decision analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Early detection of cognitive decline is essential for preventing dementia progression, yet conventional screening tools such as the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) require trained examiners and substantial time. Building on evidence that dementia is associated with tactile and visual perceptual deficits, this study examined whether the Sound Symbolic Word Texture Recognition Test (SSWTRT)-a rapid, self-administered task using Japanese sound-symbolic words (SSWs)-could identify individuals with suspected cognitive decline through machine learning analysis. METHODS: A total o
