Do frequent exposures to threats and violence at work affect later workforce participation?

PURPOSE: Threats and violence at work are common problems in the human service sector. It can result in physical and psychological health symptoms. The aim of this study was to examine the association between exposure to threats and violence and workforce participation in four human service sectors. METHODS: 5170 employees answered questionnaires about threats and violence in 2010 and were followed in a register for public transfer incomes for 3.5 years to identify episodes of sick leave, general workforce participation, and permanent health-related benefits. RESULTS: We found associations b

Using multiple data sets for public health tracking of work-related injuries and illnesses in California.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses underestimates the magnitude of workplace injuries and illnesses. Enumerating workplace injuries and illnesses may be improved by utilizing multiple state-based data sources. METHODS: Using California-based datasets (workers' compensation claims, health care facility data, and physician reports), we enumerated unique cases of amputations and carpal tunnel syndrome (2007-2008), and evaluated the datasets for usefulness in occupational health tracking by performing record linkage acro…

Hyperventilation in men claiming compensation for benign asbestos-related diseases.

The observation that hyperventilation was common in men involved in civil court actions compared with my non-medico-legal practice stimulated me to carefully assess 100 consecutively seen men with non-malignant asbestos-related disease(s). A diagnosis of hyperventilation was made in 33 and probable hyperventilation in 12. The development of anxiety symptoms in these men could, in part at least, be prevented or greatly decreased if more emphasis was placed on the education of ex-asbestos workers by solicitors and organisations responsible for the initiation of civil actions.

Carpal tunnel syndrome--can it be a work related condition?

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common hand conditions seen in clinical practice. Many in the workforce, both male and female, will develop carpal tunnel syndrome and many will claim that their workplace has caused their condition. OBJECTIVE: This article seeks to guide the examining practitioner in answering the questions of patients and insurance companies as to whether a patient with the established diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome has an acceptable workers' compensation claim for treatment. DISCUSSION: Carpal tunnel syndrome is mostly constitutional and due to in…

Cost and outcome analyses on the timing of first independent medical evaluation in patients with work-related lumbosacral sprain.

OBJECTIVE: To assess outcomes for different times to the first independent medical evaluation (IME) for work-related lumbosacral sprain. METHODS: The 2005 West Virginia workers' compensation claims for "lumbosacral sprain" were used for our analyses. Outcomes included costs, maximal medical improvement status, number of IMEs performed, and the length of temporary total disability. Multiple logistic regression modeling was applied to determine the significance between the timing of first IME and these outcomes. RESULTS: Patients with a first IME within 101 to 150 days after the injury had the…

Workmens' compensation and byssinosis in South Africa: a review of 32 cases.

Byssinosis has been compensable in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) since 1973. The legal and administrative provisions for byssinosis compensation are reviewed. A series of 32 cases of presumed byssinosis was submitted to the compensation authorities by the authors. Identical reports were submitted to an independent medical panel. The findings and outcomes in these cases are presented and compared. Seventeen of the 32 claims initially received compensation and four were subsequently accepted following appeals. Analysis of the medical basis of decision making indicated that seven claims were

Early results of spinal fusion using variable spine plating system.

Seventy-seven consecutive patients underwent application of variable spine plating (VSP) spinal plates between August 1984 and October 1985. Sixty-four percent had previous procedures at the same level or levels operated. Operative indications were spinal stenosis, segmental instability, unstable spondylolisthesis, herniated disc with instability, pseudoarthrosis, unstable fracture, and failed surgery syndrome with evidence of one of the preceding. Overall results showed 30% excellent, 30% good, 34% fair, 6% poor. There were four deep wound infections and 19 patients with one or more broken sc

Traditional Korean and Western medicine use after industrial accidents: A hurdle model analysis.

BACKGROUND: The number of injured workers using Traditional Korean Medicine (KM) soared from 752 in 2013 to 10,273 in 2023, yet this trend remains underexplored. This cross-sectional study examined the frequency and factors linked to KM and Western Medicine (WM) use among injured workers. METHODS: Data from 6,985 participants in the 2018 and 2023 waves of the Panel Study of Workers' Compensation Insurance (PSWCI) were analyzed. A hurdle model assessed outpatient visits: logistic regression for the probability of use and negative binomial regression for visit intensity. Demographic, socioecono…

Perceptions of risk from workers in high risk industries with work related musculoskeletal disorders.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) remain a major occupational health problem, despite decades of research, outreach, and intervention. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to promote early identification and prevention of WMSDs by developing education and outreach materials grounded in interview data collected from workers that have recently filed for workers compensation (WC) for WMSDs. PROCEDURES: We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with WC claimants (n=66) from high risk industries identified through the use of a Prevention Index (PI) in Washington st

Risk of opioid-related harms by occupation within a large cohort of formerly injured workers in Ontario, Canada: findings from the Occupational Disease Surveillance System.

OBJECTIVE: Working-age individuals have been disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis, prompting interest in the potential role of occupation as a contributor. This study aimed to estimate the risk of opioid-related poisonings and mental and behavioural disorders by occupation and industry within a cohort of 1.7 million formerly injured workers. METHODS: Workers were identified in the Occupational Disease Surveillance System, a system linking workers' compensation data (1983-2019) to emergency department and hospitalisation records (2006-2020) in Ontario, Canada. Cox proportional haza…

Community-Oriented Workers in Local and State Public Health.

CONTEXT: Local and state public health agencies increasingly rely on community-oriented workers to strengthen connections with the populations they serve. This workforce, which includes community health workers, health educators, peer counselors, and health navigators, plays a crucial role in health promotion, disease prevention, and care coordination, especially among underserved populations. Despite their importance, limited national data exist on their size, distribution, and job quality within governmental public health. OBJECTIVE: To describe the size, distribution, and job quality of co

Success in vaccination programming through community health workers: a qualitative analysis of interviews and focus group discussions from Nepal, Senegal and Zambia.

OBJECTIVES: Community health workers are essential to front-line health outreach throughout low-income and middle-income countries, including programming for early childhood immunisation. Understanding how community health workers are engaged for successful early childhood vaccination among countries who showed success in immunisation coverage would support evidence-based policy guidance across contexts. DESIGN: We employed a multiple case study design using qualitative research methods. SETTING: We conducted research in Nepal, Senegal and Zambia. PARTICIPANTS: We conducted 207 interviews a

Carpal tunnel syndrome and computer exposure at work in two large complementary cohorts.

OBJECTIVES: The boom in computer use and concurrent high rates in musculoskeletal complaints and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) among users have led to a controversy about a possible link. Most studies have used cross-sectional designs and shown no association. The present study used longitudinal data from two large complementary cohorts to evaluate a possible relationship between CTS and the performance of computer work. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: The Cosali cohort is a representative sample of a French working population that evaluated CTS using standardised clinical examinations and assessed

Work and Health Questionnaire (WHQ): A Screening Tool for Identifying Injured Workers at Risk for a Complicated Rehabilitation.

Purpose Unintentional injuries occur frequently and many of the accident survivors suffer from temporary or permanent disabilities. Although most accident victims recover quickly, a significant fraction of them shows a complicated recovery process and accounts for the majority of disability costs. Thus, early identification of vulnerable persons may be beneficial for compensation schemes, government bodies, as well as for the worker themselves. Here we present the Work and Health Questionnaire (WHQ), a screening tool that is already implemented in the case management process of the Swiss Accid

Suspected feigned knee extensor weakness: usefulness of 3D gait analysis. Case report.

The purpose of the present case report is to show the potential for use of 3D gait analysis as an assessment method of feigned muscle weakness. We describe a patient complaining of right leg pain and weakness. Physical examination showed severe quadriceps muscle weakness in a highly abnormal gait pattern context. Conventional diagnostic workup did not show any relevant findings. Three-dimensional (3D) gait analysis was performed with a 3D motion capture system. Joint angles, internal moments and powers were computed from the motion data. Lower leg muscle surface-electromyography was also perfo
