ABO blood group is associated with cardiovascular disease, with significantly lower risk in blood group O individuals. ABO(H) blood group determinants are expressed on different glycoproteins on platelet surfaces. In addition, ABO(H) structures are also present on VWF glycans. These ABO(H) carbohydrates influence both platelet and VWF function. Previous studies have reported that approximately 5-10% of normal blood donors express abnormally high or low levels of A or B blood group antigens on their platelet surfaces (high expresser phenotype, HXP or low expresser phenotype, LXP respectively).

I have reviewed hemolytic disease of the newborn to discuss with you the mechanisms by which red cell destruction occurs in the newborn and how such a process may be detected. I have introduced the concept of "minimal hemolytic disease" that manifests in ABO incompatibility disease and have suggested that this process may contribute significantly to the problem of idiopathic hyperbilirubinemia. There are many potential causes for this condition and they deserve study. The diagnosis of hemolytic disease in the newborn includes careful assessment of anemia and of all the factors unique to the ne

A review is presented of jaundiced newborn infants during the 10-year period to 1980. Included are those whose serum bilirubin level was 154 mumol/l or more. Of 41,057 live births, 4,406 (10.7%) infants had hyperbilirubinaemia. The most common (19.9;%) aetiological factor was prematurity, followed by ABO erythroblastosis 7.1%; sepsis 3.4%; Rhesus erythroblastosis 2.7%; bruising 2.2%; multifactorial 1.0% and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency 0.5%. Treatment was not undertaken in 2,855 (64.7%) infants, but 1,419 (32.2%) received phototherapy alone, 122 (2.7%) infants received both exc

INTRODUCTION: The US military has frequently used a 'walking blood bank', formally known as an 'emergency donor panel' (EDP) to obtain warm fresh whole blood (WFWB) which is then immediately transfused into the casualty. We describe the frequency of EDP activation by the US military.
METHODS: We analysed data from 2007 to 2015 within the Department of Defense Trauma Registry for US, Coalition and US contractor casualties that received at least 1 unit of blood product within the first 24 hours and described the frequency of WFWB use.
RESULTS: There were 3474 casualties that met inclusion, of

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of ABO major-incompatible red blood cells (RBCs) can activate the complement system and can cause severe and even lethal acute hemolytic reactions. The activation of the complement system with formation of C3a and C5a (anaphylatoxins) and the release of hemoglobin from the lysed RBCs are thought to mediate clinical signs like fever, hypotension, pain, and acute renal failure. Therapeutic inhibition of the complement cascade in case of ABO-incompatible RBC transfusion would be desirable to ameliorate the signs and symptoms and to improve the outcome of the reaction.

Three groups of Saraswat Brahmans in Western India and a group of Goan Catholics ethnologically related to Saraswats were studied for various genetic markers. Saraswats have higher A than B with an Rh(D)-negative incidence ranging from 10 to 17%. All the groups have low incidence of G-6-PD deficiency (up to 1%). Incidence of thalassaemia trait ranges from 1 to 6%. Gm(1) was present in 85-87%. Intergroup differences suggest genetic closeness between the various groups with genetic distance ranging from 0.8 to 1.5. Genetic relationship between Goan Catholics and Chitrapur Saraswats confirms the

To prevent the occurrence of the ABO incidental incompatibility, the bedside pretransfusion ABO control is mandatory in France since 37 years. If the quality of the reagents is regularly controlled, no technical specification exists concerning the type of support. To describe the different types of devices used by the French hospitals, a brief questionnaire was sent, from December 2000 to March 2001, to each hemovigilance correspondent working in the 1782 hospitals with transfusion activity in 1999. Every participant had to send back the device used in his establishment. The rate of replies wa

Early identification of patients at risk for severe acute pancreatitis (AP) remains a major clinical challenge. Although several clinical scores and inflammatory markers are used for risk stratification, their predictive performance is variable. ABO and Rh blood groups are fixed biological characteristics that have been associated with inflammatory and thrombotic conditions; however, their potential role in predicting the clinical course of acute pancreatitis remains unclear. This retrospective observational study included 512 patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute pancreatitis betwee

BACKGROUND: Hemolytic disease of the newborn, secondary to rhesus D (Rh D) iso-immunization, contributes significantly to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Prevalence data in Nigeria, and Southeast Nigeria in particular, is very scanty. This study was carried out to provide our experience in this preventable clinical condition in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence and trends of Rh D negativity among pregnant women in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 5-year retrospective study of rhesus negative women was carried out at the University of Nigeri

Patients with primary biliary cirrhosis have an abnormally high incidence of urinary tract infection (35%). Susceptibility to urinary infection and other infectious diseases has been linked with certain blood group antigens and secretor status. We have therefore studied these characteristics in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. We were unable to show any abnormal distribution in blood groups or secretor status in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (compared with a normal population) which might reflect their predisposition to urinary infection. The distribution of blood groups and

Statistical analysis was used to examine certain environmental and biological aspects of thyrotoxicosis, specifically: marital status, occupation, sex, age of onset of menarche and menopause, number of pregnancies and miscarriages, blood groups (ABO, Rh system). The results showed a significant prevalence of non-married working women among patients suffering from thyrotoxicosis. They also showed that the patients under examination reach menarche at an earlier age and the menopause at a later age than a control group, and the figures were statistically significant.

The distribution of the Rhesus and ABO blood groups, thalassemia, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Europe and in Jewish populations argues for a regulatory mechanism at the population level which adjusts gene frequencies so that the overall genetic load is not excessive, since gene frequencies giving a high genetic load at one locus are often associated with those giving low genetic loads at other loci.

BACKGROUND: Transplant patients may have circulating non-ABO red blood cell (RBC) antibodies, but the influence of RBC alloimmunization on solid-organ transplantation outside of the ABO blood group system is not well known. Though RBC antigens have been identified in or on cells other than RBCs, the incidence of non-ABO RBC antibodies in transplant patients has had limited investigation. Identification of non-ABO RBC antibodies in transplant patients may help clarify cases of suspected antibody-mediated rejection (AMR) when human leukocyte antigen (HLA) donor-specific antibodies (DSA) cannot b

OBJECTIVES: Timely availability of a suitable allograft helps offset pediatric liver transplant (pLT) waitlist mortality. Candidate-donor blood type matching (CDBM) is an important attribute for allograft allocation. Current policy allows for blood type (ABO) compatible non-identical transplants for pLT candidates with high acuity. Additionally, centers may use ABO incompatible allografts for pLT candidates when required.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database. We analyzed pediatric (<18 years) candidates listed for deceased dono

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: High-quality ABO antibody titre testing is required for ABO-incompatible haematopoietic stem cell transplantation and kidney transplantation. To assess the feasibility of automated ABO titration as an alternative to manual and semi-automatic titration during the peri-transplant period, a comparative study was conducted internally in a transfusion medicine laboratory.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed in two stages. Firstly, the differences in anti-A/B detecting using conventional tube test (CTT) and manual column agglutination technology (CAT) were com

In past and ongoing military conflicts, the use of whole blood (WB) as a resuscitative product to treat trauma-induced shock and coagulopathy has been widely accepted as an alternative when availability of a balanced component-based transfusion strategy is restricted or lacking. In previous military conflicts, ABO group O blood from donors with low titers of anti-A/B blood group antibodies was favored. Now, several policies demand the exclusive use of ABO group-specific WB. In this short review, we argue that the overall risks, dangers, and consequences of "the ABO group-specific approach," in
