Therapy with specialised biomaterials, exogenous surfactants, is known to significantly decrease the mortality rates in Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). Surfactants available commercially vary widely in composition and biophysical properties. The present paper studies the ultrastructure of three exogenous surfactants used for the treatment of Respiratory Distress Syndrome, namely, Survanta, ALEC and Exosurf Neonatal with respect to their ability to form liposomes using cryogenic scanning electron microscopy. Liposomal organisation is more obvious in Exosurf than in Survanta and is most pro

Hunger or malnutrition is not only a historical issue but also a current problem worldwide. Biological responses to hunger are evolutionary prepared in our body, including energy generation by degradation of body proteins. Extreme weight loss (malnutrition) can cause air space enlargement in human and rodents. However, the changes in rodents could be reversible, since refeeding could repair the pathology. On the other hand, weight loss is a common feature in patients with more severe COPD. Complex factors, such as increased energy consumption, decreased food uptake by low grade inflammation, s

Microbubble US contrast agents are composed of an outer shell of protein, phospholipid or polymer that encase air or perfluorocarbon gas. These contrast agents have been widely used in adult cardiology patients to improve endocardial border delineation and have been proved safe and well tolerated in this patient population. There is also a growing body of literature elucidating the value of contrast-enhanced sonography to distinguish benign from malignant liver lesions in adults and to characterize non-hepatic adult malignancies. Because these agents have not been approved for pediatric use in

We study the spatially correlated motions of colloidal particles in a quasi-2D system (human serum albumin protein molecules at an air-water interface) for different surface viscosities eta s. We observe a transition in the behavior of the correlated motion, from 2D interface dominated at high eta s to bulk fluid dependent at low eta s. The correlated motions can be scaled onto a master curve which captures the features of this transition. This master curve also characterizes the spatial dependence of the flow field of a viscous interface in response to a force. The scale factors used for the

A case of bronchial plasmacytoma occurring in a 57-year-old housewife is reported. She had had the productive cough and the "abnormal shadow" in the right lower lobe for three years before admission. On bronchoscopy, a tumor was found in the right main bronchus, large enough to obstruct the air way. The tumor was resected through rigid bronchoscope. Histological impression was "plasmacytoma with local amyloid deposit." M-protein was never detected in the serum or urine. Applying the immunoperoxidase technique for the paraffin section, the plasma cells were found to contain only a single type o

Introduction: Acrolein is a significant component of anthropogenic and wildfire emissions, as well as cigarette smoke. Although acrolein primarily deposits in the upper respiratory tract upon inhalation, patterns of site-specific injury in nasal versus pulmonary tissues are not well characterized. This assessment is critical in the design of in vitro and in vivo studies performed for assessing health risk of irritant air pollutants. Methods: In this study, male and female Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed nose-only to air or acrolein. Rats in the acrolein exposure group were exposed to incrementa

Kretek smoke contains various toxic substances that are harmful to human health and has been associated with inflammation and structural alterations in multiple organs. However, its effects on cardiac tissue remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate myocardial histopathological alterations and p53 protein expression following subchronic kretek smoke exposure in rats. Male Rattus norvegicus Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into two groups. Group I was exposed to normal air, while Group II was exposed to kretek smoke at a dose of 1 kretek/rat/day for 30 days. Cardiac

Membrane protein (MP)-based biomaterials have a wide range of applications in drug screening, antigen detection, and ligand-receptor interaction analysis. Traditional MP immobilization methods have the disadvantage of disordered protein immobilization orientation, leading to the shielded binding domain and unreliable binding pattern. Herein, we describe a site-specific covalent immobilization of MPs, which utilizes the styrene maleic acid (SMA) detergent-free extraction method of MPs as well as the covalent reaction between His-tag and divinyl sulfone (DVS). As an example, we covalently immobi

Survivin, an inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, appears to be involved in tumor progression and angiogenesis. The current study contains rare reports on the transcriptional regulation of survivin expression in retinal neovascularization (NV). The aim of this study was to investigate hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and survivin expression in pathologic ocular angiogenesis and to determine their correlation and cellular location. The model of oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) was induced in C57BL/6 mice by exposing 75% oxygen from postnatal day 7 (p7) to p12 and then followed by room air

Biological membranes are complex, self-organized structures that define boundaries and compartmentalize space in living matter. Composed of a wide variety of lipid and protein molecules, these responsive surfaces mediate transmembrane signaling and material transport within the cell and with its environment. It is well known that lipid membrane properties change as a function of composition and phase state, and that protein-lipid interactions can induce changes in the membrane's properties and biochemical response. Here, molecular level changes in lipid organization induced by multivalent toxi

Four-month-old female Wistar rats were exposed for 20 days to tobacco smoke obtained from non-filter cigarettes. During the exposure, concentration of tobacco smoke was monitored indirectly by measuring the CO level (1500 mg/m3 air). The efficacy of exposure was assessed by measuring urine nicotine and cotinine levels. Cigarette smoke did not change total cytochrome P450 and b5 protein levels in any of the organs studied, and most of these organs did not show any changes in the activity of reductases associated with these cytochromes. Following exposure to tobacco smoke, fetal rat liver expres

Extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO) and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosisis are significant problems in Asian countries. Both EHPVO and bilateral TMJ ankylosis may have rare association due to protein C and S deficiency which may cause hypercoagulability as well as reduced fibrinolytic activity. Ankylosis arising in early childhood is associated with facial asymmetry, feeding difficulty and speech development alterations. It is also associated with great challenges of endoscopic management in extra hepatic portal vein obstruction (EHPVO) with variceal bleed as well as air way

Bacteria trigger host defense and inflammatory processes, such as cytokine production, pyroptosis, and the chemotactic migration of immune cells toward the source of infection. However, a number of pathogens interfere with these immune functions by producing specific so-called "effector" proteins, which are delivered to host cells via dedicated secretion systems. Air-borne Legionella pneumophila bacteria trigger an acute and potential fatal inflammation in the lung termed Legionnaires' disease. The opportunistic pathogen L. pneumophila is a natural parasite of free-living amoebae, but also rep

Carbohydrates present on the surface of living cells mediate key biological processes, including viral infection, cell adhesion, and immune response. Mimicking the structural complexity of these naturally occurring sugars is therefore critical for gaining fundamental insights into protein-carbohydrate recognition and for guiding the design of glycomimetic architectures with therapeutic relevance. Covalently linking carbohydrates to molecular inorganic architectures provides a unique strategy for interrogating protein recognition that leverages the structural organization and precision of coord

Culture medium formulation influences mushroom yield and composition, but its effect on the properties of edible fungal protein remains unclear. To explore the functional and nutritional properties of proteins from Grifola frondosa (GF) fruiting bodies, the study examined the structural, interfacial, gelling, and digestive properties of GF proteins grown in four culture media. The four GF proteins obtained were labeled GFP1-GFP4, respectively. The β-turn content and intrinsic fluorescence in GFP1 increased by 41.48% and 36.45% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to GFP4. GFP4 exhibited higher s

The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a chloride channel residing primarily at the apical membrane of epithelial cells, plays a major role in fluid secretion and the maintenance of epithelial surface hydration. Mutations in the CFTR gene lead to the fatal disease known as cystic fibrosis (CF). Drugs that improve mutant CFTR protein folding and channel function have dramatically improved CF patient outcomes. However, the current regimen only restores the function of the most common mutant, ΔF508, to ~62% of wildtype (WT). Notably, ~10% of patients harboring hundreds of

BACKGROUND: Recurrent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection requiring hospitalization is rare and the underlying mechanism is unknown. We aimed to determine the role of CD14-mediated immunity in the pathogenesis of recurrent RSV infection.
METHODS: We performed genotyping and longitudinal immunophenotyping of the first patient with a genetic CD14 deficiency who developed recurrent RSV infection. We analyzed gene expression profiles and interleukin (IL)-6 production by patient peripheral blood mononuclear cells in response to RSV pre- and post-fusion (F) protein. We generated CD14-defici

The widespread use of electronic cigarettes (e-cig) is a serious public health concern; however, mechanisms by which e-cig impair the function of airway epithelial cells-the direct target of e-cig smoke-are not fully understood. Here we report transcriptomic changes, including decreased expression of many ribosomal genes, in airway epithelial cells in response to e-cig exposure. Using RNA-seq we identify over 200 differentially expressed genes in air-liquid interface cultured primary normal human bronchial epithelial (NHBE) exposed to e-cig smoke solution from commercial e-cig cartridges.
