A Perennial Threat: A Case Series of Tree-Related Neurotrauma.

Background Despite their devastating nature, injuries due to tree-related- traumas are sparsely reported in the literature. Over the last several years, the incidence of tree-related traumatic injuries presenting to our level one trauma center, in Westchester, New York, has been concerning. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the clinical presentation, injury pattern, and outcomes of tree-related neurotrauma at our institution. In addition, we describe the injury pattern and medical management of several relevant cases of tree-related neurotrauma. Methods We conducted a retrospective

A profile of deaths in children at the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Services mortuary in Gauteng, South Africa from 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020.

This retrospective study was conducted to address the scarcity of knowledge regarding unnatural child deaths in South Africa. This was done by analysing cases admitted to the Diepkloof Forensic Pathology Services mortuary between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2020. Data from FPS death registers and FPS case files were used to profile: (1) the incidence, causes and manner of death, circumstances of death, and ancillary investigations performed at autopsy; and (2) to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on trauma-related child deaths. Of 4 704 decedents, 535 (11.4%) were children, predomi

Investigation of the force associated with the formation of lacerations and skull fractures.

Post-mortem examination is often relied upon in order to determine whether a suspicious death was natural, accidental, suicidal or homicidal. However, in many cases the mechanism by which a single injury has been inflicted cannot be determined with certainty based on pathological examination alone. Furthermore the current method of assessing applied force relating to injury is restricted to an arbitrary and subjective scale (mild, moderate, considerable, or severe). This study investigates the pathophysiological nature of head injuries caused by blunt force trauma, specifically in relation to

'Munchausen syndrome by proxy' presenting as battered child syndrome: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Child abuse is a major public health crisis and is on the rise. Dermatologists are frequently involved in its evaluation in differentiating abusive injuries from accidental injuries and in excluding pathological conditions that may mimic abuse. Battered child syndrome or physical abuse is not only a common form of child abuse but can also result from a rarer form of child abuse known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy. In this form of abuse, mother, who is the usual perpetrator, induces an illness or abuses the child for her own self-serving psychological needs. METHODS: We report tw…

Accidental Strangulation While Playing with Hammock in a Child.

In children, strangulation is a fatal injury due to asphyxia, a terminal event of partial or complete hanging. Homemade hammocks are routinely used as a cradle which is potentially dangerous. We are hereby reporting a 12-year-old female with accidental strangulation occurring as a result of swinging on a hammock made of saree and also in a view to educate the public about the hazards of using homemade hammocks.

Acute hepatitis C during pregnancy. Case report and review of the literature.

Treatment of chronic hepatitis C with interferon is well established (Fried 1995, Zein 1995) though not very successful. We report a case of a pregnant doctor who developed acute hepatitis C six weeks after accidental needle-stick injury from a hepatitis C virus positive patient. We review the literature that deals with such cases.

Clinical significance of the diverse interlobar veins hidden in the upper oblique fissure.

BACKGROUND: The interlobar veins hidden in the upper oblique fissure (UOF) of the right lung are usually mismanaged cursorily according to the target lobe, which results in accidental injury of the interlobar veins and complications. The detailed classification of interlobar veins based on surgical anatomical analysis is of great clinical significance. METHODS: Three-dimensional computed tomography bronchography and angiography (3D-CTBA) reconstructed images of 398 patients from January 2019 to June 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The interlobar veins in the UOF were observed and classifi

The Role of Anatomical Imaging and Intraoperative Neuromonitoring (IONM) for Successful Prediction of a Nonrecurrent Laryngeal Nerve.

A nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) is a rare anatomical variant of laryngeal nerves that branches directly from the vagus nerve. The anatomical abnormality makes it difficult to identify the NRLN and results in high incidence of accidental nerve injury during surgery. A 76-year-old woman complained of swelling in the right side of her neck and visited our university hospital for further examination. Ultrasonography showed a right thyroid lobe mass with calcification and fine needle aspiration biopsy was classified as class III. Computed tomography revealed that the right subclavian artery b

Injuries of the heart and great vessels due to pins and needles.

Three instances of cardiac injury from needles in two adults are described. Trauma was accidental in one and due to suicidal attempts in the other two. The objects were removed. There are 157 published accounts of wounding of the heart and/or great vessels by pins and needles. The victims have ranged from infants to the elderly. Causative agencies were accidents, suicide, and homicide. A few were discovered at necropsy in presumably asymptomatic persons. Six of the accidental injuries were iatrogenic. The objects reached the heart or great vessels from transthoracic insertion, ingestion, embol…

Epidemiological and clinical characteristics of pediatric corrosive ingestion and factors associated with acute esophageal injury: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of accidental corrosive agent ingestion in children and to identify factors associated with the severity of acute corrosive esophageal injury. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed demographic and clinical data of 138 children who accidentally ingested corrosive agents in a single center from July 2014 to October 2024. The severity of esophageal injury was assessed using the Zargar grading system (Grade 0-IV) during initial endoscopy. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression were used to i

Long-term outcomes in children with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury: a single-centre retrospective study.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant cause of mortality and disability in the pediatric population. Non-accidental trauma (NAT) has specifically been reported to result in more severe injury as compared to accidental mechanisms of injury. We aim to investigate the long-term neurological outcomes in children with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury. Our secondary aim is to evaluate the difference in outcomes between children presenting with NAT and non-NAT, in our study population. We performed a retrospective study in a tertiary pediatric hospital between January 2008 to October

High-Pressure Water Injection Injury to the Hand: An Underestimated Mechanism of Compartment Syndrome.

High-pressure injection injuries, although rare, pose a significant risk of severe soft tissue damage and compartment syndrome, especially when involving the hand and fingers. We present the case of a 25-year-old male patient who accidentally sustained a high-pressure water jet injury while using a power washer, leading to digital compartment syndrome of the thumb and index finger. Prompt recognition, early surgical decompression, and multidisciplinary care led to a favorable outcome. This case highlights the deceptive appearance of such injuries and underscores the need for urgent surgical in

Prophylactic ureteral stent in colorectal surgery: a meta-analysis and systematic review.

PURPOSE: Accidental ureteric injury during colorectal surgery is a rare but dreadful event. It is associated with a higher risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) and acute kidney injury (AKI). Prophylactic placement of double J stents could improve ureteral identification and decrease the chance of accidental ureteral injury. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Cochrane, Central Register of Clinical Trials, and Web of Science for studies published until March 2024. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were pooled with a random-effects model. Statistical significance was defined as p

[Intraoperative identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerves in thyroid surgery].

Accidental injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a common complication of thyroid surgery. Different mechanisms of injury have been described, such as mechanical, electrical, or thermal. Retrosternal operations, secondary bleeding requiring wound revision, or neoplastic tumors are also frequent causes of this complication. Intraoperative direct stimulation of suspected nerve structures as well as vagal nerve stimulation have been proposed to avoid the injury. The effect of stimulation can be assessed by direct observation of the vocal cords (direct laryngoscopy or fiberoscopy via a laryng

White Phosphorus Burns: A Comprehensive Review over a Century of Evidence from "Willie Peter" to Modern Clinical Management.

White phosphorus (WP) is a highly reactive incendiary agent capable of causing severe injuries through combined thermal combustion and chemical tissue damage, with potential systemic toxicity disproportionate to burn size. Although traditionally associated with warfare, accidental civilian exposures continue to occur, including in coastal environments where historical military residues may persist. This narrative review synthesizes over a century of evidence on WP burns, integrating findings from experimental studies, clinical reports, military experiences, environmental investigations, and to

Biomechanics of Spiral Fractures: Investigating Periosteal Effects Using Digital Image Correlation.

UNLABELLED: Spiral fractures are a frequent clinical manifestation of child abuse, particularly in non-ambulatory infants. Approximately 50% of fractures in children under one year of age are non-accidental, yet differentiating between accidental and abusive injuries remains challenging, as no single fracture type is diagnostic in isolation. The objective of this study is to investigate the biomechanics of spiral fractures in immature long bones and the role of the periosteum in modulating fracture behavior under torsional loading. METHODS: Paired metatarsal bone specimens from immature sheep

Developing CT based computational models of pediatric femurs.

The mechanisms of fracture in infants and toddlers are not well understood. There have been very few studies on the mechanical properties of pediatric bones and their responses under fracture loading. A better understanding of fracture mechanisms in children will help elucidate both accidental and non-accidental injuries, as well as bone fragility diseases. The aim of this study is to develop in silico femoral models from CT scans to provide detailed quantitative information regarding the geometry and mechanical response of the femur, with the long term potential of investigating injury mechan…

A prospective study of coroner's autopsies in University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria.

The present study reviews 876 consecutive coroner's autopsies performed in the Department of Pathology, University College Hospital, Ibadan over a two-year period (1 February 1991 to 31 January 1993). The hospital autopsy rate during the study period was 36.2%, and 62.5 per cent of these post-mortems were medico-legal cases. The most common indications for coroner's autopsies were sudden natural deaths (55.6%), followed by accidental deaths (35.3%). The proportions of maternal (4.3%), homicidal (3.1%) and suicidal (0.3%) deaths were much lower. The male to female ratio was 1.7 to 1. Ninety-one
