Protective Effects of Gallic Acid Against Lead Acetate- Induced Toxicity in Mice Ovary: Focus on Apoptosis, Inflammation, and Folliculogenesis.

Lead is an environmental pollutant recognized for its toxicity to the reproductive system. This study investigated the effects of gallic acid (GA), a polyphenolic compound found in plants, on the ovaries of mice exposed to lead (Pb) in the form of lead acetate. Forty Balb/c mice were divided into five groups: control (no treatment), sham (normal saline), GA (75 mg/kg), Pb (30 mg/kg), and GA (75 mg/kg) + Pb (30 mg/kg). Daily treatments were administered for 35 days via oral gavage, after which the ovaries were examined. The mRNA expression of antioxidant, inflammatory, and apoptotic genes as we

Liquid chromatographic analysis of phosphoamino acids at femtomole level using chemical derivatization with N-hydroxysuccinimidyl fluorescein-O-acetate.

Phosphorylation of amino acid residues in proteins plays a major role in biological systems. In this paper, a reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method based on chemical derivatization has been described for the separation and quantification of phosphoamino acids at femtomole level, using fluorimetric detection (FLD). The protocol involved pre-column derivatization of phosphoamino acids with N-hydroxysuccinimidyl fluorescein-O-acetate (SIFA) and subsequent separation on ZORBAX Eclipse XDB-C8 column. Several experimental factors that influenced derivatization and sepa

Sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ uptake is not decreased in aorta from deoxycorticosterone acetate hypertensive rats: functional assessment with cyclopiazonic acid.

Ca2+ plays a major role in vascular contraction, and a defect in intracellular Ca2+ regulation has been associated with increased vascular reactivity in hypertension. To test the hypothesis that the sarcoplasmic reticulum does not adequately buffer Ca2+ in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) hypertension, contractile experiments were performed with a specific inhibitor of the sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase, cyclopiazonic acid (CPA). Contractile force in aortic strips from DOCA and control rats was measured, using standard muscle bath procedures, to evaluate (i) Ca2+ handling, assessing caff

A non-conventional biodiesel process route from waste palm fatty acid distillate and ethyl acetate via esterification.

The high cost and food competition associated with conventional biodiesel feedstocks limit its widespread adoption. This research investigates using palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD), a low-cost industrial by-product which is high in free fatty acids (FFAs), as a sustainable feedstock. A novel glycerol-free esterification route was developed employing ethyl acetate as acyl acceptor and sulfuric acid as catalyst, producing fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) and valuable acetic acid as by-product. The characterization of PFAD confirmed its high FFA content of 91.78 ± 0.62%, then the Taguchi method …

Comparative Efficacy of Hypochlorous Acid and Mafenide Acetate in Reducing Infection Rates in Postoperative Burn Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Infection is a leading cause of mortality in patients with third-degree burns, contributing to over 75% of burn-related deaths. Despite the widespread use of hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and mafenide acetate (MA) as wet dressings in burn care, direct comparisons of their effectiveness are limited. Thus, this study evaluates the relative efficacy of HOCl and MA in managing infections and improving survival outcomes in postoperative burn patients. This retrospective study included adults with second and third-degree burns who underwent excision and grafting between January 2012 and February 2024 at

Dysregulated hippocampal fatty acid metabolism following intermittent hypoxemia-induced neonatal brain injury is rescued by treatment with acetate.

The brain is a lipid-rich organ that experiences rapid growth and development after birth in a period hallmarked by extensive lipid synthesis. We still lack a fundamental understanding of lipid metabolism during this critical time of brain development and how these dynamics occur in infants born extremely preterm (<28 weeks of gestation) suffering from brain injuries. Using an established model of neonatal brain injury due to intermittent hypoxemia, we recapitulate hippocampal-dependent cognitive impairments and examine the extent of changes in the brain's lipid profile. Our results show chang

An ambient complexation reaction of zinc acetate and ascorbic acid leads to a new form of nanoscale particles with emergent optical properties.

We report the formation of nanoscale particles from the complexation reaction between zinc acetate and ascorbic acid under ambient conditions and in an aqueous medium. The reaction led to the formation of a molecular complex with the formula Zn x (AA) y (OAc) z (x, y, and z = possible smallest positive integer) with AA meaning ascorbate, based on the mass spectrometry results. Following this, the formation of luminescent nanoscale particles - the size of which increased with time - was observed. During 24 h of observation, the sizes increased to about 50 nm in the presence of different sizes a

Acetate protects against intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury independent of its cognate free fatty acid 2 receptor.

Free fatty acid 2 receptor (FFA2) is highly expressed on neutrophils and, when activated by its cognate ligand acetate, generates potent anti-inflammatory activities. The roles of FFA2 and acetate have not been explored in ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). We therefore examined the function of FFA2 and the therapeutic potential of acetate to reduce tissue injury in an acute model of intestinal IRI. The superior mesenteric artery of wild-type (WT) and FFA2-/- mice was briefly occluded then reperfused following treatment with acetate or vehicle. The absence of FFA2 resulted in intestinal injury

Medium-Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) Production Through Anaerobic Fermentation Using Clostridium kluyveri: Effect of Ethanol and Acetate.

Medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) are saturated monocarboxylic acids and can be used as antimicrobials, corrosion inhibitors, precursors in biodiesel, and bioplastic production. In the present study, MCFA production was evaluated with acetate and ethanol using the bacteria Clostridium kluyveri. Effects of substrate, electron donor, and methane inhibitor on MCFA production were evaluated. Bacteria successfully converted the ethanol and acetate to butyrate (C4), caproate (C6), and caprylate (C8) by chain elongation process. The highest concentrations of butyrate (4.6 g/l), caproate (3.2 g/l), and

Removal of aqueous Hg(II) and Cr(VI) using phytic acid doped polyaniline/cellulose acetate composite membrane.

Conductive composite membrane-phytic acid (PA) doped polyaniline (PANI)/cellulose acetate (CA) (PANI-PA/CA) was prepared in a simple and environmental-friendly method, in which aniline was blended with CA/PA solution and polymerized before the phase conversion. The resultant composite membranes were characterized by SEM, EDX, FTIR-ATR, BET and electrical resistance measurements. When used as adsorbent for Hg(II) and Cr(VI) ions, the prepared composite membrane exhibits excellent adsorption capability. The adsorption of Hg(II) and Cr(VI) follows a pseudo-second-order kinetic model and best fits

Uric acid does not affect the acetylcholine-induced relaxation of aorta from normotensive and deoxycorticosterone acetate-salt hypertensive rats.

Uric acid (UA) results from xanthine oxidase (XO) catabolism of xanthine and is the final product of purine catabolism in humans. In this species, hyperuricemia is associated with gout, nephropathy, and increased cardiovascular disease risk. Although the effects of hyperuricemia in vascular biology are overall controversial, UA has been described as an antioxidant and as potentially improving endothelial function. Hypertension is associated with endothelial dysfunction. We hypothesized that UA improves the endothelial function of aorta from deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt hypertensive

Plant-Derived Molecules α-Boswellic Acid Acetate, Praeruptorin-A, and Salvianolic Acid-B Have Age-Related Differential Effects in Young and Senescent Human Fibroblasts In Vitro.

Testing and screening of plant-derived molecules on normal human cells in vitro is a widely used approach for discovering their eventual health beneficial effects for human ageing and longevity. As little is known about age-associated differential effects of such molecules, here we report that young (<25% replicative lifespan completed) and near-senescent (>90% replicative lifespan completed) human skin fibroblasts exposed for 1-15 days to a wide range of concentrations (0.1-100 μM) of the three selected phytochemicals, namely α-boswellic acid acetate (ABC), praeruptorin-A (PTA), and salvianol

Protective effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and 5-methoxyindole-3-acetic acid against diquat-induced acute liver injury involve activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Diquat (DQ), a widely used bipyridyl herbicide, induces acute liver injury primarily through oxidative stress, and effective targeted therapies remain lacking. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) exhibits antioxidant potential, but its role in DQ-induced liver injury has not been fully clarified. This study investigated the protective effects of LGG and its associated metabolite 5-methoxyindole-3-acetic acid (5-MIAA) and explored the underlying mechanisms. METHODS: A DQ-induced acute liver injury model was established in C57BL/6 mice with LGG pretreatment and Nrf2 inhibitor (ML385) i…

Synergistic Effect of Indole-3-Acetic Acid and Homogeneously Dispersed Ulva prolifera-Derived Carbon Quantum Dots in Enhancing CO2 Fixation, Biomass Production, and Macromolecules in Chlorella vulgaris.

To address light attenuation caused by self-shading in dense microalgal cultures within photobioreactors, this study proposes a synergistic strategy employing Ulva prolifera-derived carbon quantum dots (U-CQDs) combined with indole-3-acetic acid (IAA). Hydrothermally synthesized U‑CQDs exhibiting fluorescence emission at 580 nm were homogeneously suspended in the culture, converting UV‑blue light into orange‑red wavelengths readily absorbed by microalgae, thereby improving light distribution uniformity. The combination of 1 mg·L-1 U-CQDs and 5 mg·L-1 IAA increased biomass production to 2.17 g·…

N-Acetylcysteine, Tiron, and Their Combination: In Vitro Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Activities and Their Protective Effect in a Rat Model of Acetic Acid-Induced Ulcerative Colitis.

Ulcerative colitis is characterized by inflammation, oxidative stress, and excessive free radical production. This study investigated the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and protective effects of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), Tiron, and their fixed-ratio combination in acetic acid-induced colitis. An integrated approach was used, combining ligand-ligand docking, acellular antioxidant and protein-denaturation assays, and an in vivo model in male Wistar rats. Colitis was induced by intrarectal administration of 3% acetic acid after 14 days of intraperitoneal pretreatment with NAC, Tiron, or NAC-Tiron.…
