Systemic adaptation to oxidative challenge induced by regular exercise.

Exercise is associated with increased ATP need and an enhanced aerobic and/or anaerobic metabolism, which results in an increased formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Regular exercise seems to decrease the incidence of a wide range of ROS-associated diseases, including heart disease, type II diabetes, rheumatic arthritis, Alzheimer and Parkinson diseases, and certain cancers. The preventive effect of regular exercise, at least in part, is due to oxidative stress-induced adaptation. The oxidative challenge-related adaptive process of exercise is probably not just dependent upon the gener

Species-specific genitalic copulatory courtship in sepsid flies (Diptera, Sepsidae, Microsepsis) and theories of genitalic evolution.

Males of Microsepsis eberhardi and M. armillata use their genitalic surstyli to rhythmically squeeze the female's abdomen with stereotyped movements during copulation. Squeezing movements did not begin until intromission had occurred and, contrary to predictions of the conflict-of-interest hypothesis for genitalic evolution, did not overcome morphological or behavioral female resistance. Contrary to predictions of the lock-and-key hypothesis, female morphology was uniform in the two species and could not mechanically exclude the genitalia of either species of male. The complex pattern of squee

Field research on the relationship between stress and disease activity in rheumatoid arthritis.

We review empirical evidence from two field studies for the role of stressful life events in disease flare-ups among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). RA patients were expected to be more vulnerable psychologically, and physiologically, to stressful events in their everyday lives than other arthritis patients without an autoimmune disease. Findings from two studies are reviewed both for their substantive contribution, but also to provide guidance on measurement issues in future field research of this kind. One study included 41 patients with RA, who were interviewed weekly and called to

Enamel thickness and the helicoidal occlusal plane.

In the present study 38 unworn maxillary molars (M1 = 16, M2 = 12, M3 = 10) of modern humans from a Slavic necropolis were sectioned through the mesial cusps in a plane perpendicular to the cervical margin of the crown. Five slightly worn M1s and one slightly worn M3 were also used thus increasing the total sample to 44, but measurements made on the worn areas were coded as missing values. Seven measurements of enamel thickness as well as the heights of the protocone and the paracone dentine horns were recorded in order to analyze whether changes in these dimensions in anteroposterior directio

Adaptations to chloride-depletion alkalosis.

The systemic and renal adaptations for the maintenance and correction of metabolic alkalosis generated by chloride depletion (CDA) are the focus of this review. The hypothesis that extracellular fluid (ECF) volume expansion is essential for the correction of CDA is refuted, while the concept that Cl- repletion is necessary and sufficient for correction is developed. Contraction of ECF volume probably can occur as a consequence of CDA. The principal mechanisms by which the kidney corrects CDA appear to reside primarily in the collecting duct, which is endowed with the anion exchange mechanisms

Models of the normal and abnormal rod system.

A framework is presented for using threshold data to test hypotheses about the action of a disease, a chemical agent, or a developmental process. A model of the normal rod system, based on models from the physiological and psychophysical literature, is presented. Hypotheses about the alteration of the rod system are specified in this model. The approach is illustrated with a class of hypotheses that places the decrease in sensitivity with retinal disease at the rod receptors and with data from patients with retinitis pigmentosa and congenital stationary night blindness. The implications for mo

Mechanobiological Design of Bioinspired Polymeric Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration.

Bone regeneration presents a significant clinical challenge due to the complex interplay between biological processes and the local mechanical environment. While polymeric scaffolds are widely utilized for their tunable physicochemical properties, traditional designs often fail to replicate the dynamic mechanical cues required for optimal tissue remodeling. This review critically examines the mechanobiological design of bioinspired polymeric scaffolds. We first categorize native bone mechanics and the role of mechanical stimuli-such as stiffness, fluid shear, and stability-in regulating the fr

Redefining cardiometabolic biomarkers in the big data era: toward a personalized medicine-centered reconstruction of risk prediction models.

Conventional cardiometabolic risk prediction models rely primarily on population-derived averages and static biomarker thresholds, which inadequately capture individual biological heterogeneity and the dynamic nature of disease progression. Recent advances in multi-omics technologies, wearable sensing, and electronic health records have created new opportunities to move beyond static risk assessment toward individualized and longitudinal disease characterization. In this perspective article, we argue that cardiometabolic biomarkers should be redefined from isolated diagnostic indicators into d

Roles of Mutation, Ploidy, and Recombination in Adaptive Evolution in Two Divergent Model Yeasts.

Genetic variation underlies the capacity of populations to adapt, yet what drives how this variation is generated and maintained in natural populations remains poorly understood. Fundamental processes such as mutation, ploidy, and recombination are known to shape genetic variation and adaptive potential but are typically studied in isolation and under controlled laboratory conditions. How these processes act together under varying environmental conditions to structure genetic variation across complex natural populations remains unresolved. In yeasts, these processes are dependent on reproducti

A mechanistic modeling framework to interpret ACTH stimulation tests across HPA axis adaptation states and glucocorticoid feedback dynamics.

The hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis is a key regulatory system coordinating endocrine responses to physiological and psychological stress. While the ACTH stimulation test remains a cornerstone of adrenal function assessment, its interpretation is complicated by the dynamic and adaptive nature of the HPA axis under chronic stress exposure. In particular, prolonged stress induces glandular remodeling, glucocorticoid receptor (GR) resistance and delayed feedback recovery, all of which may alter test outcomes without indicating primary adrenal failure. In this study, we present a mechani

Marked inter-strain heterogeneity in the differential expression of some key stress response and virulence-related genes between planktonic and biofilm cells in Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes is a facultatively intracellular pathogenic bacterium that can provoke invasive listeriosis, a severe foodborne infection in humans. Outside the host, this is capable to survive for long periods in soil, and water, as well as on plants, while, like many other microorganisms, this can also attach to abiotic surfaces, such as food contact ones, forming biofilms on them. It has been suggested that inside those sessile communities, L. monocytogenes cells not only display an increased stress tolerance but may also boost their pathogenicity. In this work, the expression of ten

The homeoviscous adaptation to dietary lipids (HADL) model explains controversies over saturated fat, cholesterol, and cardiovascular disease risk.

SFAs play the leading role in 1 of the greatest controversies in nutrition science. Relative to PUFAs, SFAs generally increase circulating concentrations of LDL cholesterol, a risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). However, the purpose of regulatory mechanisms that control the diet-induced lipoprotein cholesterol dynamics is rarely discussed in the context of human adaptive biology. We argue that better mechanistic explanations can help resolve lingering controversies, with the potential to redefine aspects of research, clinical practice, dietary advice, public health

From Elemental Sulfur to Hydrogen Sulfide in Agricultural Soils and Plants.

Sulfur is an essential element in determining the productivity and quality of agricultural products. It is also an element associated with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stress in plants. In agricultural practice, sulfur has broad use in the form of sulfate fertilizers and, to a lesser extent, as sulfite biostimulants. When used in the form of bulk elemental sulfur, or micro- or nano-sulfur, applied both to the soil and to the canopy, the element undergoes a series of changes in its oxidation state, produced by various intermediaries that apparently act as biostimulants and promoters of stres

Switching Lifestyles Is an in vivo Adaptive Strategy of Bacterial Pathogens.

Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens exist as planktonic cells only at limited times during their life cycle. In response to environmental signals such as temperature, pH, osmolality, and nutrient availability, pathogenic bacteria can adopt varied cellular fates, which involves the activation of virulence gene programs and/or the induction of a sessile lifestyle to form multicellular surface-attached communities. In Salmonella, SsrB is the response regulator which governs the lifestyle switch from an intracellular virulent state to form dormant biofilms in chronically infected hosts. Usin

Phenotype and genotype alteration during adaptive evolution of Enterococcus faecalis to antimicrobials.

The current worldwide emergence of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria constitutes an important growing public health threat. The mechanisms of the emergence and dissemination of resistance remain to be elucidated. Adaptation laboratory evolution provide an approach to investigate the acquisition of de novo mutations that confers drug resistance. In our study, 3 Enterococcus faecalis clinical isolates and E. faecalis ATCC29212 were evolved resistant to 8 kinds of antimicrobials spanning five chemical classes, including ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, gatifloxacin, penicillin, imipenem, vancomyc

Spatial variation in soil biota mediates plant adaptation to a foliar pathogen.

Theory suggests that below-ground spatial heterogeneity may mediate host-parasite evolutionary dynamics and patterns of local adaptation, but this has rarely been tested in natural systems. Here, we test experimentally for the impact of spatial variation in the abiotic and biotic soil environment on the evolutionary outcome of the interaction between the host plant Plantago lanceolata and its specialist foliar pathogen Podosphaera plantaginis. Plants showed no adaptation to the local soil environment in the absence of natural enemies. However, quantitative, but not qualitative, plant resistanc

Venomics: integrative venom proteomics and beyond.

Venoms are integrated phenotypes that evolved independently in, and are used for predatory and defensive purposes by, a wide phylogenetic range of organisms. The same principles that contribute to the evolutionary success of venoms, contribute to making the study of venoms of great interest in such diverse fields as evolutionary ecology and biotechnology. Evolution is profoundly contingent, and nature also reinvents itself continuosly. Changes in a complex phenotypic trait, such as venom, reflect the influences of prior evolutionary history, chance events, and selection. Reconstructing the nat

Effect of adaptation process of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to didecyldimethylammonium chloride in 2-propanol on bactericidal efficiency of this active substance.

BACKGROUND: Microorganisms are characterized by two types of resistance innate and acquired. Innate resistance is associated with the construction of the surface structures. Wide use of active substances as antimicrobial compounds, especially in inhibitory concentrations, may promote the acquisition of bacterial resistance to these substances in the process of adaptation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine changes in efficiency of didecyldimethylammonium chloride in 2-propanol (CMAP) against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, which were adapted to this active substance.
