[Keratomycosis due to Fusarium oxysporum treated with the combination povidone iodine eye drops and oral fluconazole].

In developing countries where systemic antifungal are often unavailable, treatment of filamentous fungi infection as Fusarium is sometimes very difficult to treat. We report the case of a keratomycosis due to Fusarium oxysporum treated by povidone iodine eye drops and oral fluconazole. The diagnosis of abscess in the cornea was retained after ophthalmological examination for a 28-year-old man with no previous ophthalmological disease, addressed to the Ophthalmological clinic at the University Hospital Le Dantec in Dakar for a left painful red eye with decreased visual acuity lasting for 15 day

Development and evaluation of fast forming nano-composite hydrogel for ocular delivery of diclofenac.

In this paper, a fast forming nano-composite hydrogel was developed for potential application in ocular drug delivery. The optical transmission (OT) as well as rheological properties of nano-composite hydrogel was characterized. The developed nano-composite hydrogel given a high diclofenac micelles loading and provided a sustained release manner of diclofenac within 6h. The developed nano-composite hydrogel formulation was administrated into the eye as flowable solution, quickly forming a hydrogel that is able to resist of the blinking and flushing of tear, yet resulting in the prolonged resid

Corneal ulcers in horses.

Corneal ulceration is commonly diagnosed by equine veterinarians. A complete ophthalmic examination as well as fluorescein staining, corneal cytology, and corneal bacterial (aerobic) and fungal culture and sensitivity testing are necessary for all infected corneal ulcers. Appropriate topical antibiotics, topical atropine, and systemic NSAIDs are indicated for all corneal ulcers. If keratomalacia (melting) is observed, anticollagenase/antiprotease therapy, such as autologous serum, is indicated. If fungal infection is suspected, antifungal therapy is a necessity. Subpalpebral lavage systems all

Conjunctival and corneal tolerability assessment of ocular naltrexone niosomes and their ingredients on the hen's egg chorioallantoic membrane and excised bovine cornea models.

This study aimed at combining the hen's egg test-chorioallantoic membrane (HET-CAM), bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) test and histological examination of excised corneas to evaluate the conjunctival and corneal toxicity of niosomes and their ingredients. Various surfactant/lipid combinations and concentrations (1-10%, w/v) were investigated for the ocular delivery of an ambitious drug (naltrexone hydrochloride) for treatment of diabetic keratopathy. Four niosomal formulations were investigated and found to be non irritant to the 10 days old HET-CAMs (an acceptable conjunctival m

Pharmacotherapy of dry eye.

INTRODUCTION: based on data from the largest studies of dry eye to date - the Women's Health Study (WHS) and the Physicians' Health Study (PHS) - and other studies, it has been estimated that about 3.23 million women and 1.68 million men, for a total of 4.91 million Americans aged ≥ 50 years, have dry eye. Tens of millions more have less severe symptoms and probably a more episodic manifestation of the disease that is notable only during contact with some adverse contributing factor(s), such as low humidity or contact lens wear. Dry eye disease is a common yet frequently under-recognized publi

The role of topical moxifloxacin, a new antibacterial in Europe, in the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis.

This article discusses current practice in the treatment of conjunctivitis and how the use of topical moxifloxacin can increase therapeutic effectiveness, reduce treatment failures and, consequently, be cost effective and reduce the societal burden of the disorder. Current practice and effectiveness data were derived from the literature. Data on healthcare utilization as a result of treatment failure were collected by survey and the cost of treatment was defined using national costings. A decision-analytic model to assess cost effectiveness was developed and the impact on the healthcare budget

Topical treatment of non-healing corneal epithelial ulcers in dogs with aminocaproic acid.

The potential efficacy of topical epsilon-aminocaproic acid, an antiplasmin agent, in the treatment of persistent corneal epithelial defects was evaluated in a study of the medical records of 44 dogs, in which 51 eyes had been diagnosed with a corneal epithelial defect lasting more than 10 days, with no apparent underlying cause. At an initial examination all the affected eyes had had non-adherent epithelium removed. Thirty-four of the eyes in 28 dogs examined between January 2000 and March 2003 were also treated by the topical application of a solution of 35.7 mg/ml ophthalmic aminocaproic ac

Update on ocular allergy treatment.

Allergy affects > 15% of the world population with a higher prevalence of 30% in westernised industrialised countries, such as the US. Allergy commonly affects various target organs including the eyes, nose, sinuses, ears, lungs and skin. However, the ocular component may be the most common and initially the most prominent disabling feature. Some patients are affected for only a few weeks to months while others have symptoms that last throughout the year. The associated healthcare costs related to allergic conjunctivitis has been commonly nestled with allergic rhinitis and has been reported to

Acanthamoeba keratitis.

Acanthamoeba species are an important cause of microbial keratitis that may cause severe ocular inflammation and visual loss. The first cases were recognized in 1973, but the disease remained very rare until the 1980s, when an increase in incidence mainly associated with contact lens wear was reported. There is an increased risk when contact lens rinsing and soaking solutions are prepared with nonsterile water and salt tablets. The clinical picture is often characterized by severe pain with an early superficial keratitis that is often treated as herpes simplex infection. Subsequently a charact

Dorzolamide: development and clinical application of a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor.

Systemic carbonic anhydrase inhibitors are among the most powerful agents to lower intraocular pressure. Unfortunately, their use is frequently accompanied by undesired side effects. Some are due to the relatively large amounts of drug that have to be systemically administered to inhibit the carbonic anhydrase in the ciliary processes. Recently, dorzolamide, a topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, has become commercially available for clinical use. This article reviews the development of topical carbonic anhydrase inhibitors with special reference to dorzolamide. When administered three-times

Solutions containing miotic agents: effects on corneal transendothelial electrical potential difference.

BACKGROUND: Anterior chamber miotic solutions are widely used during anterior chamber surgery. We examined the effects of solutions containing miotic agents such as carbachol and/or acetylcholine on corneal endothelial pumping activity. METHODS: We monitored, in vitro, the transendothelial electrical potential difference of isolated rabbit corneal endothelial preparations. As controls, we used solutions without miotics. RESULTS: We found that a solution containing 55 mM acetylcholine and minimal amounts of salts (Miochol E) maintains transendothelial electrical potential difference some 30%

Topical and subcutaneous alpha-interferon fails to suppress corneal neovascularization.

Corneal neovascularization is a potentially blinding complication of a variety of corneal disorders. alpha-Interferon has been shown to inhibit endothelial cell migration and proliferation. It has been used successfully in the treatment of pediatric pulmonary hemangioma and hairy cell leukemia. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of topical and subcutaneous (s.c.) alpha-interferon on corneal neovascularization. Corneal neovascularization was induced in 40 male New Zealand white rabbits by placing silk sutures (7.0) bilaterally in each rabbit eye at the 3 and 9 o'clock positions of
