Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior among Young Adolescents in 68 LMICs, and Their Relationships with National Economic Development.

It is unclear whether physical activity and sedentary behavior are associated with economic development in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to assess the association between these two behaviors and country economic development among young adolescents in LMICs. Data came from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) conducted between 2009 and 2016 in 68 LMICs. A total of 180,298 adolescents aged 12-15 years were included; 15.3% of young adolescents achieved the recommended level for sufficient physical activity (≥60 min/day of physical activity of any kind per week

Intramedullary Fixation of Both Bone Forearm Fractures in Children and Adolescents: Healing Correlates With Development of the Olecranon Apophysis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to determine whether healing of both bone forearm (BBFA) fractures in children and adolescents is associated with the stage of the olecranon apophysis development as described by the Diméglio modification of the Sauvegrain method. METHODS: Records were reviewed from 2 children's hospitals from 1997 to 2008 to identify all patients younger than 18 years of age who had BBFA fractures treated with intramedullary nail fixation. Sixty-three patients were identified meeting inclusion and exclusion criteria. The stage of the olecranon apophysis was noted on

Fertility counseling and sperm banking among adolescents and adults treated for cancer with curative intent in a developing country.

PURPOSE: In developing countries, a higher percentage of patients develop cancer at a younger age. Cancer survival rates have significantly improved, highlighting the importance of survivorship programs that address late complications related to cancer itself or its treatment. The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of fertility counseling and sperm banking and related factors among at-risk males newly diagnosed with cancer and planning to receive a potentially curative anticancer therapy. METHODS: Medical records and hospital database of young male patients with newly diagnos

Measuring Quality of Life in Parents or Caregivers of Children and Adolescents with Celiac Disease: Development and Content Validation of the Questionnaire.

Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder triggered by the ingestion of gluten and affects approximately 1% of the global population. Currently, the only treatment available is lifelong strict adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD). Chronic diseases such as CD affect patients and their family members' quality of life (QoL); particularly parents and caregivers who play an essential role in the child's care and treatment. A higher level of psychological distress has been found in the parents of children with chronic ailments due to limited control over the child's daily activities and the chi

Development of a Social Network-Based Intervention to Overcome Multilevel Barriers to ART Adherence Among Adolescents in Brazil.

Brazil's comprehensive HIV treatment program does not specifically address ART adherence challenges for adolescents-a group accounting for the largest number of incident HIV infections in Brazil. We conducted three focus groups with 24 adolescents (age 15-24) living with HIV in Rio de Janeiro, separately for cisgender men who have sex with men, heterosexual-identified cisgender men and women, and transgender women of any sexual orientation, and key informant interviews (n = 7) with infectious disease specialists and HIV/AIDS service organization staff. Content analysis identified socioecologic

Developing a Problem-solving Intervention to Improve Self-Management and Transition Readiness in Adolescents with Sickle Cell Disease.

PURPOSE: Adolescents and young adults (AYA) with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at risk for serious complications including increased morbidity and early mortality during their transition from pediatric to adult care. Self-management support may help improve transition outcomes in this vulnerable population. Interventions based on teaching problem solving skills have been shown to improve adherence to therapy for AYA with other chronic disease and is a promising intervention in SCD. We sought patient and parent perspectives on improving self-management and input on the development of a problem-

Building resilient families: Developing family interventions for preventing adolescent depression and HIV in low resource settings.

Depression contributes significantly to the global burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. In South Africa, individuals may be at elevated risk for depression due to HIV and AIDS, violence, and poverty. For adolescents, resilience-focused prevention strategies have the potential to reduce onset of depression. Involving families in promoting adolescent mental health is developmentally appropriate, but few existing interventions take a family approach to prevention of adolescent depression. We conducted a qualitative investigation from 2013-2015 to inform the development of a fami

The development of externalizing symptoms from late childhood through adolescence: A longitudinal study of Mexican-origin youth.

Youth who exhibit externalizing problems during childhood and adolescence are at an increased risk for a wide range of detrimental life outcomes. Despite the profound consequences of externalizing problems for children, their families, and their communities, we know less about the precise trajectory of externalizing symptoms across late childhood and adolescence, because of the paucity of fine-grained longitudinal research. The present study examined the development of externalizing symptoms in a large sample (N = 674) of Mexican-origin youth, assessed annually from age 10 to 17. Specifically,

Development of Metabolic Syndrome in Drug-Naive Adolescents After 12 Months of Second-Generation Antipsychotic Treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Mental illness is often accompanied by poor physical health and shorter life expectancy. Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are suspected of increasing cardiovascular risk, possibly through development of metabolic syndrome (MetS), and the risk of adverse outcome is even higher if obesity or metabolic aberration starts in childhood or adolescence. METHODS: Drug-naive adolescents were recruited after contact with an outpatient Psychosis Team. Changes relative to baseline in body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (FBG), trigl

Using a gamified monitoring app to change adolescents' snack intake: the development of the REWARD app and evaluation design.

BACKGROUND: As the snacking pattern of European adolescents is of great concern, effective interventions are necessary. Till now health promotion efforts in children and adolescents have had only limited success in changing adolescents' eating patterns and anthropometrics. Therefore, the present study proposes an innovative approach to influence dietary behaviors in youth based on new insights on effective behavior change strategies and attractive intervention channels to engage adolescents. This article describes the rationale, the development, and evaluation design of the 'Snack Track School

Assessing Asthma Symptoms in Adolescents and Adults: Qualitative Research Supporting Development of the Asthma Daily Symptom Diary.

BACKGROUND: Despite the widespread availability of patient-reported asthma questionnaires, instruments developed in accordance with present regulatory expectations are lacking. To address this gap, the Patient-Reported Outcome (PRO) Consortium's Asthma Working Group has developed a patient-reported asthma daily symptom diary (ADSD) for use in clinical research to assess outcomes and support medical product labeling claims in adults and adolescents with asthma. OBJECTIVES: To summarize the qualitative research conducted to inform the initial development of the ADSD and to provide evidence for

Aberrant development of post-movement beta rebound in adolescents and young adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Dependent on maternal (e.g. genetic, age) and exposure (frequency, quantity, and timing) variables, the effects of prenatal alcohol exposure on the developing fetus are known to vary widely, producing a broad range of morphological anomalies and neurocognitive deficits in offspring, referred to as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Maternal drinking during pregnancy remains a leading risk factor for the development of intellectual disabilities in the US. While few functional findings exist today that shed light on the mechanisms responsible for the observed impairments in individuals wit

Development of a tool to describe overall health, social independence and activity limitation of adolescents and young adults with disability.

There is a need for research that focuses on the correlation between self-perceived quality of life (QoL) and the health outcomes of adolescents with disability transitioning to adulthood. To better understand the transition experience of adolescents and young adults with disability, we developed a questionnaire to assess the impact of disability on QoL. We recruited 174 participants who were 15-24 years old and diagnosed with Fragile X syndrome (FXS), spina bifida (SB) or muscular dystrophy (MD) and conducted an exploratory factor analysis to identify factors that characterize QoL. Five facto

Comparing service use and costs among adolescents with autism spectrum disorders, special needs and typical development.

Autism spectrum disorder is a complex condition that requires specialised care. Knowledge of the costs of autism spectrum disorder, especially in comparison with other conditions, may be useful to galvanise policymakers and leverage investment in education and intervention to mitigate aspects of autism spectrum disorder that negatively impact individuals with the disorder and their families. This article describes the services and associated costs for four groups of individuals: adolescents with autistic disorder, adolescents with other autism spectrum disorders, adolescents with other special

[Impact of the method choice and the extent of correction on the development of visual evoked potentials in children and adolescents with refractive anomalies].

The article discusses a possible impact of different refraction correction methods, providing full or partial correction, on visual acuity and the development of visual evoked potentials in children and adolescents with myopia and myopic astigmatism. The accuracy of identification of visual evoked potentials depends, as shown in the article, on the extent of the correction chosen and the method used. In childhood the visual system is very susceptible to visual afferent deficit. The permanent deficit of visual information impedes further maturation of the visual analyzer, i.e. the development o

Metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma related to primary tumor development in childhood or adolescence: significant link to SDHB mutations.

PURPOSE: To present data on the high rate of SDHB mutations in patients with metastatic pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma whose initial tumor presentation began in childhood or adolescence. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 2000 to 2010, 263 patients with pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma were evaluated through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD. Of the 263 patients, 125 patients were found to have metastatic disease; of these 125 patients, 32 patients presented with a tumor before 20 years of age. An additional 17 patients presented with a tumor before 20 years of age but demonstrated

Osteopenia in Gaucher disease develops early in life: response to imiglucerase enzyme therapy in children, adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: In Gaucher disease (GD), acid-β-glucosidase (GBA1) gene mutations result in defective glucocerebrosidase and variable combinations of hematological, visceral, and diverse bone disease. Osteopenia is highly prevalent, but its age of onset during the natural course of GD is not known. It is also unclear if the degree of improvement in osteopenia, secondary to imiglucerase enzyme therapy, differs by the age of the patient. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that osteopenia develops early in life, during the natural course of type 1 Gaucher disease (GD1), and that its response to treatment is

Socio-environmental factors associated with pubertal development in female adolescents: the role of prepubertal tobacco and alcohol use.

PURPOSE: Alcohol administered to laboratory animals has been shown to suppress puberty-related hormones and delay puberty by interfering with ovarian development and function. The effects of early substance use on human pubertal development are relatively unexplored. METHODS: This cross-sectional study of 3,106 female adolescents, aged 11-21 years, evaluated the association between prepubertal alcohol and tobacco use and the onset of puberty. Ages at initial breast development, body hair growth, and menarche were self-reported. Prepubertal alcohol and tobacco use were defined as the age at fi

Effects of inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity symptoms on development of nicotine dependence from mid adolescence to young adulthood.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and smoking is well documented. However, it is unclear whether ADHD symptoms relate to nicotine dependence (ND) symptoms from adolescence to young adulthood. We sought to assess the relationship of ADHD Hyperactivity-Impulsivity (H/I) and Inattention (I) symptoms with ND symptoms in a community sample from adolescence to young adulthood (ages 18-21). METHODS: Participants were adolescents (n = 672) smoking at least one whole cigarette in their lifetime. Participants are members of a prospective cohort study (ages 1
