Neural connections between the hypothalamus and the liver.

After receiving information from afferent nerves, the hypothalamus sends signals to peripheral organs, including the liver, to keep homeostasis. There are two ways for the hypothalamus to signal to the peripheral organs: by stimulating the autonomic nerves and by releasing hormones from the pituitary gland. In order to reveal the involvement of the autonomic nervous system in liver function, we focus in this study on autonomic nerves and neuroendocrine connections between the hypothalamus and the liver. The hypothalamus consists of three major areas: lateral, medial, and periventricular. Each

Alterations in group Ia projections to motoneurons following spinal lesions in humans.

1. The hypothesis that the exaggerated tendon jerks and stretch reflexes that follow chronic spinal cord lesions in humans result from alterations in transmission from group I muscle afferents to motoneurons was tested by making observations on nine normal subjects and 25 patients with spinal cord lesions. All the patients had increased tendon jerks, one-third of them had both increased tendon jerks and increased, velocity-dependent stretch reflexes (i.e.g spasticity). 2. Changes in the firing probability of single, voluntary-activated soleus or tibialis anterior motor units during stimulation

Reinnervation of renal afferent and efferent nerves at 5.5 and 11 months after catheter-based radiofrequency renal denervation in sheep.

Previous studies indicate that catheter-based renal denervation reduces blood pressure and renal norepinephrine spillover in human resistant hypertension. The effects of this procedure on afferent sensory and efferent sympathetic renal nerves, and the subsequent degree of reinnervation, have not been investigated. We therefore examined the level of functional and anatomic reinnervation at 5.5 and 11 months after renal denervation using the Symplicity Flex catheter. In normotensive anesthetized sheep (n=6), electric stimulation of intact renal nerves increased arterial pressure from 99±3 to 107

Docetaxel-induced nail changes--a neurogenic mechanism: a case report.

Docetaxel is a new taxoid widely used in chemotherapy for advanced breast cancer and other solid malignancies. Painful nail changes with onycholysis occur in about 40% of docetaxel-treated patients as a prominent adverse effect. We report a patient with a complete peripheral palsy of the right arm due to advanced breast cancer with diffuse tumor infiltration of the brachial plexus. Treatment with docetaxel led to onycholysis at all extremities except the paretic hand. Sensory and motoric innervation measured by nerve conduction studies showed a complete loss of large nerve fiber function of th

Responses of neurons in rostral ventromedial medulla to nociceptive stimulation of craniofacial region and tail in rats.

The rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) plays a key role in the endogenous modulation of nociceptive transmission in the central nervous system (CNS). The primary aim of this study was to examine whether the activities of RVM neurons were related to craniofacial nociceptive behaviour (jaw-motor response, JMR) as well as the tail-flick response (TF). The activities of RVM neurons and TF and JMR evoked by noxious heating of the tail or perioral skin were recorded simultaneously in lightly anaesthetized rats. Tail or perioral heating evoked the TF and JMR, and the latency of the JMR was significan

Central-peripheral neural network interactions evoked by vagus nerve stimulation: functional consequences on control of cardiac function.

Using vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), we sought to determine the contribution of vagal afferents to efferent control of cardiac function. In anesthetized dogs, the right and left cervical vagosympathetic trunks were stimulated in the intact state, following ipsilateral or contralateral vagus nerve transection (VNTx), and then following bilateral VNTx. Stimulations were performed at currents from 0.25 to 4.0 mA, frequencies from 2 to 30 Hz, and a 500-μs pulse width. Right or left VNS evoked significantly greater current- and frequency-dependent suppression of chronotropic, inotropic, and lusitro

Return of spinal reflex after spinal cord surgery for brachial plexus avulsion injury.

Motor but not sensory function has been described after spinal cord surgery in patients with brachial plexus avulsion injury. In the featured case, motor-related nerve roots as well as sensory spinal nerves distal to the dorsal root ganglion were reconnected to neurons in the ventral and dorsal horns of the spinal cord by implanting nerve grafts. Peripheral and sensory functions were assessed 10 years after an accident and subsequent spinal cord surgery. The biceps stretch reflex could be elicited, and electrophysiological testing demonstrated a Hoffman reflex, or Hreflex, in the biceps muscle

Layer-specific touch-dependent facilitation and depression in the somatosensory cortex during active whisking.

Brains adapt to new situations by retuning their neurons. The most common form of neuronal adaptation, typically observed with repetitive stimulations of passive sensory organs, is depression (responses gradually decrease until stabilized). We studied cortical adaptation when stimuli are acquired by active movements of the sensory organ. In anesthetized rats, artificial whisking was induced at 5 Hz, and activity of individual neurons in layers 2-5 was recorded during whisking in air (Whisking condition) and whisking against an object (Touch condition). Response strengths were assessed by spike

Central vestibular system: vestibular nuclei and posterior cerebellum.

The vestibular nuclei and posterior cerebellum are the destination of vestibular primary afferents and the subject of this review. The vestibular nuclei include four major nuclei (medial, descending, superior and lateral). In addition, smaller vestibular nuclei include: Y-group, parasolitary nucleus, and nucleus intercalatus. Each of the major nuclei can be subdivided further based primarily on cytological and immunohistochemical histological criteria or differences in afferent and/or efferent projections. The primary afferent projections of vestibular end organs are distributed to several ips

Neuroanatomical and histochemical evidence for the presence of common lateral line and inner ear efferents and of efferents to the basilar papilla in a frog, Xenopus laevis.

The claimed absence of efferents to the basilar papilla in frogs was reexamined in Xenopus laevis with the use of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) histochemistry. We also tested the presence of common lateral line and inner ear efferents by employing neuroanatomical tract tracing techniques. Our data show some AChE-positive fibers to the basilar papilla and all other sensory epithelia of the inner ear in larval and postmetamorphic frogs. Labeling of anterior lateral line and inner ear fibers with different fluorescing dextran amines resulted in a few double labeled efferent cells in the brainstem.

Thalamic projections to the hippocampal and entorhinal areas in the cat.

The thalamic projections to the hippocampal formation and to the subicular and entorhinal areas in the cat have been studied with retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) or wheat germ agglutinin conjugated to HRP (WGA-HRP) and anterograde transport of WGA-HRP. Retrograde transport tracers injected in various parts of these cortices resulted in labeled cells in the midline, anterior, and lateral dorsal nuclei. Injections into the hippocampal formation or the subiculum led to retrograde labeling of cells in the reuniens nucleus of the ipsilateral thalamus throughout its rostrocaudal

Interhemispheric connections of cortical sensory areas in tree shrews.

Interhemispheric connections were studied in tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) after multiple injections of horseradish peroxidase or horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheat germ agglutinin into the cortex of one cerebral hemisphere. After an appropriate survival period, the areal pattern of connections was revealed by flattening the other hemisphere, cutting sections parallel to the cortical surface, and staining with tetramethylbenzidine. Architectonic boundaries were identified by using sections stained for myelinated fibers. Labeled cells and axon terminations formed largely overlapping di

Afferent connections to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis.

A systematic analysis of the distribution of cells containing horseradish peroxidase (HRP) end-product following HRP injections in the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) revealed a topographic distribution of input from the amygdala. The appearance of HRP cells in the medial amygdaloid nucleus was associated with HRP injections in all parts of the amygdala except its most lateral portion. Injections of HRP confined to the anterolateral portion of the BNST resulted in extensive HRP labeling of cells in the basolateral amygdala, the central nucleus, and the amygdala hippocampal area. [Vertical vergence pathways].

Two pathways for vertical vergence probably exist: the cortical one carrying a psycho-optical reflex, the other sub-cortical connected to the vestibular apparatus and more probably to the otolith system. The sub-cortical pathway is essentially a vestibulo-cerebellar oculomotor pathway; but in addition there certainly exist direct vestibulo-oculomotor connections and long tracts passing through the interstitial nucleus of Cajal and the reticular formation.

Review article: serotonin receptors and transporters -- roles in normal and abnormal gastrointestinal motility.

The gut is the only organ that can display reflexes and integrative neuronal activity even when isolated from the central nervous system. This activity can be triggered by luminal stimuli that are detected by nerves via epithelial intermediation. Epithelial enterochromaffin cells act as sensory transducers that activate the mucosal processes of both intrinsic and extrinsic primary afferent neurones through their release of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT). Intrinsic primary afferent neurones are present in both the submucosal and myenteric plexuses. Peristaltic and secretory reflexes are initiated b

"Visual sensory trick" in patient with cervical dystonia.

Sensory tricks are clinical maneuvers that may partially relieve dystonic contractions. Any clinical maneuver that modulates afferent sensory and efferent motor pathways could be used as a sensory trick in patients with cervical dystonia. Although various sensory tricks have been described to reduce cervical dystonia, little is known about the exact mechanisms by which they operate. We report a case of cervical dystonia that was alleviated through the use of a visual-sensory trick. Our findings suggest that visual stimulation might be an effective sensory trick in cervical dystonia by compensa

Deoxycholic acid activates colonic afferent nerves via 5-HT3 receptor-dependent and -independent mechanisms.

Increased bile acids in the colon can evoke increased epithelial secretion resulting in diarrhea, but little is known about whether colonic bile acids contribute to abdominal pain. This study aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying activation of colonic extrinsic afferent nerves and their neuronal cell bodies by a major secondary bile acid, deoxycholic acid (DCA). All experiments were performed on male C57BL/6 mice. Afferent sensitivity was evaluated using in vitro extracellular recordings from mesenteric nerves in the proximal colon (innervated by vagal and spinal afferents) and distal

Sensory neural targets for the treatment of cough.

1. Cough is a primary defensive reflex that protects the airways from potentially harmful stimuli. 2. During many respiratory diseases, the cough reflex threshold is lowered and coughing becomes excessive. 3. Currently available therapeutics are mostly ineffective at suppressing excessive coughing. 4. In the present review, we describe the sensory neural pathways involved in cough, how these pathways may become dysfunctional in airway disease and the most recent advances that have been made in identifying future targets for cough suppression.

Noxious stimulation of emesis.

This review will focus on the mechanisms of emesis initiated or inhibited from receptors located in the periphery or activated by a peripherally released humoral factor. Excitatory and inhibitory receptors have been found in the thorax. Nausea and vomiting sometimes occur after coronary artery occlusion or with vasovagal syncope, and the receptors of this emetic response are probably tension receptors of the left ventricle. The thorax is also source of antiemetic receptors. Vagal section above the level of the heart causes an intractable vomiting syndrome and central cervical vagal stimulation
