Sera were collected from 3753 cows in Benhazi cow project (Libya). The rose bengal, complement fixation and serum agglutination serological tests were employed to test these sera for evidence of brucellosis. The overall reactivity was detected in all (0.3%) cows. The prevalence of the highest reactors (1.0%) was in Abo Atney Dairy Station. In other dairy stations investigated the incidence of brucellosis ranged from zero to 0.3%.

Subcellular fractions of mice thymocytes were used for sensitization of rabbits. The antisera were examined for their immunosuppressive potency in vivo by allogeneic murine tumor metastases system and on skingraft survival and in vitro by leukocyte agglutination tests. The results indicated that the most potent immunosuppressive antisera was that against the second fraction (Fr. 2) of the detergent soluble endoplasmic reticulum fraction from thymocytes.

Antigen from axenically and with crithidia monoxenically grown amebae are compared in complement fixation test and indirect hemagglutination test. While similar reactivity was observed in indirect hemagglutination monoxenic antigen yielded extremely higher titers in complement fixation tests. Transient latex agglutinations of severely ill malaria tropica patients proved to be spontaneous in nature. It is recommended that extra latex is added to the test kits to provide for a check of positive sera for spontaneous agglutination. Glutaraldehyde treated and sensitized sheep red cells were stored

The persistence of anti-leptospiral IgM and IgG antibodies and agglutinating antibodies was studied in serologically confirmed cases of severe leptospirosis during the acute illness and over periods of several years after recovery. The antibody response in non-leptospirosis patients presenting to hospital with similar symptoms over the same period of time was used to estimate the background antibody level to leptospirosis in the community. All patients enrolled in the study had blood samples collected twice in the acute stage of illness, once during convalescence and then annually from the tim

A case of primary pulmonary cryptococcosis is reported. A 76-year-old man, without underlying disease or immunological abnormalities, was admitted to the hospital. Chest X-ray revealed diffuse infiltrative shadows considered at first to be community-acquired pneumonia. A diagnosis of pulmonary cryptococcosis was performed using fluconazole, miconazole and transbronchial inhalation of amphotericin B. Cryptococcal antigen detection was performed by two latex agglutination methods: Crypto-test and Sero-direct test (Eiken-test). Comparing the results of the two tests, sensitivity was superior with

The principle of the latex agglutination technique was applied on the serodiagnosis of Chagas' disease. The latex particles coated with antigen from Trypanosoma cruzi are agglutinated by antibodies against T. cruzi in the serum of patients suffering thereof. In 11600 comparative determinations worked out mainly in a number of South American laboratories, the sensitivity of this test was compared with xenodiagnosis, CF, IFT and IHA. The latex Chagas test shows a mean coincidence of 90% with xenodiagnosis, 88% with CF, 75% with IFT, and 83% with IHA. The results indicate that the test is a usefu

The authors evaluated a simple latex agglutination test for the serodiagnosis of acute human leptospirosis. A total of 380 serum samples from 85 confirmed leptospirosis patients and 202 non-leptospirosis patients were selected Using the selected cut-off value of weakly positive, the overall sensitivity and overall specificity of the test were 94.1% and 97.0% respectively. The weighted kappa value for agreement reading between two independent examiners was 0.82. When focused on the first sera obtained from the patients, the sensitivity of the test for acute infection sera was only 17.6%. The la

The Wellcolex Colour Salmonella and Shigella tests are rapid latex agglutination procedures for grouping Salmonella and Shigella using an antibody attached to multicolored latex particles. The tests correctly grouped 46 (100%) of 46 Salmonella clinical isolates in groups A through E and G, 42 (100%) of 42 Shigella clinical isolates, and seven (88%) of eight Shigella stock cultures. The stock culture missed had been passed through many transfers and may have lost some of its antigenicity. The Wellcolex Colour Salmonella test was also found useful in detecting and grouping Salmonella spp. direct

Serum specimens from 163 persons with Lyme disease, tick-borne or louse-borne relapsing fever, yaws, syphilis, leptospirosis, or Rocky Mountain spotted fever were analyzed to assess the specificity of indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) tests, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and microscopic agglutination (MA) procedures. Strong cross-reactivity occurred when sera from individuals with Lyme disease, tick-borne relapsing fever, and louse-borne relapsing fever were tested against heterologous Borrelia antigens. Profound and transient thrombocytopenia of functional platelets without bleeding was observed in patients envenomed by Vipera a. ammodytes (Vaa). This condition was rapidly reversed by administration of F(ab)2 fragments of immunoglobulin G targeting the whole venom, leaving platelets fully functional. To investigate the potential role of snake venom C-type lectin-like proteins (snaclecs) in this process, Vaa-snaclecs were isolated from the crude venom using different liquid chromatographies. The purity of the isolated proteins was confirmed by Edman sequencing and mass spectrometry. The antith

Toxoplasma gondii and Leishmania infantum are zoonotic protozoal parasites. Serum samples were obtained from 186 donkeys (Equus africanus asinus) from Portugal and assessed for antibodies to T. gondii by the modified agglutination test (MAT). For titration of antibodies to Leishmania spp. the direct agglutination test was used (DAT). Eleven donkeys were seropositive for T. gondii with titres of 20 (n = 7), 80 (n = 2), 640 (n = 1) and ≥ 2560 (n = 1). One donkey was seropositive for Leishmania spp. (titre of 800). Donkeys in Portugal are exposed to and can be infected with T. gondii and Leishman

Timely detection of rare blood groups can be lifesaving, as individuals with these groups can only receive blood products from donors within the same group. The Bombay blood group is characterized by the absence of A, B, and H antigens on the surface of RBCs and can be easily missed in routine blood grouping if only forward grouping is performed. In reverse grouping, it is necessary to test the patient's serum with pooled O cells to differentiate between the O and Bombay blood groups. Further workup is conducted by testing the patient's red cells with anti-H lectin (antisera), where the absenc

The origin of 'natural' anti-sperm antibodies found in fertile humans, virgin girls, and boys before puberty, is quite obscure. One hypothetical mechanism relates their existence to inflammatory gastrointestinal entities: as a result of the disease, cross-reactive antibodies produced against gastrointestinal flora bind spermatozoa. To test this assumption, we evaluated the level of serum sperm antibodies after diarrhoeal infections. Serum samples from 17 patients with shigellosis and 12 patients with salmonellosis were screened for anti-sperm antibodies directed against sperm surface antigens

BACKGROUND: Several Kell-system antibodies are known to cause direct agglutination. Also, some specificities, such as anti-Ku, have been reported to react only via the indirect antiglobulin test (IAT).
METHODS: Herein, we describe the case of a 61-year-old alloimmunized white woman who presented to an outside hospital with a gastrointestinal (GI) bleed and a "possible anti-Ku" was reported with 3+ reactivity at PEG-IAT and at Ficin-IAT; in addition to an unidentified cold antibody. Subsequently, when the patient presented to a second outside hospital, an anti-Ku that caused 3+ to 4+ reactions

Sheep were immunized with killed Salmonella enterica serotype Urbana cells and their sera were tested in various serological tests for antibody to Brucella sp., Yersinia enterocolitica O:9 and Escherichia coli O:157 H:7. Of the eight sheep, all gave a positive agglutination reaction in the brucellosis buffered antigen plate agglutination test (BPAT), seven gave positive brucellosis standard tube agglutination test (TAT) and complement fixation test (CFT) results and four gave slightly positive reactions in a competitive enzyme immunoassay (CELISA). Seven sera were negative in an indirect enzym

The presence of Leptospira spp. and Brucella spp. antibodies was investigated in serum samples from 28 collared anteaters (Tamandua tetradactyla) kept in seven Brazilian zoos. Sera were tested against 19 Leptospira serovars using microscopic agglutination. Samples reacted to the following serovars: two (7.14%) to Patoc, three (10.71%) to Tarrasovi, three (10.71%) to both Patoc and Tarrasovi, two (7.14%) to Wolffi, and one (3.57%) to Australis. Two (7.14%) samples reacted to the buffered Brucella antigen test, but no confirmatory reaction occurred using the 2-mercaptoethanol slow slide agglutin

Biopsy specimens and serum samples from 140 patients with duodenal or gastric ulcer disease were examined. The presence of Helicobacter pylori was detected in 105 out of 140 subjects. Three testing techniques used in this study led to different results. Thus, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent essay enabled detection of elevated IgG antibodies to H. pylori in 108 serum samples. Passive microhemagglutination and latex agglutination, "Pyloriset" led to the detection of elevated titers in 102 and 83 serum samples, respectively. The sensitivity of the ELISA test was 93%, while the specificity was 81%

We describe a new agglutinated monothalamous foraminiferal species, Capsammina crassa sp. nov., based on integrated observations of the test morphology and the chemical characteristics of materials composing the test. The new species was found at a depth of <60 m on the East coast of Korea. The test morphology is typical of the genus Capsammina, comprising two or more mica plates with a ring of finely agglutinated mineral grains sandwiched between them and surrounding the cell body. There is no distinct test aperture. Elemental analyses of the agglutinated grains revealed 15 different types of

The value of the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the serological diagnosis of typhoid or paratyphoid fevers was tested with a collection of five sets of sera from 23 individuals who had no history of Salmonella infection from a nonendemic area (set 1) and from 143 patients from a highly endemic area (sets 2 to 5). The test was performed with a crude cell envelope fraction derived from Salmonella typhi. On the basis of results with sera in set 1, titers >160 (inverse of serum dilution) for immunoglobulin M (IgM) or >500 for IgG were regarded as signifying a specific antibody respo

Toxoplasmosis is a widely distributed zoonotic infection caused by the obligate intracellular apicomplexan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. It is mainly transmitted through the ingestion of oocysts shed by an infected cat acting as its definitive host. The key to effective control and treatment of toxoplasmosis is prompt and accurate detection of T. gondii infection. Several laboratory diagnostic methods have been established, including the most commonly used serological assays such as the dye test (DT), direct or modified agglutination test (DAT/MAT), indirect hemagglutination test (IHA), latex ag
