A general photoinduced copper-catalyzed carbonylative cross-coupling of alkyl iodides with amines for the synthesis of amides under mild conditions has been reported. Using a readily accessible, inexpensive copper complex, [Cu(bcp)DPEphos]PF6, the reaction proceeds at room temperature and accommodates a broad range of amines. Notably, the transformation can also be performed under ambient carbon monoxide pressure and can be extended to hydrazines, alcohols, and sodium hydroxide.

A visible-light-driven nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling of aryl halides with alkyl iodides has been developed using 9-fluorenone (FLN) as an inexpensive organic photosensitizer. The readily available FLN/diisopropylethylamine system enables C(sp2)-C(sp3) bond formation in moderate to high yields under mild conditions. The reaction accommodates aryl iodides, bromides, and chlorides as well as a range of primary and secondary alkyl iodides, while avoiding precious-metal photocatalysts and stoichiometric metal reductants. This study establishes FLN as a practical photosensitizer for n

On-surface reactions within self-assembled molecular networks offer a powerful strategy for nanoscale interface design, but must balance molecular layer stability with the local dynamics required for bond formation. Here, we develop a framework for identifying optimal reaction conditions in the topochemical polymerization of diacetylene monolayers on 2D materials. By systematically varying H-bonding headgroup chemistry (COOH, OH, and NH2), we examine how bulk and surface-confined structural transitions can be used to establish a window of optimal on-surface polymerization efficiency. Combining

Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a major marine foodborne pathogen and has been a global public health concern since the emergence of pandemic strains in 1996. The catalase KatE1 and alkyl hydroperoxide reductase subunit C1 (AhpC1) are important components of the oxidative stress defense system in this bacterium. In this study, we investigated the role of AhpC1 in protection against H₂O₂-induced oxidative stress using the ΔkatE1, ΔahpC1, ΔkatE1ΔkatE2, and ΔkatE1ΔahpC1 mutant strains of V. parahaemolyticus. Under H2O2 exposure, the ΔkatE1ΔkatE2 mutant showed the highest sensitivity, whereas the ΔkatE

Aldehyde C-H activation followed by coupling of the acyl fragment with a functionalized reagent represents an attractive approach for the synthesis of functionalized ketones. Although this strategy has been utilized for the formation of ketones with diverse substitution patterns, the majority of approaches are tailored for the synthesis of ketones that possess aryl functionality derived from either or both substrates involved in the catalytic union. In this work, the development of acylation reactions of alkyl and aryl bromides to directly access ketones from aliphatic and (hetero)aromatic ald

The high-temperature detergency of alkyl salicylates (ASs) as lubricant detergents is influenced by their composition and molecular structure. Analysis via normal-phase liquid chromatography (LC) combined with mass spectrometry (MS) reveals that alkyl salicylic acid (ASA) primarily consists of alkylphenol (AP), monoalkyl salicylic acid (MASA), dialkyl salicylic acid (DASA), and salicylic acid (SA), with MASA being the dominant component. Using reversed-phase LC and MS identification, MASA is characterized as a mixture of homologues with varying alkyl carbon chain lengths (C14, C16, and C18), w

Dithiocarbamates are widely recognized for their versatile applications in both agriculture as effective pesticides and medicine, where they serve as antifungal and anticancer agents. As a result, their synthesis has garnered significant attention in recent years. In this study, we present an efficient one-pot four-component approach for the synthesis of these scaffolds, utilizing aldehydes, ethyl acetoacetate, carbon disulfide (CS2), and amines. Initially, α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, serving as Michael acceptors, were generated from aldehydes and ethyl acetoacetate through a decarboxy

Dha A, a biocatalyst with pronounced efficacy in the degradation of mustard gas, is constrained by its inherent instability, which impedes its broader application. In this study, we encapsulated Dha A within a poloxamer-based thermosensitive hydrogel, a widely utilized protein carrier, to assess its physicochemical characteristics, catalytic performance, and stability enhancement. The Dha A-loaded thermosensitive gel (Dha A@TSG) exhibited interactions between Dha A and poloxamer molecules via hydrogen bonding, with an optimal gelation temperature of 25°C. This encapsulation strategy significan

Though great progress has been made to eliminate malaria globally, effective and inexpensive strategies to design new antimalarials are still required due to the problem of drug resistance to the currently used antimalarials. Herein, in continuation of our efforts to improve the therapeutic efficacy of 4-aminoquinoline-pyrimidine (4-AQ-Py) based molecular hybrids, a series of 4-AQ-Py hybrids linked through diamine-piperazine (flexible and rigid) linkers was synthesized and assessed for in vitro antiplasmodial activity. In the in vitro assay, these hybrids exhibited excellent potency and select

Aiming at developing a new class of quaternary pyridinium salts, the lead compound 1, characterized by a pyridine-3-yl chalcone framework, was rationally modified by inserting alkyl functions varying from 6 to 18 carbon units. Among the set, some valuable lead compounds were identified. Derivatives 4-6 were primarily active against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans, respectively (MIC = 1.56 and 3.125 μM). In comparison, analogs 4 and 5 showed significant activities against Escherichia coli (MIC = 6.25 μM). Interestingly, the antimicrobial property of compounds 4-6, as well as their an

Background/Objectives: Alkyl nitrites are a class of inhalant, commonly known as 'poppers'. Although having medical uses, some other effects include a 'rush', 'high', 'euphoria', or feeling of excitement. This has led to their recreational use, in different scenarios, since the mid-1960s. Adverse effects include tachycardia, migraine headaches, fainting and dizziness, and ventricular fibrillation. Death can occur from the inhalation or ingestion of nitrites. As part of its updated advice to the United Kingdom (UK) Government, the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs considered popper-relate

Benzene reduction by molecular complexes remains an important synthetic challenge, requiring harsh reaction conditions involving group I metals. Reductions of benzene, to date, typically result in a loss of aromaticity, although the benzene tetra-anion, a 10π-electron system, has been calculated to be stable and aromatic. Due to the lack of sufficiently potent reductants, four-electron reduction of benzene usually requires the use of group I metals. Here we demonstrate the four-electron reduction of benzene and some of its derivatives using a samarium(II) alkyl reagent, with no requirement for

The catalytic activity of dimethyl sulfate (DMS) and its higher homologs in converting carbonyl compounds to O,O-dimethylacetal/ketals is demonstrated. Our mechanistic investigations proved that previously reported Schmitz and Langvad claims stating DMS as an alkylating agent and a source of sulfuric acid in the acetalization of aldehydes were erroneous. Carbonyl compounds were converted to methyl, ethyl acetals/ketals, 1,3-dioxalanes and 1,3-dioxanes, and cyclohexane-1,3-diones into vinylogous esters. Selective aldehyde protection and ketone reduction were preferentially achieved in a single

An efficient atom-economical synthetic method has been proposed for the synthesis of stereoisomeric 3-alkyl-1-(α-hydroxydialkyl(diphenyl))phospholane oxides and 3-alkyl-1-(α-hydroxyalkylphenyl)phospholane oxides via the reaction of 3-alkyl-1H-phospholane oxides with aliphatic and aromatic ketones under mild conditions (20-22 °C, 12 h), conducted without the use of solvents or catalysts, achieving yields of 85-98%. Phosphorylation of acetylacetone by 3-alkyl-1H-phospholane oxides has been successfully achieved at both carbonyl groups. The mechanism of the addition of cyclic secondary phosphine

The asymmetric hydrofunctionalization of aliphatic alkenes without auxiliary or stabilizing groups presents a significant challenge in modern organic synthesis. We report herein the nickel-catalyzed enantioselective hydrosilylation of alkyl-substituted gem-difluoroalkenes, which enables the generation of chiral α-difluoromethylsilanes with excellent regio- and enantioselectivity. Moreover, the simultaneous construction of carbon- and silicon-stereogenic centers was achieved with excellent diastereo- and enantioselectivity using prochiral silanes. This method provides an efficient approach to a

COVID-19 pandemic stimulated tremendous efforts to develop therapeutic strategies targeting SARS-CoV-2, leading to the evaluation of a wide range of potential treatments in clinical trials. However, effective therapeutics remain elusive when the development of new variants and the limits of antiviral drugs is considered. Therefore, the development of antiviral drugs against SARS-CoV-2 is of paramount importance. Among potential drug targets, the SARS-CoV-2 nsp13 is highly attractive thanks to its pivotal role in viral replication. Pursuing our studies on the development of nsp13 inhibitors, in

DGA (diglycolamide) ligands show a different extraction behavior of trivalent metal ions by changing the branching alkyl chain length as well as the branching at the methylene position. There are no studies of these factors on the extraction efficiency of these DGA derivatives for the extraction of tetravalent actinides. We have evaluated four different DGA derivatives for the extraction of Np, Pu, and Th from molecular diluents. The n-butyl derivative shows enhanced extraction efficiency and branching gives rise to a reduction in the extraction efficiency of tetravalent ions. The distribution

Transition metal-catalyzed enantioconvergent cross-coupling of an alkyl precursor presents a promising method for producing enantioenriched C(sp3) molecules. Because alkyl alcohol is a ubiquitous and abundant family of feedstock in nature, the direct reductive coupling of alkyl alcohol and aryl halide enables efficient access to valuable compounds. Although several strategies have been developed to overcome the high bond dissociation energy of the C - O bond, the asymmetric pattern remains unknown. In this report, we describe the realization of an enantioconvergent deoxygenative reductive cros
