BACKGROUND: Tooth extraction is often accompanied by bone tissue loss. This systematic review aims to compare osteoplastic materials for socket preservation.
METHODS: This systematic review was carried out with the PRISMA statement. To identify relevant studies, a thorough literature search was executed in several databases, such as Medline, PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The inclusion criteria were restricted to randomized controlled trials, and their methodological quality was evaluated with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool (ROB 2).
RESULTS: Based on

Platelet concentrates (PCs) are biological autologous products derived from the patient's whole blood and consist mainly of supraphysiologic concentration of platelets and growth factors (GFs). These GFs have anti-inflammatory and healing enhancing properties. Overall, PCs seem to enhance bone and soft tissue healing in alveolar ridge augmentation, periodontal surgery, socket preservation, implant surgery, endodontic regeneration, sinus augmentation, bisphosphonate related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), osteoradionecrosis, closure of oroantral communication (OAC), and oral ulcers. On the ot…

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar ridge augmentation has been one of the most accepted treatments for restoring bone volume. Various products are available in particle forms, which have limitations, especially related to controlling the expected volume gain. A prefabricated computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) allogenic bone block could provide a good alternative.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A split-mouth randomized clinical trial included 10 patients with the bilateral posterior atrophic mandible (20 sides), who were randomly assigned to two groups with an allocation ratio of 1:1…

The repair and treatment of lost or damaged alveolar bone is of great significance in dentistry. Gene-activated matrix (GAM) technology provides a new way for bone regeneration. It is a local gene delivery system, which can not only recruit cells, but also influence their fate. For this purpose, we fabricated a bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) gene-loaded absorbable gelatin sponge (AGS) and studied its effect on promoting alveolar bone formation and preventing resorption following tooth extraction in rats. In order to obtain better transfection efficiency, polyethylenimine-alginate (PEI-al

AIM: This study identified the soft tissue changes of the alveolar ridge at different time points within 12 weeks after tooth extraction with and without socket augmentation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 38 patients with single tooth extractions, 40 sockets were augmented and 39 extraction sockets were not augmented. At 2, 4, 6, 8 and 12 weeks impressions were taken and casts digitized with a laser scanner. The horizontal and vertical changes were compared between augmented and non-augmented sites. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant.
RESULTS: The mean changes of augmented

BACKGROUND: Soft tissue grafting at dental implant sites has been proposed to enhance esthetic outcomes. A xenogeneic collagen matrix (XCM) was introduced as an alternative grafting material to connective tissue. Only short-term results are yet available.
METHODS: Sixty patients were treated in a randomized controlled trial with a connective tissue graft (n = 20, CTG group), an XCM (n = 20, XCM group), or received no graft (n = 20, NG group). The grafts were placed at the time of implant placement in a preserved alveolar ridge. The primary outcome was a change in mid-buccal mucosal level (MBM

BACKGROUND: Bone augmentation procedures to enable dental implant placement are frequently performed in practice.
METHODS: In this session the European Workshop on Periodontology discussed the evidence in support of the procedures and examined both adverse events and implant performance in the augmented bone. While the available evidence improved both in quantity and quality since previous workshops the conclusions that could be drawn were limited by elements of design and/or reporting that are amenable to improvement.
RESULTS: With regards to lateral bone augmentation, a sizable body of evi

The aim of this study is to present a predictable method for evaluating dimensional changes in the alveolar ridge through cone beam computed tomography (CT). Twenty subjects with single-rooted tooth extraction indication were selected for this preliminary report, which is part of a larger ongoing investigation. After extraction, two CT scans were performed; the first within 24 hours post-extraction (TC1) and the second 6 months (TC2) later. A radiographic guide with a radiopaque element placed along the tooth axis was developed to locate the same plane of reference in two different CT scans. F

Socket preservation after tooth extraction is a critical procedure to maintain alveolar ridge dimensions for future prosthetic rehabilitation. Autogenous dentin has emerged as a promising graft material due to its biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and similarity in composition to bone. A systematic search of MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted in January 2025 using a defined MeSH-based strategy. The search was limited to human clinical studies published in the past ten years. Only studies directly comparing groups with autogenous dentin grafts and spontaneous healing

The treatment of an infected socket with a severe facial dehiscence/ fenestration defect presents a therapeutic dilemma to the dental team. Both implant-supported restoration and fixed partial denture are viable options to restore function and occlusion, each with its benefits and disadvantages. In the present case report, a multi-stage regenerative approach was selected to enable implant-supported single crown. The first phase of the treatment after extraction of the maxillary central incisor was the stabilization of the blood clot with a collagen plug. Six weeks later, the surgical site was

The maxillary sinus is the largest among paranasal sinuses, lined with Schneiderian membrane having an innate osteogenic potential. The alveolar ridge resorption and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus are inescapable findings postextraction, which may diminish the vertical bone dimensions needed for endosteal implant placement. To overcome these problems, maxillary sinus augmentation using bone grafting materials has been advocated but the cost of graft materials, chances of graft contamination, graft allergy, etc., are the disadvantages/risks associated with it. In order to accomplish pass

Replacement resorption rate is a variable process, and is dependent on age, basal metabolic rate, extra-alveolar time, treatment prior to replantation, amount of root dentin, severity of trauma, and extent of periodontal ligament necrosis. In patients 7-16 years old a tooth is lost 3-7 years after the onset of root resorption. The complications that may develop as a consequence of ankylosis of a permanent incisor in children are due to the inevitable early loss of the traumatized tooth and local arrest of alveolar bone development. An ankylosed tooth should be removed before the changes become

The aim of this investigation was to assess the possibility of preserving the buccal and lingual plates of a postextraction socket from resorption using bone filler after tooth extraction. In 10 patients, 10 single extraction sites in the posterior area received a bone substitute. The osteoconductive material was covered by a collagen membrane in all cases. Contour changes of the alveolar process were evaluated intraorally using a surgical caliper over a 4-month period. Four months after extraction, a specimen was harvested from the area previously augmented with bone filler, and histologic an

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present case study is to describe the application of a modification of the Biologically-oriented Alveolar Ridge Preservation (BARP) principles in cases of peri-implant bone dehiscence (PIBD) due to a compromised alveolus at immediate implant placement (IIP).
METHODS: The technique is based on the stratification of three layers: a deep layer with a collagen sponge (CS) in the apical part of the alveolus (where the buccal bone plate was still present) to support the blood clot; a graft layer to correct the PIBD; and a superficial collagen layer to cover the graft

In many cases alveolar ridge atrophy causes severe alveolar ridge deficiency in horizontal and vertical direction. In cases of severe atrophy of the edentulous maxilla a maxillary retrognathism results. In this article, a new technique of solving this problem prior to implant placement is described. In six patients with severe atrophy of the edentulous maxilla a sinuslift operation and placement of dental implants were carried out in the posterior maxilla. In the anterior part of the maxilla a segmental split osteotomy and placement of two miniplate distractors were performed. One week after s

BACKGROUND: Repair of long-span mandibular defects with vascularized free fibular grafts is now a routine procedure. Vertical discrepancy between a graft segment and the occlusal plane can be resolved through several options, including delayed onlay bone graft, iliac bone reconstruction, fibula distraction, and double-barrel fibula flap grafts. The present study (level of evidence: level IV, case series) introduces a new method for mandibular augmentation, wherein a vascularized fibular segment was used to simulate the superior alveolar ridge of the neomandible, whereas a nonvascularized fibul
