Antiamebic antibody titers, were investigated in the feces and sera of 30 adults patients with intestinal amoebiasis, during the first two weeks of disease. Also, 29 control samples of healthy adult subjects were studied. The objective of this study was to determine if the local or systemic IgG, IgM or IgA levels were modified during the early stages of acute intestinal amoebiasis, for this purpose ELISA technique was use. During a five-year period at The New York Hospital, Entamoeba histolytica was identified in the stools of 20 men who had not traveled outside the New York area. All of the patients were found subsequently to homosexual. During this same period amebiasis was diagnosed in 30 men who had traveled; only two were homosexual. Of ten patients with E histolytica infection seen during the first year of this study, none were homosexual whereas eight of 11 patients in the fifth year were homosexual, suggesting a gradual increase during this period of this disease in the homosexual community.

The authors report the results of a retrospective study of patients hospitalized for serologically- confirmed hepatic amebiasis confirmed by serology in four French military hospitals from January 1, 2002, through December 31, 2012. The study included 58 patients (53 men, 5 women) with a median age of 41 years (range: 25-80). We determined yearly change in prevalence and risk factors for amebic colitis caused by intestinal invasive amebiasis among persons who underwent endoscopy and assessed differences between HIV-positive and HIV-negative persons in Japan. Entamoeba histolytica is a pathogenic ameba that has recently been recognized as an emerging pathogen in men who have sex with men (MSM) in Asia-Pacific countries where it is not endemic, i.e., Japan, Taiwan, and Republic of Korea. We report locally acquired invasive amebiasis in Sydney, Australia, exclusively in MSM.

One hundred eight serum samples from 106 patients were examined by Western blot analysis for the presence of antibodies to a recombinant fusion protein containing the sequence of the newly described serine-rich Entamoeba histolytica protein (SREHP).
