Non-Prescribed Buprenorphine Use Mediates the Relationship between Heroin Use and Kratom Use among a Sample of Polysubstance Users.

In Asia, Mitragyna speciosa (e.g., "kratom") has been used to mitigate alcohol and drug dependence. Some preliminary findings suggest kratom's potential use as an informal harm-reduction method in the United States, such as an opioid substitute or as a means of lessening opioid withdrawal symptoms. To determine correlates of past-year kratom use among a sample of polysubstance users enrolled in residential recovery programs in Kentucky, an anonymous survey was completed by clients in April 2017. Logistic regression was used to identify significant associations with past-year kratom use. Of the

Cognitive deficits in individuals with methamphetamine use disorder: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Methamphetamine has long been considered as a neurotoxic substance causing cognitive deficits. Recently, however, the magnitude and the clinical significance of the cognitive effects associated with methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) have been debated. To help clarify this controversy, we performed a meta-analysis of the cognitive deficits associated with MUD. METHODS: A literature search yielded 44 studies that assessed cognitive dysfunction in 1592 subjects with MUD and 1820 healthy controls. Effect size estimates were calculated using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis, for the fo

A qualitative study of methamphetamine initiation among Chinese male users: Patterns and policy implications.

China is a major producer and distributor of methamphetamine (meth) worldwide. Within the last two decades, China has seen rapid growth in meth use, especially among young men. However, patterns of Chinese male users' initiation of meth is rarely explored. To address this void in the literature, this study adopts China's mian'zi culture to explore Chinese male meth users' initiation patterns qualitatively. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 35 male meth users from seven Chinese compulsory drug treatment institutions. Thematic analysis was applied to data analysis. Most participants

The Body Mass Index, Blood Pressure, and Fasting Blood Glucose in Patients With Methamphetamine Dependence.

Methamphetamine (MA) is a prevalently abused psychostimulant in the world. Previously published studies and case reports indicated potential associations between MA and body mass index (BMI) and cardiovascular factors (eg, blood pressure and fasting blood glucose). However, these associations have not been studied clearly. This study aimed to investigate BMI and cardiovascular factors in the MA-dependent patients.A total of 1019 MA-dependent patients were recruited between February 2, 2008 and March 11, 2013. A case report was used to gather information on sociocharacteristics and drug-depende

Do drug seizures predict drug-related emergency department presentations or arrests for drug use and possession?

BACKGROUND: Direct evidence of the effect of drug seizures on drug use and drug-related harm is fairly sparse. The aim of this study was to see whether seizures of heroin, cocaine and ATS predict the number of people arrested for use and possession of these drugs and the number overdosing on them. METHOD: We examined the effect of seizure frequency and seizure weight on arrests for drug use and possession and on the frequency of drug overdose with autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models. Granger causality tests were used to test for simultaneity. RESULTS: Over the short term (i.e. up to

Comparative rates of violent crime among regular methamphetamine and opioid users: offending and victimization.

AIMS: To determine the comparative levels of violent offending and victimization among regular methamphetamine and heroin users. DESIGN: Cross-sectional Setting Sydney, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 400 regular methamphetamine (METH) and heroin (HER) users (118 methamphetamine users: METH; 161 regular heroin users: HER; 121 regular users of both: BOTH). FINDINGS: Eighty-two per cent reported a life-time history of committing violent crime, 41% in the past 12 months. There were no group differences in life-time violence, but the METH group were significantly more likely than the HER gr

Repeated methamphetamine treatment increases expression of TRPV1 mRNA in the frontal cortex but not in the striatum or hippocampus of mice.

The transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 (TRPV1) is a non-selective ligand-gated cationic channel. The distribution of TRPV1 mRNA in various regions of the brain has been successfully established. Methamphetamine (MAP) is a psychostimulant and a major drug of abuse in many parts of the world. The powerful rewarding properties of MAP are attributed to multiple pharmacological actions, but the mechanistic association between TRPV1 expression and MAP-induced drug addiction has not established. In the present study, we conducted a time-course analysis of TRPV1 mRNA levels in the frontal c

Determination of phenmetrazine in urine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after liquid-liquid extraction and derivatization with perfluorooctanoyl chloride.

Phenmetrazine is a central nervous system stimulant and is currently used as an anorectic agent. The drug is abused and reported to cause death from overdose. We describe a liquid-liquid extraction protocol for phenmetrazine from urine using 1-chlorobutane and subsequent derivatization using perfluorooctanoyl chloride for gas chromatography-mass spectrometric confirmation. Quantitation of urinary phenmetrazine can be easily achieved by using N-propylamphetamine as an internal standard. The perfluorooctanoyl derivative of phenmetrazine showed a weak molecular ion at m/z 573 and a characteristic

Sympathomimetic drug abuse masking an endogenous hyperadrenergic state, Graves' disease.

Sympathomimetic drug use or abuse in a thyrotoxic individual can be clinically devastating as a result of enhanced cellular sensitivity to adrenergic stimulation. Thus, it is critical to recognize thyrotoxicosis in a patient with coexistent sympathomimetic drug abuse. This case report describes a patient with Graves' disease and severe hyperadrenergic symptomatology that was thought to result from sympathomimetic drug abuse.

Comparison of behavior maintained by infusions of eight phenylethylamines in baboons.

Doses of eight phenylethylamines were substituted for cocaine on a drug-maintained behavior baseline in baboons. Intravenous infusions of drug were contingent upon completion of 160 lever presses (a 160-response fixed-ratio schedule; FR 160). A 3-h time-out period followed each infusion, permitting a maximum of 8 infusions per day. Fenfluramine was the only drug that did not maintain self-infusion performance at any dose tested. d-Amphetamine was approximately 10 times more potent than phentermine, phenmetrazine or diethylpropion, and 20 to 30 times more potent than methylenedioxyamphetamine (

Predictors of persistent psychotic symptoms in persons with methamphetamine abuse receiving psychiatric treatment.

The objective of this study was to identify predictors of sustained psychotic symptoms after methamphetamine (MA) abuse during the course of 6 months from patterns of MA and other substance use, depressive symptoms, family history of psychosis, antisocial personality disorder, and trauma history. A total of 295 individuals with MA abuse and psychotic symptoms seeking psychiatric services were assessed at baseline and then monthly on symptoms and substance use for 6 months. Trajectory analyses revealed two trajectories of the individuals with positive symptoms, with one group presenting with pe

Negative priming in amphetamine psychosis.

Amphetamine abuse may lead to a psychotic state, its symptomatology being very similar to what is seen in paranoid schizophrenia. Failure of attentional inhibition of irrelevant information is thought to be associated with the psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia. Negative priming (NP) paradigm is believed to measure this impairment. Several studies have shown impaired NP in schizophrenia. In the present study a spatial NP task was used to assess attentional inhibition in a group of amphetamine-induced psychosis patients. Nineteen patients with amphetamine-induced psychotic disorder and 20 heal

Mapping a psychosocial syndemic among methamphetamine-using sexual minority men living with HIV.

INTRODUCTION: While research with sexual minority men (SMM) has focused on disparities related to HIV, substance use and mental health, synergistic psychosocial pathways driving these epidemics remain underexplored. We used syndemic theory to assess how psychosocial factors sustain methamphetamine use and hinder recovery efforts for SMM living with HIV. METHODS: A triangulation of network analyses and constructivist grounded theory approaches is utilised to elucidate pathways through which psychosocial factors influence methamphetamine use among this population. Survey data (N = 129) are used

Methamphetamine-induced vascular changes lead to striatal hypoxia and dopamine reduction.

Methamphetamine (meth) is a potent psychostimulant known to cause neurotoxicity. Clinical reports suggest meth abuse is a risk factor for Parkinson's disease. We investigated changes in the blood-brain barrier and cerebral vasculature as a mechanism underlying this risk in rats treated acutely and trained to self-administer meth. We observed blood-brain barrier leakage in rats treated acutely with meth. Hypoperfusion in the striatum was detected with acute and chronic meth treatment and was associated with hypoxia. This was correlated with reductions in striatal tyrosine hydroxylase in rats tr
