[Anatomy of the petrous portion of the temporal bone].

The petrous portion of the temporal bone is a complex bony structure of the skull base that contains key components of the middle and inner ear as well as essential neurovascular elements. Due to its anatomical location and structural characteristics, it is frequently affected by traumatic, inflammatory, or neoplastic conditions. In addition to the clinical articles in this issue, this review provides a concise overview of the clinically relevant anatomy of the petrous portion, with an emphasis on radiological imaging.

Anatomy and Immunohistochemistry of Woodpecker Tail Muscles.

Woodpeckers (Order Piciformes) belong to a group of birds characterized by their hammering capabilities in which the bill is utilized as a tool to probe for food and to excavate nest cavities. They have numerous specializations for this behavior, including their bill and tongue, feet for gripping vertical tree trunks, and tail feathers with thickened shafts to provide stability as a postural appendage. We hypothesized that (1) woodpecker tail musculature is also modified for clinging behaviors with a heterogeneous distribution of fast and slow muscle fibers, and that (2) the tree-trunk foragin

Review of respiratory anatomy adaptations in whales.

Whales (cetaceans, including dolphins and porpoises) are superbly adapted to life in water, but retain vestiges of their terrestrial ancestry, particularly the need to breathe air. Their respiratory tract exhibits many differences from their closest relatives, the terrestrial artiodactyls (even toed ungulates). In this review, we describe the anatomy of cetacean respiratory adaptions. These include protective features (e.g., preventing water incursions during breathing or swallowing, mitigating effects of pressure changes during diving/ascent) and unique functions (e.g., underwater sound produ…

CT and MR anatomy of the larynx and hypopharynx.

Imaging of the larynx and hypopharynx is frequently requested to assess the extent of neoplasms beyond the field of view of endoscopic evaluation. The combination of optical and cross-sectional imaging allows tumors to be classified according to AJCC/UICC guidelines. A thorough understanding of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal anatomy is crucial to guide the radiological eye along the possible pathways of the spread of diseases and to guide differential diagnoses. Computed tomography (CT) has been the first cross-sectional imaging technique used to evaluate the larynx and hypopharynx; its spatial …

Anatomy of the Achilles tendon-A pictorial review.

The Achilles tendon (AT) is the strongest tendon of the human body. The knowledge of AT anatomy is a basic prerequisite for the successful treatment of acute and chronic lesions. The structure of the AT results from a complicated fusion of three parts: the tendons of the medial and lateral gastrocnemius and the soleus muscles. From proximal to distal, the tendon fibers twist in a long spiral into a roughly 90° internal rotation. The tendon is narrowest approximately 5-7 cm above its calcaneal insertion and from there it expands again. The topography of the footprints of the individual AT compo…

[Pathogenesis and pathological anatomy of chlamydial infections].

The review presents modern view on the global problem of chlamydial infections. Current nomenclature of chlamydiae was adduced. Epidemiology, etiology, clinical features, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of chlamydiosis received full coverage. The potential involvement of chlamydiae in the progression of various infectious and somatic diseases was revealed. Special attention was paid to pathomorphological alterations in human tissues, which develop during primary infection with chlamydia as well as during chronic infection. Key problems were demonstrated: underestimation of prevalence of

Clinical anatomy of the precuneus and pathogenesis of the schizophrenia.

Recent evidence has shown that the precuneus plays a role in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. The precuneus is a structure of the parietal lobe's medial and posterior cortex, representing a central hub involved in multimodal integration processes. Although neglected for several years, the precuneus is highly complex and crucial for multimodal integration. It has extensive connections with different cerebral areas and is an interface between external stimuli and internal representations. In human evolution, the precuneus has increased in size and complexity, allowing the development of higher

The carotid sheath: Anatomy and clinical considerations.

OBJECTIVES: The distinctive bilateral carotid sheaths (CS) reside in the neck region and form part of the deep cervical fasciae. Aspects of the CS anatomy are controversial, most notably its specific attachment sites and fascial makeup, which are key determinants for the spread of tumours and infections and surgical planning. This review aimed to organise the pertinent aspects relating to CS anatomy and pathology, explore their clinical relevance and highlight areas of disagreement in the literature. METHODS: A narrative review identified key papers relating to CS anatomy, histology, embryolo…

Labial Anatomy Concerns in the Adolescent: A Review.

Labial size concerns are an increasingly common chief complaint by both adolescents and adults despite studies showing a wide variation in sizes of the labia minora in the prepubertal, adolescent, and adult population. A thorough history will elucidate what or whom is driving the concerns, which can then direct management. Educating the patient, caregiver, and referring physician is often all that is needed. Surgery should never be used for cosmetic reasons in a minor.

Anatomy of the Female Koala Reproductive Tract.

The koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), while being an iconic Australian marsupial, has recently been listed as endangered. To establish an improved understanding of normal reproductive anatomy, this paper brings together unpublished research which has approached the topic from two perspectives: (1) the establishment of an artificial insemination program, and (2) the definition of Chlamydia spp.-derived histopathological changes of the female koala urogenital system. Based on the presentation and histological processing of over 70 opportunistic specimens, recovered from wildlife hospitals in South…

Anatomy and evaluation of the optic nerve head.

Evaluation of the optic disc is important for the correct diagnosis and follow-up of optic neuropathies, especially glaucoma. The characteristics of the optic disc depend on various factors, including demographic and population aspects, and analysis of these characteristics may vary according to the methods used. The size and format of the neural rim along with the nerve fiber layer are important to the clinician's judgment regarding the susceptibility of the subject to develop glaucoma. In this study, we reviewed the literature to summarize the main methods and its characteristics in the eval

[Relevant anatomy of epicardial space for the electrophysiologists].

The arrhythmogenic substrate in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic dysplasia, postmyocarditis nonischemic dilative cardiomyopathy as well as after extensive posterior or anterior wall myocardial infarction is predominantly located epicardially. This can necessitate epicardial access for an effective, substrate-based catheter ablation of the ventricular tachycardia (VT). Anterior percutaneous epicardial puncture represents the standard approach for epicardial VT ablation. The most important anatomical particularities that must be taken into account when performing an epicardial

Revisiting the Anatomy of the Left Ventricular Summit.

The left ventricular summit corresponds to the epicardial side of the basal superior free wall, extending from the base of the left coronary aortic sinus. The summit composes the floor of the compartment surrounded by the aortic root, infundibulum, pulmonary root, and left atrial appendage. The compartment is filled with thick adipose tissue, carrying the coronary vessels. Thus, the treatment of ventricular tachycardia originating from the summit is challenging, and three-dimensional understanding of this complicated region is fundamental. We revisit the clinical anatomy of the left ventricula…

Anatomy of the anterolateral ligament of the knee joint.

Despite remarkable improvements in clinical outcomes after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, the residual rotational instability of knee joints remains a major concern. The anterolateral ligament (ALL) has recently gained attention as a distinct ligamentous structure on the anterolateral aspect of the knee joint. Numerous studies investigated the anatomy, function, and biomechanics of ALL to establish its potential role as a stabilizer for anterolateral rotational instability. However, controversies regarding its existence, prevalence, and femoral and tibial insertions need to be addr…

Embryology and anatomy of congenital diaphragmatic hernia.

Prenatal and postnatal treatment modalities for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) continue to improve, however patients still face high rates of morbidity and mortality caused by severe underlying persistent pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary hypoplasia. Though the majority of CDH cases are idiopathic, it is believed that CDH is a polygenic developmental defect caused by interactions between candidate genes, as well as environmental and epigenetic factors. However, the origin and pathogenesis of these developmental insults are poorly understood. Further, connections between disrupted lun

The Spring Ligament Complex-Anatomy and Function.

This article provides an overview of the soft tissue contributions to the normal structures that surround the talo-calcaneal-navicular (TCN) joint of the human arch. The TCN joint has a multiplanar range of motion that makes it essential to the kinetic coupling that links the forefoot and hindfoot. The soft tissue connection surrounding this joint is known as the spring ligament complex. More accurate knowledge of the anatomy of this complex will enhance the understanding of its role in the support of the head of the talus and, potentially, its critical interactions with the normal or abnormal…
