Developmental Vitamin D Deficiency Produces Behavioral Phenotypes of Relevance to Autism in an Animal Model.

Emerging evidence suggests that gestational or developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency is associated with an increased risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in social interaction, lack of verbal and non-verbal communications, stereotyped repetitive behaviors and hyper-activities. There are several other clinical features that are commonly comorbid with ASD, including olfactory impairments, anxiety and delays in motor development. Here we investigate these features in an animal model related to ASD-the DVD-deficient rat. Compa

Emerging zoonoses: the "one health approach".

Zoonoses represent a public health risk recently pointed out by the spreading of previously unknown human infectious diseases emerging from animal reservoirs such as severe acute respiratory syndrome and avian influenza caused by H5N1-virus. These outbreaks have shown that animal breeding activities can pose a significant public health risk. Until now, the risk of zoonoses has probably been underestimated, particularly in occupational settings. The emergence or re-emergence of bacterial (Mycobacterium bovis and Brucella spp) or viral (hepatitis E virus) infections shows that zoonoses should be

Microbial forensics for natural and intentional incidents of infectious disease involving animals.

Microbial forensics is a relatively new scientific discipline dedicated to analysing microbiological evidence from a crime for attribution purposes. It builds on traditional microbiology and epidemiology but within a legal framework. Important motives for forensic investigations include interdiction of criminals, prosecution of justice, and ideally, deterrence of others from committing similar acts. Forensic capabilities in animal health should focus on building capacity for detection and reporting of increases in infectious disease morbidity and mortality among animals that might reflect a co

Exploring potential risk pathways with high risk groups for urban Rift Valley fever virus introduction, transmission, and persistence in two urban centers of Kenya.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is a zoonotic arbovirus that has profound impact on domestic ruminants and can also be transmitted to humans via infected animal secretions. Urban areas in endemic regions across Africa have susceptible animal and human hosts, dense vector distributions, and source livestock (often from high risk locations to meet the demand for animal protein). Yet, there has never been a documented urban outbreak of RVF. To understand the likely risk of RVFV introduction to urban communities from their perspective and guide future initiatives, we conducted focus group discussio

Auditory sensitivity in aquatic animals.

A critical concern with respect to marine animal acoustics is the issue of hearing "sensitivity," as it is widely used as a criterion for the onset of noise-induced effects. Important aspects of research on sensitivity to sound by marine animals include: uncertainties regarding how well these species detect and respond to different sounds; the masking effects of man-made sounds on the detection of biologically important sounds; the question how internal state, motivation, context, and previous experience affect their behavioral responses; and the long-term and cumulative effects of sound expos

Zoonoses likely to be used in bioterrorism.

Bioterrorism is the deliberate release of viruses, bacteria, or other agents used "to cause illness or death in people, animals, or plants. Only modest microbiologic skills are needed to produce and effectively use biologic weapons. And biological warfare has afflicted campaigns throughout military history, at times playing an important role in determining their outcomes. There is a long list of potential pathogens for use by terrorists, but only a few are easy to prepare and disperse. Of the infectious diseases, the vast majority are zoonoses. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's

Pure animal phobia is more specific than other specific phobias: epidemiological evidence from the Zurich Study, the ZInEP and the PsyCoLaus.

Interest in subtypes of mental disorders is growing in parallel with continuing research progress in psychiatry. The aim of this study was to examine pure animal phobia in contrast to other specific phobias and a mixed subtype. Data from three representative Swiss community samples were analysed: PsyCoLaus (n = 3720), the ZInEP Epidemiology Survey (n = 1500) and the Zurich Study (n = 591). Pure animal phobia and mixed animal/other specific phobias consistently displayed a low age at onset of first symptoms (8-12 years) and clear preponderance of females (OR > 3). Meanwhile, other specific phob

Genome editing and genetic engineering in livestock for advancing agricultural and biomedical applications.

Genetic modification of livestock has a longstanding and successful history, starting with domestication several thousand years ago. Modern animal breeding strategies predominantly based on marker-assisted and genomic selection, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer have led to significant improvement in the performance of domestic animals, and are the basis for regular supply of high quality animal derived food. However, the current strategy of breeding animals over multiple generations to introduce novel traits is not realistic in responding to the unprecedented challenges such as cha

A Step Too Far? Public Perceptions on Navigating the Introduction of Robot Technologies into the Human-Animal Relationship in Agriculture.

Robots are being developed to perform the day-to-day operational tasks of animal agriculture, affecting the way in which humans and farm animals interact. There is the prospect of automation increasing to the point where humans would hardly set foot on farms, which, aside from the consumption of animal-based products, could entirely disconnect humans and farmed animals from each other. Yet the literature on public attitudes towards the introduction of agricultural robots into the human-animal relationship is sparse. Here, we consider the public acceptability of introducing robots into the huma

Best Practices in the Development and Use of Experimental Models of Bacterial Pneumonia: An Official American Thoracic Society Workshop Report.

The global incidence of respiratory infectious diseases caused by bacteria continues to increase, with acute lower respiratory tract infections contributing to significant morbidity and mortality. Preclinical models designed to investigate such respiratory bacterial diseases are of utmost importance to decipher their pathogenesis and develop novel targets for intervention and treatment. Animal models offer the powerful ability to investigate different pneumonia types at varying stages of infection and disease. However, the same models can promote important variations in outcome, potentially co

Responsible innovation in multi-organ-on-a-chip research: A qualitative study of biomedical scientists' views on the value and development of models for obesity.

Obesity is a global health issue and risk factor for various diseases. Given its systemic nature, multi-organ-on-a-chip (MOC) models have been proposed to model human organ interactions in vitro. Obesity MOC models are still in an early stage of development. Early stakeholder engagement may provide insights into societal, scientific, and ethical aspects of obesity MOC models, and incorporating these dimensions can support their development and implementation. Therefore, we conducted an explorative qualitative study focusing on academic and industrial biomedical researchers' views on MOC models

Core2Edge: a human glioblastoma organoid-brain slice model capturing infiltration and transcriptional heterogeneity from core to single-cell dispersion.

Glioblastomas function as intricate cellular networks that extend into the surrounding brain tissue, facilitating long-distance communication. This malignant connectivity spans from the tumor core to remote infiltration zones, in support of the concept of glioblastoma as a whole-brain disease. With growing ethical concerns in biomedical research and the inherent limitations of animal models in recapitulating human glioblastoma biology, there is an increasing demand for human ex vivo platforms capable of capturing the full infiltration spectrum from the tumor core to single-cell dispersion. Impact of the FDA roadmap and perspectives for regulatory use of new approach methodologies in Japanese pharmaceutical companies.

Pharmaceutical scientists develop and apply increasingly complex technologies from an expanding toolbox to create more effective and safer drugs. Consequently, the increasing human specificity of new modalities has highlighted the limitations of conventional animal studies. Recently, new approach methodologies (NAMs) have attracted attention for their potential to promote the 3Rs and human-relevant evaluation in pharmaceutical research and development, and have been applied not only in early discovery research but also in regulatory review. In April 2025, the US Food and Drug Administration re

Curcumin modulates the function of SPP1+ macrophages via NF-κB signaling to alleviate endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a complex gynecological disorder with prominent cellular heterogeneity, and its key pathogenic cell subsets and core molecular mechanisms remain elusive, which restricts the development of effective therapeutic strategies. In this study, we constructed a single-cell atlas of endometriotic lesions via single-cell RNA sequencing, combined with multi-omics analysis, cell-cell communication mining, functional validation and animal experiments. We identified SPP1+ macrophages as the key pathogenic macrophage subset in endometriosis, and uncovered its core mechanism of action: SPP1+

Tell Your Story: Strengthening Scientific Engagement and Welfare Leadership among Animal Technologists.

BACKGROUND: Animal Technologists (ATs) are vital in the scientific community, offering crucial expertise in animal care, welfare, and experimental procedures. As projects become more complex, there is an increasing opportunity for ATs to engage actively in scientific projects, decision-making, and collaborative research processes. Unfortunately, many ATs may feel that their professional background is insufficient or may not consistently recognise the significant scientific value of their daily activities. These perceptions can result in missed opportunities for personal and professional growth

Xenotransplantation: Current Understanding of the Mechanism of Immune-Mediated Injury.

The scarcity of transplantable organs represents a worldwide public health crisis, and as a result, thousands of people with kidney failure die waiting for a transplant each year. Xenotransplantation involves transplanting organs from an animal source into humans, offering a potential solution to this significant unmet need. Indeed, if there is a limitless supply of organs, many more patients who do not meet the current criteria for transplant eligibility could also be considered as candidates. Although there are examples of attempts to transplant animal tissues or organs into humans dating ba
