Hierarchically Organized and Anisotropic Porous Carbon Monoliths.

Anisotropy is a key factor regarding mechanical or transport properties and thus the functionality of porous materials. However, the ability to deliberately design the pore structure of hierarchically organized porous networks toward anisotropic features is limited. Here, we report two straightforward routes toward hierarchically structured porous carbon monoliths with an anisotropic alignment of the microstructure on the level of macro- and mesopores. One approach is based on nanocasting (NC) of carbon precursors into hierarchical and anisotropic silica hard templates. The second route, a dir…

Regional biomechanical and histological characterization of the mitral valve apparatus: Implications for mitral repair strategies.

The aim of this study was to investigate the regional and directional differences in the biomechanics and histoarchitecture of the porcine mitral valve (MV) apparatus, with a view to tailoring tissue-engineered constructs for MV repair. The anterior leaflet displayed the largest directional anisotropy with significantly higher strength in the circumferential direction compared to the posterior leaflet. The histological results indicated that this was due to the circumferential alignment of the collagen fibers. The posterior leaflet demonstrated no significant directional anisotropy in the mech…

Diffusion tensor quantification and cognitive correlates of the macrostructure and microstructure of the corpus callosum in typically developing and dyslexic children.

Noninvasive quantitative MRI methods, such as diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), can offer insights into the structure-function relationships in human developmental brain disorders. In this article, we quantified the macrostructural and microstructural attributes of the corpus callosum (CC) in children with dyslexia and in typically developing readers of comparable age and gender. Diffusion anisotropy, and mean, radial and axial diffusivities of cross-sectional CC subregions were computed using a validated DTI methodology. The normalized posterior CC area was enlarged in children with dyslexia re…

Diffusion-tensor imaging in septo-optic dysplasia.

One of the morphological correlates of septo-optic dysplasia is hypoplasia of the optic nerves. As of now, it remains unknown, in how far this disorder also affects the organization of the optic radiation. Using diffusion-tensor imaging (DTI), the non-invasive evaluation of large fiber tracts including the optic radiation has become possible. We have compared DTI-data from a patient suffering from septo-optic dysplasia with those of a group of eleven healthy control subjects. The anisotropy showed statistically significant reduction in the patient with septo-optic dysplasia within the visual f…

Combined functional magnetic resonance imaging and diffusion tensor imaging demonstrate widespread modified organisation in malformation of cortical development.

A patient with a mild left hemiparesis and a malformation of cortical development in the right hemisphere was investigated with fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) and DTI (diffusion tensor imaging). The motor cortex was studied using a finger tapping fMRI experiment. The fibre orientation was studied by displaying the principal eigenvector of the diffusion tensor in the spatially normalised brain of the patient and of control subjects. In addition, the anisotropy (directionality) of water diffusion of the patient was statistically compared with control subjects. The malformation was …

First-principles study of d0 magnetism in a SnI2 monolayer induced by P and As impurities.

Searching for d0 magnetism in two-dimensional materials has attracted great attention because of its importance for next-generation spintron … the impurity. In addition, the emergence of magnetic semiconducting behavior and in-plane magnetic anisotropy (IMA) is also confirmed. The study of spin coupling in pnictogen-doped SnI2 systems demonstrates the effectiveness of X-X separation for controlling the electronic and magnetic properties. Specifically, an antiferromagnetic semiconducting nature is …

Effects of confining pressure and loading direction on the mechanical behavior of schist with high content and aggregation degree of mica.

This article focuses on the mechanical anisotropy of the schist with high content and aggregation degree of mica, which are prone to causing local collapse, large deformation, and support failure in tunnel engineering. The fabric characteristics of rock and the response of mechanical properties to confining pressure and loading direction was emphatically explored by micro tests and compression tests with confining pressures ranging from 0 to 20 MPa. Micro tests reveal that the flaky micas are highly aggregated and directionally arranged in the "matrix" composed of granular minerals and directi…

Comparison of post-stroke white matter assessment using disconnectome-symptom mapping versus quantitative diffusion MRI.

Indirect structural disconnection-symptom mapping allows white matter impairment to be determined without the need for multi-directional diffusion (MDDW) imaging for each individual. Although widely used this method has not been validated. We analyzed a multicenter dataset obtained from 166 individuals in the chronic stage after stroke with upper limb impairment quantified with Fugl-Meyer upper extremity score (FMUE) comprising stroke lesion maps and MDDW imaging. White matter integrity was quantified (1) by diffusion-tensor-imaging-based fractional anisotropy in preselected tracts (fractional…

Structural correlates of the audiological and emotional components of chronic tinnitus.

The objective is to investigate white matter tracts, more specifically the arcuate fasciculus and acoustic radiation, in tinnitus and assess their relationship with distress, loudness and hearing loss. DTI images were acquired for 58 tinnitus patients and 65 control subjects. Deterministic tractography was first performed to visualize the arcuate fasciculus and acoustic radiation tracts bilaterally and to calculate tract density, fractional anisotropy, radial diffusivity, and axial diffusivity for tinnitus and control subjects. Tinnitus patients had a significantly reduced tract density compar…

Large Interband-Driven Anisotropic Gilbert Damping of a Few Atomic Layers of Fe in Contact with MgO.

Magnetization control in spintronic devices is governed by the Gilbert damping constant, which describes the energy dissipation in magnetization dynamics. Although Gilbert damping is often treated as an isotropic scalar, crystalline symmetry can induce orientational damping anisotropy. This anisotropy is commonly attributed to intraband scattering associated with changes in the electronic density of states, whereas interband scattering has generally been assumed to be isotropic. Here, we show that the anisotropic Gilbert damping of a few atomic layers of Fe in contact with MgO is governed by i…

Chaotic magnetization dynamics in magnetic Duffing oscillator.

We propose a magnetic analogy of the Duffing oscillator-magnetic Duffing oscillator-which is characterized by a double-well magnetic potential of a ferromagnet with a uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Based on the linear stability analysis of the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation, we show that an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the magnetic anisotropy field creates an anharmonicity on the magnetic potential, generating homoclinic orbits in the phase space. By evaluating the Lyapunov exponent, we demonstrate that the magnetic Duffing oscillator exhibits chaotic behaviors in the pres…

Revealing the anisotropic phonon behaviours of layered SnS by angle/temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy.

Tin sulfide (SnS), a IV-VI group layered compound, has attracted much attention because of its excellent thermoelectric properties along the crystallographic b-axis. However, there are few reports on the identification of its in-plane orientation. We observe a strong anisotropy of the in-plane Raman signal in bulk SnS. With the help of ab initio calculations, the vibrational symmetry of each observed Raman mode in the cleaved (00l)-plane is consistent with the experimental values. The angle-resolved polarized Raman spectroscopy, combined with electron backscattered diffraction technology, is u…

Quantitative comparison of the hemodynamic activation elicited by cardinal and oblique gratings with functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

Evidence has been accumulated for over a century indicating that the visual system of humans and many animals is more sensitive to contour stimulation at vertical or horizontal orientations than oblique orientations. However, the neural basis for this orientation anisotropy is still a subject of debate. In the present study, we recorded brain activity over the parietal-occipital and frontal lobes with functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) when human participants were presented with gratings in different orientations. The oblique gratings induced a much larger change in the oxygenated h…
