A free-living European red deer calf (Cervus elaphus) was euthanized due to bilateral microphthalmia. Lens was missing, replaced by proliferating squamous epithelial cells; hyperplastic squamous cells, sebaceous and mucinous glands were observed within the cornea with the characteristics of inclusion cyst. Findings were consistent with congenital microphthalmia/aphakia, with multiple eye abnormalities.

This study compared the visual outcomes and complications between sutureless scleral-fixated intraocular lens and iris claw intraocular lens implantation in aphakia without adequate capsule and/or zonule support. Studies comparing the clinical outcomes of scleral-fixated intraocular lens and iris claw intraocular lens implantation published until April 2022 were retrieved from the PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases. The outcomes included postoperative final visual acuity, surgical time, surgery-induced astigmatism, and complications. The weighted mean difference and…

Refractive correction of aphakia in childhood can be a complex management issue following lensectomy for congenital cataract or ectopia lentis. Some children have inadequate capsular support to allow an 'in the bag' or sulcus fixated intra-ocular lens (IOL). In such cases, options for refractive correction include spectacles, contact lenses, or surgically fixed IOLs. Many methods of IOL fixation have been described, but none are widely adopted in children. In recent years, the iris-fixated Artisan Aphakic IOL has gained popularity, but there is still significant concern about the rate of corne…

Disorders of the basal ganglia such as Parkinson's disease (PD) and Huntington's disease are commonly thought of primarily as motor disorders; however, the cognitive symptoms of these diseases such as executive dysfunction, learning, memory and attention deficits are prominent and often more disabling than the hallmark motor symptoms. Cognitive features of PD are often neglected in preclinical studies of PD, likely due to the lack of available animal models to study them. Aphakia mice, which are deficient in the transcription factor Pitx3, model the selective nigrostriatal DA loss in PD. Here …
