A high index of clinical suspicion; careful culturing of samples from blood, endocervix, urethra, pharynx, skin, synovial fluid and tissue, and rectum; and appropriate antibiotic therapy will rapidly control and prevent more serious complications of disseminated gonococcal infection.

Several disease have been associated with hepatitis C virus infections, including rheumatologic, hematologic and neoplastic disorders. We report two women, aged 57 and 39 years old whom the initial presentation of hepatitis C virus infection was an arthritis resembling rheumatoid arthritis. Laboratory work up revealed abnormal liver function tests, stimulating the search for hepatitis C virus infection, having both patients positive ELISA tests. Detection of this agent is extremely important when selecting a therapy for the articular disease, since several drugs used in the treatment of rheuma

Septic arthritis is usually seen in children as an acute febrile illness induced by septicemia, local inoculation of a joint caused by trauma or adjacent osteomyelitis. It also occurs in adults particulary those with debilitating disease or sepsis at other sites. It normally happens in knee joints, but rarely in hip joints. A 65-year-old patient suffered from hip pain and febrile episodes intermittently for two months. Diagnostic hip aspiration was performed with 60 ml pus drained. The aspirate grew Staphylococcus aureus. Hip arthrotomy was performed with extensive debridement. Eighteen months

Salmonellosis is one of the most frequent serious infections in sickle cell patients and remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. Capillary occlusion secondary to intravascular sickling may devitalize and infarct the gut, permitting Salmonella invasion. Reduced function of the liver and spleen, together with interference with reticuloendothelial system function due to erythrophagocytosis, suppresses clearing of these organisms from the blood stream. Abnormal opsonizing and complement function probably also play a role. The expanded bone marrow with sluggish fl

We describe a case of arthropathy due to rubella reinfection. Clinical rubella reinfection with rash and lymphadenopathy has been reported but as far as we are aware this is the first report of a case with arthropathy as the sole presentation. Rubella IgG subclass and avidity tests confirmed the reinfection.

Bilharzial was experimentally induced in Swiss albino mice in order to study the histopathological changes in the TMJ in case of Bilharzial infection. The bony components of the joint showed massive chronic inflammatory cell infiltration. The articular disk (meniscus) showed thickening and hyperplastic changes with narrowing of the joint space. The articulating surfaces showed erosions and irregularity. It was concluded that Bilharziasis can cause arthropathy of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).

Fifty dairy goats, of various ages, sexes and breeds were selected for examination on the basis of positive serological reactions to caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus (CAEV). Thirty-one had lung lesions including chronic interstitial pneumonia of caudal or cranioventral lobes, bronchopneumonia, verminous pneumonia, pulmonary cryptococcosis or combinations of these. The only infective agent recovered from all the chronic interstitial pneumonia cases examined was CAEV, which was also recovered from lung tissue of 3 goats with arthritis but no lung lesions. The presence of CAEV in lavaged alve

Significant changes have taken place in the epidemiology, microbiology and antibiotic therapy of bone and joint infections. Gram-negative bacilli have become an increasingly common cause, particularly in immunocompromised patients; anaerobes have been implicated in osteomyelitis associated with metallic foreign bodies; and there is increasing use of oral antibiotic regimens following an initial period of parenteral treatment. Gram-negative bacilli and anaerobes are found in polymicrobial non-haematogenous osteomyelitis (e.g. post-traumatic, post-surgical), but Staphylococcus aureus remains the
