Biological control strategies are increasingly being explored as sustainable alternatives for managing rice blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae. In this study, we characterized three Bacillus pumilus isolates (DC01, DC09, and DC13) and evaluated their antifungal and plant-beneficial properties against M. oryzae. Whole-genome sequencing revealed multiple biosynthetic gene clusters associated with the production of antimicrobial metabolites. All three isolates inhibited fungal growth in dual-culture assays, whereas heat-stable diffusible antifungal activity was primarily associated with t

The development of nanopesticides with minimized carriers (NMCs) through prodrug design and molecular self-assembly represents a transformative strategy for enhancing pesticide utilization efficiency and addressing global food security challenges. As a proof of concept, we developed A12@DES, a water-based nanodelivery system that combines a target-specific pesticide with a deep eutectic solvent (DES). The system utilizes a laccase inhibitor (A12, structurally optimized from lead compound PMDD-5Y) to self-assemble into monodisperse nanospheres (∼160 nm diameter) with an alkaline phosphatase (AL

Chestnut brown rot, caused by Gnomoniopsis smithogilvyi (syn. Gnomoniopsis castanea) (Gnomoniaceae, Diaporthales, Ascomycota), is a major threat to global chestnut production due to its latent infections and post-harvest symptom expression. This study investigated the role of temperature in pathogen biology and post-harvest disease development during storage. Mycelial growth and sporulation were optimal at 25 °C but, although reduced at extreme temperatures, they were not completely inhibited. Post-infection assays demonstrated that pathogen activation during storage is strongly influenced by …

A Japanese man in his 70s presented with multiple blackish-brown papules on the nasal wing region, which had appeared 3 months prior to his initial visit. He was initially treated at a local clinic with clindamycin phosphate gel, but showed poor improvement. Subsequently, he visited our hospital for further evaluation. A skin biopsy was performed, granulomas consisting of histiocytes were observed in the tissue, and spore-like brown cells were observed sporadically within the granulomas. Fungal culture of biopsy tissue showed the development of black villiform colonies. Molecular biological id

Stephanoascus ciferrii, a conditional pathogenic fungus prevalent in nature, is more frequently encountered in patients with compromised immunity. However, the literature rarely reports infections caused by Stephanoascus ciferrii in peritoneal dialysis patients. Here, we detail the case of a 66-year-old female suffering from renal failure who experienced catheter-related infection during peritoneal dialysis. Dialysate turbidity prompted the detection of Stephanoascus ciferrii in both peritoneal dialysate and tubes through microbiological cultures. Subsequent treatment involved antifungal drugs

Sclerotinia stem rot caused by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is one of the most serious diseases of oilseed rape. Chemical control is an important method to control this disease, however, development of fungal resistance to commonly used fungicides has led to severe yield losses in recent years. Therefore, development of novel fungicides against S. sclerotiorum is urgently needed. Glabridin is one of the major flavonoids in Glycyrrhiza L. plants, and we previously found that it is very effective against S. sclerotiorum. Nevertheless, the baseline sensitivity and resistance risk of S. sclerotiorum t

Didymella macrostoma P2 was isolated from rapeseed (Brassica napus), and it is an endophyte of rapeseed and an antagonist of three rapeseed pathogens, Botrytis cinerea, Leptosphaeria biglobosa, and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum. However, whether P2 has a suppressive effect on infection of rapeseed by the clubroot pathogen Plasmodiophora brassicae remains unknown. This study was conducted to detect production of antimicrobials by P2 and to determine the efficacy of the antimicrobials and P2 pycnidiospores in suppression of rapeseed clubroot. The results showed that cultural filtrates (CFs) of P2 in

Pseudodiploöspora longispora (previously known as Diploöspora longispora) is a pathogenic fungus of Morchella mushrooms. The molecular mechanism underlying the infection of P. longispora in fruiting bodies remains unknown. In this study, three known peptaibols, alamethicin F-50, polysporin B, and septocylindrin B (1-3), and a new analogue, longisporin A (4), were detected and identified in the culture of P. longispora and the fruiting bodies of M. sextelata infected by P. longispora. The primary amino sequence of longisporin A is defined as Ac-Aib1-Pro2-Aib3-Ala4-Aib5-Aib6-Gln7-Aib8-Val9-Aib10

Bark beetles vector symbiotic fungal species into their host trees during mass attacks. The symbiotic relationship with blue stain fungi of the Ascomycetes, including genera of Endoconidiophora (syn. = Ceratocystis), promotes successful establishment whereby the microbes help to overcome the host trees' defence and degrade toxic resins. This is the first study to evaluate both the volatile emissions from an insect-associated blue stain fungus over time and the insect response in a field trapping experiment. Volatile emissions from isolates of Endoconidiophora rufipennis (ER) were collected by

Chromoblastomycosis is a fungal disease presented with local warty papule, plaque, and verrucous nodules. In addition, the incidence and drug resistance of chromoblastomycosis are increasing each year worldwide. Photodynamic therapy is a promising method to treat mycoses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of new methylene blue (NMB)-induced PDT on multidrug-resistant chromoblastomycosis in vitro. We isolated one wild-type strain pathogen from one clinical patient diagnosed with chromoblastomycosis for over 27 years. The pathogen was identified by histopathology, the morpholo

BACKGROUND: Symbiotic associations of endophytic fungi have been proved by possessing an ability to produce hormones and metabolites for their host plant. Members of the Orchidaceae are obligate mycorrhizal species but a non-mycorrhizal association needs more investigation for their ability to promote plant growth and produce plant growth hormones. In the present study, endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots of Dendrobium longicornu Lindl., to investigate the root colonizing activity and role in plant growth and development.
RESULTS: Among 23 fungal isolates were identified both by mor

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) is a chronic disease caused by several species of dematiaceous fungi. In this study, a regional collection of 45 CBM cases was conducted in Guangdong, China, a hyper-endemic area of CBM. Epidemiology findings indicated that the mean age of cases was 61.38 ± 11.20 years, long duration ranged from 3 months to 30 years, and the gender ratio of male to female was 4.6:1. Thirteen cases (29%) declared underlying diseases. Verrucous form was the most common clinical manifestation (n = 19, 42%). Forty-five corresponding clinical strains were isolated, and 28 of them (62%) wer

Pulse crops such as chickpeas, lentils, and dry peas are grown widely for human and animal consumption. Major yield- and quality-limiting constraints include diseases caused by fungi and oomycetes. The environmental and health concerns of synthetic fungicides used for disease management, emergence of fungicide-resistant pathogens, and demand for organic pulse crop products necessitate the search for effective alternatives. Safe and environmentally friendly plant-derived essential oils (EOs) have been reported effective against some pathogenic fungi. Growth on EO-amended growth medium and an in
