Mortality in individuals with disruptive behavior disorders diagnosed by specialist services - A nationwide cohort study.

Disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), inclusive of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), are associated with outcomes likely to increase risk of mortality. Using Danish National Registers, a total of 1.92 million individuals including 9495 individuals with DBDs diagnosed by specialist services were followed from their first birthday to 2013. Those with and without DBDs were compared using mortality rate ratios (MRRs) estimated using Poisson regression and adjusted for calendar period, age, sex, family history of psychiatric disorders, maternal age at time of birth, pat

The etiology of associations between negative emotionality and childhood externalizing disorders.

Despite consistent documentation of associations between childhood negative emotionality and externalizing psychopathology, few genetically informative studies have investigated the etiology of that association. The goal of the current study was to delineate the etiology of the covariation of negative emotionality and childhood externalizing problems (e.g., oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, inattention, and hyperactivity/impulsivity). Twin families were recruited from Georgia state birth records and completed parental report questionnaires of negative emotionality and common Dia

Early manifestations of restless legs syndrome in childhood and adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the symptomatology reported by a series of children and adolescents who at initial consultation did not meet full diagnostic criteria for pediatric restless legs syndrome (RLS) but subsequently did so over the course of clinical follow-up. METHODS: Retrospective assessment of all patients with pediatric RLS receiving ongoing care in a pediatric sleep/neurology practice at a large multispecialty clinic (n=50). Eighteen children and adolescents who met inclusion and exclusion criteria were identified by chart review. All but one had undergone polysomnography. RESULTS: De

Dispositional Trait Types of ADHD in Young Children.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated a novel person-centered approach to parsing ADHD heterogeneity using dispositional traits. METHOD: Participants were one hundred nine 3- to 6-year-olds, and their primary caregivers and day care providers/teachers who completed a multi-informant diagnostic procedure with longitudinal follow-up. RESULTS: Based on latent profile analysis, young children with ADHD could be divided into low control, high surgency, and high negative affect subgroups. The low control and high surgency groups exhibited increased parent- and teacher-rated hyperactive-impulsive and opp

The Effects of Child Mental Health on Juvenile Criminal Justice Contact and Victimization.

BACKGROUND: There is extensive evidence on the associations between mental disorders such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder (CD), oppositional/defiant disorder (ODD), and anxiety/depression and delinquency among youths. However, research has largely overlooked the potential confounding from comorbidity of these mental disorders as well as unobserved familial heterogeneity. AIMS OF THE STUDY: This study aims to estimate the causal effects of mental health in childhood (age 4-12) on delinquency in adolescence (age 13-18) by adjusting for comorbid mental disord

Empirically Determined, Psychopathological Subtypes in Children With ADHD.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to empirically determine subgroups of ADHD defined by specific patterns of psychopathology. METHOD: A clinical sample of 223 children with ADHD, aged 5 to 14 years, was examined with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). In addition, comorbid psychiatric disorders, psychosocial risk factors, and socioeconomic status were assessed. RESULTS: Cluster analysis of CBCL subscales yielded a solution with four distinct subgroups. While "externalizers" showed a high rate of comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD), "obsessive-compulsiv

Examining the relationships between error-related brain activity (the ERN) and anxiety disorders versus externalizing disorders in young children: Focusing on cognitive control, fear, and shyness.

OBJECTIVE: We examine the relationship between individual differences in temperament (cognitive control, fear, and shyness) and the error-related negativity (i.e., the ERN) in a large sample of young children. Furthermore, we explore to what extent variation in temperament may underlie the associations between the ERN and anxiety disorders versus externalizing disorders. METHOD: Using the Children's Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ), we focus on scales related to cognitive control (attentional focusing, attentional shifting, and inhibitory control) and a fearful/anxious temperament (fearfulness an

Common genetic and nonshared environmental factors contribute to the association between socioemotional dispositions and the externalizing factor in children.

BACKGROUND: Childhood behavioral disorders including conduct disorder (CD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often co-occur. Prior twin research shows that common sets of genetic and environmental factors are associated with these various disorders and they form a latent factor called Externalizing. The developmental propensity model posits that CD develops in part from socioemotional dispositions of prosociality, negative emotionality, and daring; and recent research has supported the expected genetic and environmental associations betwe

Does oppositional defiant disorder have temperament and psychopathological profiles independent of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder?

BACKGROUND: Most studies on temperamental and behavioral/emotional characteristics of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) did not rule out the effect of comorbid attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The main objective of this study was to identify the temperamental and psychopathological patterns of ODD independent of comorbid ADHD. We also aimed to compare the patterns of temperament and psychopathology between ODD with and without ADHD. METHOD: Parents of 2673 students, randomly selected from 19 representative schools in Seoul, Korea, completed the Diagnostic Interview Schedule

Do executive function deficits differentiate between adolescents with ADHD and oppositional defiant/conduct disorder? A neuropsychological study using the Six Elements Test and Hayling Sentence Completion Test.

Two neuropsychological measures of executive functions--Six Elements Tests (SET) and Hayling Sentence Completion Test (HSCT)--were administered to 110 adolescents, aged 12-15 years. Participants comprised four groups: Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) only (n = 35). ADHD and Oppositional Defiant Disorder/Conduct Disorder (ODD/CD) (n = 38), ODD/CD only (n = 11), and a normal community control group (n = 26). Results indicated that adolescents with ADHD performed significantly worse on both the SET and HSCT than those without ADHD, whether or not they also had ODD/CD. The adolescen

Classes of Oppositional Defiant Disorder Behavior in Clinic-referred Children and Adolescents: Concurrent Features and Outcomes: Classification Des Comportements Dans le Trouble Oppositionnel Avec Provocation Chez Des Enfants et des Adolescents Aiguillés à Une Clinique: Caractéristiques Co-occurrentes et Résultats.

OBJECTIVE: Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) consists of irritable and oppositional behaviors, both of which are associated with different problems. However, it is unclear whether irritability and oppositionality enable classification of clinic-referred children and adolescents into mutually exclusive groups (e.g., high in oppositionality, low in irritability), and whether this classification is clinically meaningful. METHOD: As part of a clinical protocol, ODD behaviors were assessed at referral through a comprehensive diagnostic interview and questionnaire. Parent- and teacher-reported OD

Decreased amygdala-insula resting state connectivity in behaviorally and emotionally dysregulated youth.

The Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) adopts a dimensional approach for examining pathophysiological processes underlying categorically defined psychiatric diagnoses. We used this framework to examine relationships among symptom dimensions, diagnostic categories, and resting state connectivity in behaviorally and emotionally dysregulated youth selected from the Longitudinal Assessment of Manic Symptoms study (n=42) and healthy control youth (n=18). Region of interest analyses examined relationships among resting state connectivity, symptom dimensions (behavioral and emotional dysregulation measu

Editorial: Antidepressants to the Rescue in Severe Mood Dysregulation and Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder?

Children with irritability and outbursts pose a serous therapeutic problem. Many of them have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with emotion dysregulation, which is sometimes captured in the diagnosis of disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD). Some follow-up data find a connection between DMDD and depression and anxiety in adults. This prompted Towbin and colleagues1 to launch a trial where children (ages 7-17) with DMDD were treated first with methylphenidate (MPH) and then randomized to citalopram (CTP) or placebo over 8 weeks. The response to CTP was complicated by lack
