Influence of resilience on autonomic nervous system habituation to repeated stress exposure: Insights from heart rate variability and heart rate response.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study examines resilience's role in modulating autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to repeated psychosocial stress, assessed via heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate (HR) changes. DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty healthy males completed the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) across four sessions, each with six stress phases, to evaluate acute stress response and physiological habituation. Resilience, measured by the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), was analyzed in relation to HR, HRV indices. RESULTS: Resilient individuals exhibited better physiological recover…

Deleterious impact of obstructive sleep apnea on autonomic nervous system control during rapid-eye-movement sleep in adult type 1 diabetes.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 15/h increases the cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in type 1 diabetes (T1D). Cardiovascular autonomic neuropathy (CAN) is a key driver of CVD in diabetes and could be increased by autonomic nervous system (ANS) dysfunction related to OSA. We compared ANS control in T1D patients with AHI ≥ 15/h versus <15/h. T1D patients underwent polysomnography with heart rate variability analysis, cardiovascular reflex tests (CARTs), sudomotor function test, and urinary catecholamine analysis. Compared with patients with AHI < 15/h (n = 14)…

Examining the Influence of Cognitive Load and Environmental Conditions on Autonomic Nervous System Response in Military Aircrew: A Hypoxia-Normoxia Study.

Executing flight operations demand that military personnel continuously perform tasks that utilize low- and high-order cognitive functions. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is crucial for regulating the supply of oxygen (O2) to the brain, but it is unclear how sustained cognitive loads of different complexities may affect this regulation. Therefore, in the current study, ANS responses to low and high cognitive loads in hypoxic and normoxic conditions were evaluated. The present analysis used data from a previously conducted, two-factor experimental design. Healthy subjects (n = 24) aged 19 t…

Listening handicap in tinnitus patients with normal extended high frequencies from the perspective of the autonomic nervous system-Effort or fatigue?

OBJECTIVE: In previous studies, the results regarding the presence of listening effort or fatigue in tinnitus patients were inconsistent. Th … . CONCLUSION: Even though tinnitus patients had normal hearing in the range of 0.125-20 kHz, their autonomic nervous system responses during listening differed from healthy subjects. This difference was interpreted for potential listening fatigue in tinnitus patients.

Complementary role of peripheral and central autonomic nervous system on insulin-like growth factor-1 activation to prevent fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND: Insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) is involved in the pathology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and ameliorates f … ceptor knockout mice upon the development of diet-induced NAFLD. The contribution of the peripheral autonomic nervous system connecting the liver-brain-gut axis was assessed by its blockade using capsaicin and that of the central nervous system was assessed by the expression of hypothalamic brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and corticotropin-releasing factor (CRH), …

Autonomic nervous system and cardiovascular risk assessment during one year of growth hormone replacement therapy in adults with growth hormone deficiency.

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to evaluate the impact of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) on cardiac autonomic tone and on cardiovascular risk and the changes after 12 months of GH replacement therapy (GHRT). GHD is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This has been attributed to increased markers of cardiovascular risk and to abnormalities of both the cardiac and peripheral autonomic nervous systems. The autonomic cardiac nervous system (ACNS) can be indirectly evaluated by analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in clinostatism and orthostatism. DESIGN:…

Child maltreatment and autonomic nervous system reactivity: identifying dysregulated stress reactivity patterns by using the biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat.

OBJECTIVE: Disruptions in stress response system development have been posited as mechanisms linking child maltreatment (CM) to psychopathology. Existing theories predict elevated sympathetic nervous system reactivity after CM, but evidence for this is inconsistent. We present a novel framework for conceptualizing stress reactivity after CM that uses the biopsychosocial model of challenge and threat. We predicted that in the context of a social-evaluative stressor, maltreated adolescents would exhibit a threat pattern of reactivity, involving sympathetic nervous system activation paired with e

Effects of yoga on the autonomic nervous system, gamma-aminobutyric-acid, and allostasis in epilepsy, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

A theory is proposed to explain the benefits of yoga practices in diverse, frequently comorbid medical conditions based on the concept that yoga practices reduce allostatic load in stress response systems such that optimal homeostasis is restored. It is hypothesized that stress induces (1) imbalance of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) with decreased parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity, (2) underactivity of the gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA) system, the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter system, and (3) increased allostatic load. It i…

Electrophysiological effects of high cocaine concentrations on intact canine heart. Evidence for modulation by both heart rate and autonomic nervous system.

BACKGROUND: Previous clinical reports have suggested that cocaine intoxication may produce severe ventricular arrhythmias due to a direct effect on the heart. However, the effects of high plasma levels of cocaine on the electrophysiology of the heart have not been well characterized and remain poorly understood. METHODS AND RESULTS: The purpose of this study was to characterize the electrophysiological effects of high doses of cocaine on the in situ dog heart. In dogs anesthetized with morphine and alpha-chloralose, cocaine (2-11 micrograms/mL) increased both atrial and ventricular refractory

Pharmacological, hemodynamic and autonomic nervous system mechanisms responsible for the blood pressure and heart rate lowering effects of pergolide in rats.

In conscious spontaneously hypertensive rats, pergolide (50.0 micrograms/kg s.c.) produced a sustained decrease in tail artery pressure which was blocked by haloperidol (1.0 mg/kg s.c.) pretreatment. In anesthetized spontaneously hypertensive rats this effect was accompanied by a fall in total peripheral resistance inasmuch as pergolide did not significantly change cardiac output. In anesthetized normotensive rats, pergolide (30.0 micrograms/kg i.v.) also lowered blood pressure. This effect was not significantly modified by adrenalectomy, methysergide, idazoxan (alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist

Comprehensive Assessment of Autonomic Nervous System Profiles in Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome Among Syncope, Chronic Fatigue, and Post-COVID-19 Patients.

Background/Objectives: Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia characterized by excessive tachycardia during orthostatic stress. It is frequently observed in patients with syncope, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), and post-COVID-19 syndrome (PCS), yet the underlying mechanisms may differ across these conditions. This study aimed to assess autonomic nervous system (ANS) function in patients with syncope, CFS of insidious onset, and CFS post-COVID-19 who presented with POTS, and to compare them with age- and sex-matched patients without POTS. Methods: In this re…

Trauma-related dissociation and the autonomic nervous system: a systematic literature review of psychophysiological correlates of dissociative experiencing in PTSD patients.

Background: Neurophysiological models link dissociation (e.g. feeling detached during or after a traumatic event) to hypoarousal. It is currently assumed that the initial passive reaction to a threat may coincide with a blunted autonomic response, which constitutes the dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Objective: Within this systematic review we summarize research which evaluates autonomic nervous system activation (e.g. heart rate, blood pressure) and dissociation in PTSD patients to discern the validity of current neurophysiological models of trauma-related hypoa…

Autonomic Nervous System Inflexibility During Parent-child Interactions is Related to Callous-unemotional Traits in Youth Aged 10-14 Years Old.

Youth with callous-unemotional (CU) traits are at high risk for aggression and antisocial behavior. Extant literature suggests that CU traits are related to abnormal autonomic responses to negatively-valenced emotional stimuli, although few studies have tested autonomic responding specifically during social interactions. To address this knowledge gap, the current study tested whether CU traits were related to autonomic activity, assessed via respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), during several parent-child interaction tasks designed to provoke negative emotion. The sample was 162 clinically refe
