The effect of overwing hatch placement on evacuation from smaller transport aircraft.

Overwing exits are installed on a number of smaller transport aircraft. With a traditional overwing exit, once released, the hatch is not attached to the fuselage and will fall into the cabin. To operate, the hatch has to be brought inwards, manoeuvred and placed in a location where it does not obstruct egress. Accidents and experimental studies have shown that the hatch is not always disposed of into an appropriate location. Evacuation trials from a smaller transport aircraft cabin were conducted. The placement of the exit hatch was manipulated. The results indicated that hatch placement had

Injury risk factors in parachuting and acceptability of the parachute ankle brace.

INTRODUCTION: This investigation examined risk factors for injuries during military parachute training and solicited attitudes and opinions regarding a parachute ankle brace (PAB) that has been shown to protect against ankle injuries. METHODS: Male Army airborne students (N = 1677) completed a questionnaire after they had successfully executed 4 of the 5 jumps necessary for qualification as a military paratrooper. The questionnaire asked about injuries during parachute descents, demographics, lifestyle characteristics, physical characteristics, physical fitness, airborne recycling (i.e., repe

Effect of total shoulder replacements on airport security screening in the post-9/11 era.

There are few reports in the literature on the effect of orthopaedic implants on airport security devices and none on shoulder arthroplasty implants after September 11, 2001. Since 9/11, airport security screening devices have become more sensitive in response to the increasing threat of terrorism. Often, patients with joint implants activate the metal detectors and are subsequently subjected to more intensive screening. We assess the effects of shoulder joint implants on different airport security devices and what effect the results had on passenger travel. In this study, 154 patients who had

Early stabilization of traumatic aortic transection and mitral valve regurgitation with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

We report a case of life-threatening aortic transection with concomitant mitral papillary muscle rupture and severe lung contusion caused by a failed parachute jump. This blunt thoracic injury was treated by early stabilization with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation followed by successful delayed graft repair of the descending aorta and mitral valve replacement with a mechanical prosthesis.

Breath-holding ability of offshore workers inadequate to ensure escape from ditched helicopters.

BACKGROUND: Following a helicopter ditching in water, the survival rate of individuals not mortally injured by the impact ranges from 50-85%. One possible cause for this low survival rate is that the crew and passengers cannot hold their breath underwater long enough to make the often difficult escape from an inverted and submerged helicopter. METHODS: We investigated pulmonary function, breath-holding times in air (BHTa) and water (BHTw) of 228 students enrolled in offshore survival courses required to work in either the offshore petroleum industry or in military marine aviation. Comparisons…

[EGG and nausea under vestibular stimulus].

81 pilots were exposed to vestibular stimulus with Coriolis acceleration. They were divided into two groups, the first group consisted of 38 pilots with nausea symptoms, the second group 43 pilots without nausea symptom. Dominant frequency instability coefficient (DFIC), dominant power instability coefficient (DPIC), Tachygastria, Bradygastria and normal slow wave components (NSW) of the electrogastrogram (EGG) were analyzed. The results showed that Bradygastria and NSW of EGG were related to nausea symptom of pilots under Coriolis stimulation.

The toxicological examination of the victims of the British Air Tours Boeing 737 accident at Manchester in 1985.

The results of toxicological analyses of the body fluids of the victims from the accident involving the British Air Tours Boeing 737 in August 1985 are presented for carboxyhemoglobin, cyanide, and volatiles. All the victims except one had raised concentrations of carbon monoxide. All the victims had raised concentrations of cyanide. All the victims showed the presence of volatile substances in the blood. Autopsies revealed that all the victims had carbon particles in the trachea and bronchi. Thus, all the victims must have inhaled fire products in the burning aircraft cabin. Six victims had c

Heat stress exposure of aerial spray pilots.

Heat stress (WBGT index) in the cockpits of agricultural spray pilots, and its physiological and subjective effects, were measured for 9 pilots flying in hot weather for a large Israeli aerial spray company. There was concern that heat exposure may be one of the factors involved in a recent increase in the fatal and non-fatal crash rate among Israeli spray pilots. WBGT index calculations were based on sequential cockpit wet bulb, dry bulb, and globe temperatures read when aircraft landed. The WBGT was always above 25 degrees C and exceeded 26.7 degrees C in 70% of observations. In pilots, a da

[Operational fatigue: debriefing from Kapisa, Afghanistan].

The concept of operational fatigue, a term first used during the Second World War, was subsequently extended to encompass a vague series of psychological disorders. This article looks back at an overseas operation in Afghanistan, during the summer of 2011, where the tense background situation, casualties and fatalities resulted in some members of the commando parachute units suffering from such conditions.

Effects of Long-Term Speech-in-Noise Training in Air Traffic Controllers and High Frequency Suppression. A Control Group Study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 1) if air traffic controllers (ATC) perform better than non-air traffic controllers in an open-set speech-in-noise test because of their experience with radio communications, and 2) if high-frequency information (>8000 Hz) substantially improves speech-in-noise perception across populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The control group comprised 28 normal-hearing subjects, and the target group comprised 48 ATCs aged between 19 and 55 years who were native Spanish speakers. The hearing -in-noise abilities of the two groups were characterized under two signal conditions: 1) s

Neck muscle activity in skydivers during parachute opening shock.

This observational study investigated skydiver neck muscle activity during parachute opening shock (POS), as epidemiological data recently suggested neck pain in skydivers to be related to POS. Twenty experienced skydivers performed two terminal velocity skydives each. Surface electromyography quantified muscle activity bilaterally from the anterior neck, the upper and lower posterior neck, and the upper shoulders; and two triaxial accelerometers sampled deceleration. Muscle activity was normalized as the percentage of reference maximum voluntary electrical activity (% MVE); and temporal muscl

Prevalence of Intraventricular Conduction Disturbances in a Large French Population.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations for the interpretation of electrocardiogram have been published in 2009. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of intraventricular conduction disturbances (ICoDs) in a large population, using these recommendations. METHODS: From 01/31/1996 to 09/22/2010, an electrocardiogram was performed at each visit for all aircrew members examined for fitness assessment in an aeromedical center. The prevalence of left bundle branch block (LBBB), right bundle branch block (RBBB), incomplete LBBB, incomplete RBBB, nonspecific intraventricular disturbance (NIVCD), lef

Pilots' age and incidents in helicopter emergency medical services: a 5-year observational study.

BACKGROUND: Helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) are considered to have a higher risk of incidents compared to other airborne operations. As HEMS poses high cognitive demands, age-related cognitive changes of helicopter pilots might become a safety risk. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between the age of pilots and incidents in HEMS. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study of incidents during HEMS operations of one Austrian and two German air rescue organizations between 2007 and 2011. The sample included 257 regularly operating HEMS pilots. Age

The craving to smoke in flight attendants: relations with smoking deprivation, anticipation of smoking, and actual smoking.

In the study, the authors examined the effects of smoking deprivation, anticipation of smoking, and actual smoking on the craving to smoke. Flight attendants who were light to heavy smokers rated their craving to smoke at predetermined time points during a 2-way short flight (each leg 3-5.5 hr) and a 1-way long flight (8-13 hr). In both short and long flights, craving increased gradually and peaked as landing approached. Craving levels at the end of the 1st leg of the short flights were equal to those at the end of the long flight and were much higher than those at the parallel time point in t

Role of forensic odontology in the world's major mass disasters: facts and figures.

UNLABELLED: Forensic identification of the victims in mass disasters is essential, not only for humanitarian reasons, but also for civil or criminal investigative need. The number of victims identified with the help of forensic odontology in various mass disasters in the world has been analysed and discussed. The result depicts the necessity of keeping proper dental records at institutional and individual level. Thus the use of forensic odontology in a series of mass disasters has been explored. The most common aspect of forensic odontology that a general practitioner is likely to encounter is
