INTRODUCTION: Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) typically present with respiratory symptoms, but little is known about the disease's potential neurological complications. We report a case of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) following a severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, in association with leptomeningeal enhancement.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman presented with recent unsteadiness and paraesthesia in both hands. Fifteen days earlier, she complained of fever, dry cough and shortness of breath. Her chest X-ray showed a lobar consolidatio

Atlantoaxial rotatory dislocation (AARD) represents a rare pathological condition of the upper cervical spine that is frequently misdiagnosed, leading to a delay in therapy. In a long-term assessment of clinical and radiological results, three different therapeutic options with regard to the length of the dislocation-therapy interval (DTI) were evaluated. Twenty-six patients were treated for AARD from December 1988 until April 2000. Proper diagnosis was established after an average interval of 15 months. Three different therapeutical protocols were followed in order to reduce the dislocation:

Cervical angina is defined as a paroxysmal precordialgia that resembles true cardiac angina caused by cervical spondylosis. Cervical angina most commonly results from compression of the C7 ventral root. We present here a case of cervical angina caused by atlantoaxial instability. This case had marked atlantoaxial instability but no flexibility of the middle to lower levels of the cervical spine. Although there was mild C7 root compression on the radiologic findings, the chest pain was induced by neck motion, and the precordialgia disappeared after posterior atlantoaxial fusion without C7 root

PURPOSE: ABC is a benign lesion with unpredictable behavior. Its treatment is challenging, especially in poorly accessible surgical areas, such as spine and pelvis. Currently, the first-line treatment of ABC is repeated selective arterial embolization (SAE) until healing. Other options have been used with variable success rates. We propose an alternative treatment for spine aneurysmal bone cyst (sABC) based on the injection of concentrated autologous bone marrow.
METHODS: We retrospectively report and analyze here two cases of patients, a 14-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy, both affected

Vertical C-2 body fractures are presented in 15 patients with clinical and imaging correlations that suggest the existence of a variety of mechanisms of injury. In these patients, clinical and imaging correlations were derived by: 1) defining the point of impact by clinical examination; 2) defining the point of impact by soft-tissue changes on cranial magnetic resonance (MR) imaging or computerized tomography (CT); 3) obtaining an accurate history of the mechanism of injury; and 4) spine imaging (x-ray studies, CT, and MR imaging) of the C-2 body fracture and surrounding bone and soft tissue.

One hundred consecutive patients with atlanto-axial dislocation(s) were subjected to posterior occipito-cervical fusion and followed up to 16 1/2 years postoperatively (mean: 4 1/2 years). The mean age at surgery was 60.3 years. At the time of follow-up, 45 patients had died, mostly due to cardiopulmonary disease. Out of the 100 patients, 67% showed a major improvement and in an additional 14% there was a slight or moderate improvement. Some patients with a stable fusion later developed subaxial dislocation(s) necessitating an anterior fusion which in patients with RA is difficult due to poor

BACKGROUND: Posterior C1-C2 instrumentation and fusion is a well-established technique for the treatment of atlantoaxial instability. Safe posterior exposure is critically important because of the proximity of the vertebral artery, venous plexus, and C2 dorsal root ganglion. However, practical exposure nuances and safety pearls are often underemphasized.
DESCRIPTION: The present video article demonstrates a stepwise approach for posterior exposure for C1-C2 instrumentation and fusion. Preoperative assessment includes dynamic flexion-extension radiographs to evaluate instability and reducibili

INTRODUCTION: Flares may be used as outcomes in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) trials or observational studies. The objective was to develop a definition for 'flare' (or worsening) in axSpA, based on validated composite indices, to be used in the context of clinical trial design.
METHODS: (1) Systematic literature review of definitions of 'flare' in published randomised controlled trials in axSpA. (2) Vignette exercise: 140 scenarios were constructed for a typical patient with axSpA seen at two consecutive visits. Each scenario included a change in one of the following outcomes: pain, Bath A

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) scan and X-ray study on consolidation time of C2 neural arch fractures treated conservatively were examined.
METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken: 28 conservatively treated fractures of the neural arch of the axis (11 hanged-man type I, 5 type II, and 12 miscellaneous fractures) were monitored during the period of orthosis by means of CT scan and plain X-rays performed on admission, and then at intervals between 2 and 120 days afterward. In patients treated with a halo vest (20 cases), a CT scan of the skull was performed to make sure that the pins

BACKGROUND: Sit-to-stand and sit-to-walk are common functional movements that provide insight into an individual's functional mobility. Developing comprehensive measures of these movements using ear-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs), which are increasingly incorporated into widely used devices such as hearing aids and headphones, could provide a means of monitoring older adults and individuals with movement disorders with minimal additional burden.
OBJECTIVE: This paper aimed to introduce comprehensive outcome measures for sit-to-stand and sit-to-walk movements based on data from ear-wor

INTRODUCTION: Children with cervical or cervicothoracic congenital scoliosis are limited in their ability to compensate for the main curve of the deformity because there are only a few mobile segments in their cervical spine. Over the years, we have frequently observed coronal atlantoaxial dislocation (CAAD) in a lateral direction (from left to right or vice versa) in these patients. It was anticipated that CAAD might compensate for the horizontal position of the head, and it is hypothesized that CAAD depends on the degree of scoliotic deformity. Thus, the aim of our study was to investigate w

Exposure of pregnant CD-1 mice to methanol (MeOH) by inhalation on gestation days (gd) 6-15 results in dose-related increases in fetal cleft palate, exencephaly, and skeletal defects. Here, critical periods for the developmental toxicity of MeOH were assessed in pregnant CD-1 mice exposed to 10,000 ppm MeOH or filtered air for 7 hr/day on 2 consecutive days during gd 6-13, or to single day (7 hr) exposures to 10,000 ppm MeOH during gd 5-9. Mice received water but not food during exposure. Maternal blood MeOH was determined at times during, at the end of, and subsequent to a single 7 hr exposur

STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
OBJECTIVE: This is one of the first reported cases of transoral vertebroplasty for a solid metastatic tumor at C2 body.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Percutaneous vertebroplasty has gained popularity as a treatment option for painful neoplastic lesions of the spine. The technique has been useful in reducing pain and stabilizing the spinal segment that is vulnerable to fracture. However, there is very little experience with vertebroplasty in the cervical spine and, more specifically, at C2.
METHODS: We present a case of metastatic renal cell carcinoma of the C2 body.

The surgical management of cervical instability in children is a challenging issue. Although the indications for internal fixation are similar to those for adults, accurate pre-surgery study and sharp surgical techniques are necessary because of the size of such patients' anatomy, their peculiar tissue biology and the wide spectrum of diseases requiring cervical fusion. Our case study is made up of 31 patients, 15 male and 16 female, with an average age of 7 years and 6 months (2 years and 6 months to 18 years) who underwent cervical fusion for instability. Their physical condition presented v
