Pasteurella haemolytica is one of the bacteria most commonly isolated from pneumonic cases in ruminants. Some of the mechanisms and factors involved in the pathogenesis of the disease are partially documented; and the early stages of bacterial colonization have not been totally clarified. Therefore a review is presented in this paper, particularly related with the mechanisms of bacterial pathogenicity responsible of pulmonary damage to ruminants, as well as a detailed analysis of the adherence process.

Cefotaxime and ceftriaxone are currently the agents of first choice for empiric treatment of bacterial meningitis in children. Further studies are necessary to determine the optimal antibiotic therapy for meningitis caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates relatively or fully resistant to penicillin. The Haemophilus influenzae type b capsular polysaccharide-protein conjugate vaccines undoubtedly will alter the relative importance of the three common meningeal pathogens in pediatrics and make additional studies of the adjunctive use of dexamethasone in the treatment of bacterial meningitis e

During infection, Staphylococcus aureus forms dense multicellular structures, called staphylococcal abscess communities (SACs), that are encased in a capsule made of host fibrin to evade host immune defenses. S. aureus cells divide characteristically along successive orthogonal planes, but the contribution of this division geometry to infection is unclear. Here, we show that disrupting orthogonal cell division by deleting the cell division septum placement factor PcdA impairs SAC formation in vivo and in a three-dimensional in vitro model. Bacillus anthracis, a rod-shaped, spore-forming bacterium, is the causative agent of anthrax. The life cycle of B. anthracis involves sporulation and germination processes that are precisely regulated by distinct sigma factors and associated proteins. Its pathogenicity is primarily attributed to a tripartite toxin consisting of lethal factor (LF), edema factor (EF) and protective antigen (PA), as well as an antiphagocytic capsule of Poly-γ-D-Glutamate. The virulence of B. anthracis is further regulated by various post-translational modifications (PTMs), including protein phosphorylation, acety

This study reports a granulomatous hepatitis caused by Mycobacterium avium in an Atlantic yellow-nosed albatross (Thalassarche chlororhynchos) found dead on Brazil southern coast. At necropsy, the albatross was cachectic and the liver was severely enlarged with multifocal to coalescing white nodules. Histopathological evaluation revealed multifocal to coalescing granulomas with caseous necrosis, surrounded by an infiltrate of macrophages and multinucleated giant cells, and a thin capsule of fibrous connective tissue. The Fite-Faraco staining technique revealed multiple acid-fast bacilli (AFB)

Osteomyelitis is an inflammation involving bone and/or bone marrow most often the result of bacterial infection of the bone. In children, osteomyelitis most often has an acute presentation and is caused by hematogenous spread. When osteomyelitis is seen in the extremities, conventional radiography is the first-line imaging modality preformed for diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging employed for further delineation or as a problem-solving tool. A healthy 6-year-old female presented with a history of nonspecific left leg pain for 3-5 weeks which gradually progressed to focal left ankle pain

Staphylococcus aureus is the leading cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections, including soft tissue and skin infections and bacteremia. However, efforts to develop an effective vaccine against S. aureus infections have not been successful. We evaluated serotypes 5 and 8 capsule polysaccharides (CP) CRM197 conjugates as vaccine candidates in murine models of bacteremia, lethal sepsis, and skin infection. The conjugate vaccines elicited a good antibody response, and active immunization of CP5-CRM or CP8-CRM conjugates protected against staphylococcal bacteremia. In the skin infecti

A 69-year-old man developed motor aphasia and right hemiparesis with severe headache, during the treatment of cellulitis and sepsis due to cat bites. Brain CT showed a low density, crescent-shaped lesion in the left subdural space, which was hypointense on brain diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). One week later, when his neurological symptoms had worsened, the signal of the subdural lesion had changed to hyperintense on DWI. The lesion was capsule-shaped when enhanced by Gadolinium. The signal changes on DWI of the lesion indicated the existing hematoma had changed to an empyema, or so-called i

Galactocele is a benign milk retention cyst that may develop during or after lactation. In patients with breast implants, ruptured galactoceles can cause peri-implant fluid collections that mimic implant rupture or infection, creating a diagnostic challenge. This report describes a 37-year-old Asian woman, G1P1, with bilateral prepectoral smooth-surface silicone breast implants who presented 2 months postpartum with progressive left breast swelling that was initially diagnosed as mastitis. After noticing a palpable mass, the patient performed vigorous self-massage and increased breast pumping

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) occurs in the capsule surrounding breast implants. Malignant transformation of T cells by bacteria-driven chronic inflammation may be underlying BIA-ALCL mechanism. Here, we covalently grafted 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC)-based polymers on a silicone surface and examined its effects against BIA-ALCL pathogenesis. MPC grafting strongly inhibited the adhesion of bacteria and bacteria-causing inflammation. Additionally, cancer T cell proliferation and capsule-derived fibroblast-cancer cell communication were eff

BACKGROUND: Infection with the gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei can result in melioidosis, a life-threatening disease that can be difficult to diagnose. Culture remains the gold standard for diagnosis but requires laboratory resources not available in many endemic regions. A lateral flow immunoassay has shown promise for POC diagnostics but suffers from low sensitivity when used on blood samples. PCR also has low sensitivity on blood, attributed to the low bacterial numbers in blood observed in melioidosis patients, even when bacteraemic.
METHODS: A prototype i-STAT cartridge

The Gram-negative bacterium Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of a number of economically important animal diseases, including avian fowl cholera. Numerous P. multocida virulence factors have been identified, including capsule, lipopolysaccharide (LPS), and filamentous hemagglutinin, but little is known about how the expression of these virulence factors is regulated. Hfq is an RNA-binding protein that facilitates riboregulation via interaction with small noncoding RNA (sRNA) molecules and their mRNA targets. Here, we show that a P. multocida hfq mutant produces significantly less h

The aim of this study was to unravel, by focusing on cell surface properties, the underlying virulence factors contributing to the difference in the pathogenicity observed in two Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from the same patient. The two strains were phenotypically different: (i) a mucoid strain (AB-M), highly virulent in a mouse model of pneumonia, and (ii) a nonmucoid strain (AB-NM), moderately virulent in the same model. The study of the cell surface properties included the microbial adhesion to solvents method, the measurement of the electrophoretic mobility of bacteria, the a

Pasteurella multocida is the causative agent of pasteurellosis, a major disease in most domestic animals and livestock. In this study, a total of 34 isolates of P. multocida from rabbits and other domestic animals from Mexico with respiratory diseases underwent polymerase chain reaction-based capsular typing. One sheep isolate was found to belong to capsular serogroup D, whereas the rest of the rabbit, sheep, cattle, pig, goat, and duck isolates belonged to capsular serogroup A of P. multocida. This is the first report of capsular type A in P. multocida isolates from rabbits and duck origin in

The complete structures of LPS core types 1 and 2 from Klebsiella pneumoniae have been described by other authors. They are characterized by a lack of phosphoryl residues, but they contain galacturonic acid (GalA) residues, which contribute to the necessary negative charges. The presence of a capsule was determined in core-LPS non-polar mutants from strains 52145 (O1 : K2), DL1 (O1 : K1) and C3 (O8 : K66). O-antigen ligase (waaL) mutants produced a capsule. Core mutants containing the GalA residues were capsulated, while those lacking the residues were non capsulated. Since the proteins involv

Increasingly, more diseases are becoming vaccine preventable, but maintaining community and provider acceptance demands that the number of injections does not increase. Combination conjugate vaccines represent an inevitable and important advance. This paper reviews the efficacy and safety of combination conjugate vaccines, including immunological mechanisms underlying interactions among vaccine epitopes, the role of immunological memory, and correlates of immunity. Specific attention is given to the experience with combination vaccines against each of Haemophilus influenzae type b, Streptococc
