Anti-obesity effect of the bacterial product nisin in an NIH Swiss mouse model.

Obesity is a life-threatening metabolic disorder that predisposes individuals to other diseases. In this study, the effect of nisin, a bacteriocin produced by some bacteria, on an animal model of obesity based on selected parameters was investigated. Forty Swiss NIH mice were randomly divided into four groups and received either a placebo (saline) or nisin (25, 50, or 100 μg/kg, ip) daily for 8 weeks. The mice in all groups were fed a high-sugar diet throughout the experiment. Bodyweight and food intake were measured weekly, and at the end of the experiment, the levels of FBS, serum triglyceri

Microbial community and antibiotic resistance gene distribution in food waste, anaerobic digestate, and paddy soil.

The study assessed the occurrence and distribution of microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in food waste, anaerobic digestate, and paddy soil samples, and revealed the potential hosts of ARGs and factors influencing their distribution. A total of 24 bacterial phyla were identified, of which 16 were shared by all samples, with Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria, and Proteobacteria accounting for 65.9-92.3 % of the total bacterial community. Firmicutes was the most abundant bacteria in food waste and digestate samples, accounting for 33-83 % of the total microbial co

High-Resolution Genotyping Unveils Identical Ampicillin-Resistant Enterococcus faecium Strains in Different Sources and Countries: A One Health Approach.

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Enterococcus faecium (Efm) infections continue to increase worldwide, although epidemiological studies remain scarce in lower middle-income countries. We aimed to explore which strains circulate in E. faecium causing human infections in Tunisian healthcare institutions in order to compare them with strains from non-human sources of the same country and finally to position them within the global E. faecium epidemiology by genomic analysis. Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed and transfer of vancomycin-vanA and ampicillin-pbp5 resistance was performed by con

Genomic-based characterization of Enterococcus spp.: an emerging pathogen isolated from human gut.

BACKGROUND: Enterococci are ubiquitous microorganisms having diverse ecological niches but most prominently in gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. Production of enterocins makes them a good probiotic candidate. However, their role as probiotics has become ambiguous in the last few years because of the presence of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes. These virulence traits are known to be transferred genetically, which makes them opportunistic pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract leading to serious concerns about their being used as probiotics. In the present study, E

A strategy to control colonization of pathogens: embedding of lactic acid bacteria on the surface of urinary catheter.

Indwelling urinary catheterization is one of the major causes of urinary tract infection (UTI) in hospitalized patients worldwide. A catheter serves as a surface for the colonization and formation of biofilm by UTI-related pathogenic bacteria. To combat the biofilm formation on its surface, several strategies have already been employed such as coating it with antibiofilm and antimicrobial compounds. For instance, the application of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) offers a potential strategy for the treatment of biofilm formation on the surface of the urinary catheter due to its ability to kill the

Listeriolysin S may inhibit the anti-listerial properties of Lactobacillus plantarum.

Listeriosis is a serious infection linked to the consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Outbreaks and mortality rates associated with this infection make it a significant public health concern. As biocontrol agents, probiotics such as Lactobacillus plantarum had been of interest for the promotion of antilisterial activities. However, a recent bacteriocin from epidemic L. monocytogenes strains called listeriolysin S (LLS) has been identified with the ability to target the prokaryotic cells that may hinder the anti-listerial properties of L. plantarum. The present study wa

Core elements of the vegetative replication control of the Inc1 plasmid pO104_90 of Escherichia coli O104:H4 also regulate its transfer frequency.

The highly virulent Escherichia coli O104:H4 isolate that caused a large outbreak in 2011 carries three plasmids. Out of these, only one, the IncI plasmid pO104_90 that encodes two extended spectrum beta-lactamases, can transfer itself by conjugation. Considering its potential contribution to the emergence and virulence of the outbreak strain, we aimed to get a closer insight into pO104_90 transfer efficiency and control. We tested the host spectrum of the plasmid and observed transmission into Enterobactericeae including clinically relevant enterobacterial pathogens like Salmonella typhimuriu

[On the origin of Yersinia pestis, a causative agent of the plague: A concept of population-genetic macroevolution in transitive environment].

An ecological scenario is proposed for the origin of causative agent of the plague (the bacterium Yersenia pestis) from the clone of pseudotuberculous microbe of the first serotype Y. pseudotuberculosis O:1b. Disclosed are the conditions of gradual intrusion of psychrophile saprozoonosis ancestor into the blood of the primary host, Mongolian tarbagan marmot Marmota sibirica. As an inductor of speciation acted the Sartan cooling that occurred in the end of late Pleistocene under conditions of arid ultra-continental climate in Central Asia. In vivo capsular switch in Streptococcus pneumoniae--analysis by whole genome sequencing.

Two multidrug resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae - SV35-T23 (capsular type 23F) and SV36-T3 (capsular type 3) were recovered from the nasopharynx of two adult patients during an outbreak of pneumococcal disease in a New York hospital in 1996. Both strains belonged to the pandemic lineage PMEN1 but they differed strikingly in virulence when tested in the mouse model of IP infection: as few as 1000 CFU of SV36 killed all mice within 24 hours after inoculation while SV35-T23 was avirulent.Whole genome sequencing (WGS) of the two isolates was performed (i) to test if these two isolates

Necrotic enteritis in broilers: an updated review on the pathogenesis.

Clostridium perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis and related subclinical disease have become economically significant problems for the broiler industry. Fortunately, scientific interest in this topic has grown: new C. perfringens virulence factors have been discovered and new insight gained about the pathogenesis of necrotic enteritis. It has been shown that alpha toxin, for a long time thought to be the key virulence factor, is not essential for the development of the disease. Moreover, it is now clearly established that only certain C. perfringens strains are capable of inducing necrotic e

Genetic locus for streptolysin S production by group A streptococcus.

Group A streptococcus (GAS) is an important human pathogen that causes pharyngitis and invasive infections, including necrotizing fasciitis. Streptolysin S (SLS) is the cytolytic factor that creates the zone of beta-hemolysis surrounding GAS colonies grown on blood agar. We recently reported the discovery of a potential genetic determinant involved in SLS production, sagA, encoding a small peptide of 53 amino acids (S. D. Betschel, S. M. Borgia, N. L. Barg, D. E. Low, and J. C. De Azavedo, Infect. Immun. 66:1671-1679, 1998). Using transposon mutagenesis, chromosomal walking steps, and data fro

Biological control of plant pathogens by Bacillus species.

Bacteria from the Bacillus group are microorganisms that inhabit a large number of different habitats. They are well known as producers of a wide array of antagonistic compounds of different structures, having between 5 to 8% of the total genome devoted to biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Most important bioactive molecules from the genus Bacillus are non-ribosomally synthesized peptides and lipopeptides, polyketide compounds, bacteriocins and siderophores. Lipopeptides from Bacillus have very complex mechanisms of biosynthesis catalyzed by non-ribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), large…
