OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of medroxyprogesterone acetate on lactation when it is given immediately post partum.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study with follow-up through 16 weeks post partum.
SETTING: Urban teaching hospital in Baltimore, Md.
PARTICIPANTS: Consecutive sample (N = 95) of mothers who were delivered of healthy, term newborns, had home telephones, received either medroxyprogesterone or nonhormonal contraception at discharge, and were currently breast-feeding their newborns.

In a sample of 76 alcohol rehabilitation program (ARP) residents, homeless men demonstrated significantly poorer perceptuomotor function than nonhomeless men. This difference persisted despite similarities in several factors associated with neurobehavioral test scores including demographic characteristics; frequency, quantity, and duration of alcohol and other substance use; psychosocial factors, including motivation and social support; health, including history of head trauma; and neurotoxic occupational exposure.

Norplant, the five-year subdermal contraceptive system, is the first implantable contraceptive method approved for general use in the United States. We describe the preliminary experiences of 246 U.S. women who accepted Norplant between April, 1991 and September, 1991. Norplant was well accepted among this diverse general population. Intensive counselling about side effects, especially menstrual changes, is crucial for patient satisfaction. Standard virologic methods were used to characterize the relative contribution of each of the enterovirus classes to the etiology of aseptic meningitis during a prospective study of this disease among children < 24 months old. Viruses were isolated in cell culture from 164 (60%) of 274 cases identified over 5 years and in newborn mice from only 2 of 104 remaining cell culture-negative cases.
