Post-traumatic growth of Afghan adolescents after traumatic loss of father.

Adolescents' mental health may be influenced either negatively or positively through loss of a parent, especially bereavement due to a traumatic death. This descriptive phenomenological study aimed to investigate Afghan adolescents' post-traumatic growth after traumatic loss of father. The participants were 14 female and male Afghan adolescents who met the inclusion criteria. Post-traumatic growth was substantiated by virtue of post-traumatic growth questionnaire. Data was collected through a semi-structured interview, and Colaizzi analysis method was used for data analysis. Two main themes we…

In the UK alone, the death toll is 132,742, with 207 people dying the previous day and a total of 6,825,074 cases of Covid-19 thus far (September 1st, 2021). The aim of this study was to look at post-traumatic stress, coping skills and post-traumatic growth in relatives, who lost a loved one during the pandemic. Some 185 individuals took part in a Qualtrics survey. Encountering the Body at the Site of the Suicide: A Population-Based Survey in Sweden.

Encountering the body of a child who died by suicide at the site of death is believed to be especially harmful for bereaved parents. We investigated the association between encountering the body at the site of the suicide and psychological distress in 666 suicide-bereaved parents. Parents who had encountered their child's body at the site of the suicide (n = 147) did not have a higher risk of nightmares (relative risk [RR] 0.95, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.67-1.35), intrusive memories (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.84-1.13), avoidance of thoughts (RR 0.97, 95% CI 0.74-1.27), avoidance of places or thin

[Corneoscleral transplant excision in the cadaver. Experiences of the North Rhine Westphalia Lions Cornea Bank 1995 and 1996].

BACKGROUND: Donor corneas are normally obtained by whole globe enucleation-a procedure often refused by the bereaved. To increase the acceptance of cornea donation, we have exclusively obtained donor corneas by in situ excision since the end of 1994. There have been reports of increased endothelial damage and higher contamination rates. We report our experience in 1995 and 1996. METHODS: The in situ excision was performed by staff trained in microsurgical techniques. Only donor corneas with negative end-storage cultures after at least 10 days and an endothelial cell count of more than 2500 ce

Inventory of Complicated Grief: a scale to measure maladaptive symptoms of loss.

Certain symptoms of grief have been shown (a) to be distinct from bereavement-related depression and anxiety, and (b) to predict long-term functional impairments. We termed these symptoms of "complicated grief" and developed the Inventory of Complicated Grief (ICG) to assess them. Data were derived from 97 conjugally bereaved elders who completed the ICG, along with other self-report scales measuring grief, depression, and background characteristics. Exploratory factor analyses indicated that the ICG measured a single underlying construct of complicated grief. High internal consistency and tes…

[Neonatal death of a newborn twin].

In France, in 2001, 33,000 children were born from multiple pregnancies (4.2% of births). Lately, with the stimulated fertilization improvement, this number has strongly increased. These pregnancies are pretty often difficult and the hospitalizations of the twins (or other multiples) in a neonatal intensive care unit are more frequent than in a single pregnancy (48 vs. 5.3%). Newborn twin death leads the parents to face a tough mourning because of the surviving twin presence. The psychiatrist's function is crucial with the parents, the deceased child, the surviving child and the pediatric staf

Cultural beliefs and practices on perinatal death: a qualitative study among the Lango community in Northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal death has profound psychosocial effects on women and their families. Sociocultural contexts influence the burden, rituals and bereaved's support. Little is known about cultural beliefs and practices related to perinatal death. This study explored the cultural perspectives of the Lango community on perinatal death. METHODS: This study utilised a focused ethnographic design anchored on a symbolic interactionist framework to understand the meanings attached to beliefs and practices on stillbirth or neonatal death among the Lango community in Lira District, Northern Uganda.

The unspoken grief of multiple stillbirths in rural Pakistan: an interpretative phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: Pakistan has the highest rate of stillbirth (30.6 stillbirths per 1000 total births) as compared to other South Asian countries. The psychological impact of stillbirths on bereaved women is well documented; however, there is a dearth of literature on lived experiences of women with multiple stillbirths in Pakistan. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research is to understand the lived experiences of women who had multiple stillbirths in Thatta, Pakistan. METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological study was conducted in district Thatta with eight women who experienced more than one s

Sex differences in schizophrenia: a demographic, symptomatic, life history and genetic study.

Twenty-one male and 32 female inpatients who met the criteria of schizophrenia according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria were compared for demographic, symptomatic, life history, and genetic variables. Courageous conversations: The possibilities and practicalities of discussing death when teaching gerontology.

When developing curricula in gerontology related to families and health, we often relegate death and dying, end-of-life care, and bereavement to the last topic of the course. However, what if we were to restructure our classes to consider death and dying first? This paper explores pedagogical and practice-based strategies for integrating death education into gerontology curricula from the outset. Guided by the Compassionate Communities approach to palliative care (Kellehear, 2005), which emphasizes that experiences of death, dying, and bereavement extend beyond professional domains, we argue t…

Increasing organ donation: a successful new concept.

BACKGROUND: Organ donation rates nationally have changed little in the last 15 years, despite a growing waiting list. About 6000 patients die each year for lack of a donated organ. South Carolina's organ procurement organization, LifePoint, recently restructured itself in an effort to increase donation and transplantation rates. The main change was division of the procurement coordinator position into five new positions. A unique innovation was the creation of a bereavement counseling and education service to provide families of potential donors emotional support and education regarding brain …

"The significance of clinical foetal autopsy for reproductive health care: an ethical analysis in the German context".

The clinical autopsy of foetuses, stillborn babies, or neonates and the examination of the placenta help to inform the mother's decision-making and her medical care for subsequent pregnancies. Indeed, these post-mortem examinations can identify unexpected congenital malformations or the cause of repeated miscarriage or stillbirth. However, the use of clinical pathology for diagnostic purposes in the context of family planning for bereaved parents with an unfulfilled desire to have a child, and IVF couples has received little attention to date. This article applies Beauchamp and Childress' bioe

Impact of the DEDICATED approach to optimizing palliative care for people with dementia: a multi-method study.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care can improve the quality of life of people with dementia. However, nurses and other healthcare professionals often lack the confidence and skills to provide palliative care and struggle to initiate timely conversations about wishes and needs for palliative care. The DEDICATED approach aims to enhance the quality of palliative dementia care by improving knowledge, competencies, and interprofessional collaboration of healthcare professionals. This study explores its impact on palliative care provision from the perspectives of: (1) healthcare professionals implementing

Development and validation of the Terminal Delirium-Related Distress Scale - Shortform.

BACKGROUND: We previously developed a 24-item Terminal Delirium-Related Distress Scale (TDDS) to evaluate patient and family distress due to terminal delirium. However, a scale with fewer evaluation items was needed to reduce the burden on terminally ill patients and their families. Thus, the TDDS Shortform (TDDS-SF) was developed, and the validity and reliability of the scale were evaluated. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to evaluate the validity and reliability of TDDS-SF. METHODS: Items with insufficient loading (<0.6) based on factor analysis were removed from the TDDS.
