Gastric interoception, the sensing of signals from the stomach, plays a central role in regulating hunger, satiety, and fullness and is closely linked to eating behaviors and symptoms of eating disorders (EDs). Gastric motility has been identified as a key mediator of hunger and satiety, with altered gastric rhythms being observed in individuals with EDs. Enhancing gastric interoception by targeting gastric rhythms may therefore offer a promising intervention strategy. This study examined the effects of a novel electrogastrography (EGG)-based gastric biofeedback training delivered using virtua

BACKGROUND: Residual speech sound disorder (RSSD) is a high-prevalence condition that negatively impacts social and academic participation. Telepractice service delivery has the potential to expand access to technology-enhanced intervention methods that can help remediate RSSD, but it is not known whether remote service delivery is associated with a reduction in the efficacy of these methods. This project will systematically measure the outcomes of visual-acoustic biofeedback intervention when delivered in-person or online.
METHODS/DESIGN: This project, Visual-acoustic Intervention with Servi

INTRODUCTION: Defecatory disorders are common affecting up to 8% of the population. Rome IV diagnostic criteria are used to define this condition and, therefore, select patients for the gold standard therapy, anorectal biofeedback. The aim of this study was to test the current Rome IV Functional Defecation Disorder (FDD) criteria in a real-world population by using the response to biofeedback as a validation tool.
METHODS: A total of 485 patients (female 437, mean age 50 ± 17.6 years) with defecatory symptoms presenting to a neurogastroenterology clinic underwent anorectal biofeedback therapy

BACKGROUND: The incidence of anxiety in adults with spinal cord injury/disorder (SCI/D) exceeds that of the general population. Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback training is a potential treatment associated with a reduction in stress and anxiety, however HRV training has not been explored in the SCI/D population.
OBJECTIVES: To describe a modified protocol piloting HRV training to reduce anxiety associated with SCI/D and detail the COVID-19-related modifications.
METHODS: To test the feasibility of the biofeedback treatment, 30 adults with SCI/D will complete this pilot randomized con

INTRODUCTION: Mobile phone-based messaging support and biomarker feedback independently show evidence of increasing an individual's likelihood of quitting smoking. However, the combination of these two strategies to facilitate smoking cessation has not been adequately explored.
METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled trial in Baltimore, Maryland, to assess the efficacy of COach2Quit, a smartphone application that provides exhaled carbon monoxide readings with message support. The primary outcome was self-reported and biochemically verified smoking cessation at 30-day follow-up. Secondar

The present study examined the effects of a visual-based biofeedback training on improving balance challenges in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Twenty-nine youth with ASD (7-17 years) completed an intensive 6-week biofeedback-based videogame balance training. Participants exhibited training-related balance improvements that significantly accounted for postural-sway improvements outside of training. Participants perceived the training as beneficial and enjoyable. Significant moderators of training included milder stereotyped and ritualistic behaviors and better starting balance. Neither IQ nor

OBJECTIVE: Cerebellar ataxia essentially includes deficient postural control. It remains unclear whether augmented sensory information might help cerebellar patients, as the cerebellum underlies processing of various sensory modalities for postural control. Here, we hypothesized that patients with cerebellar degeneration can still exploit audio-biofeedback (ABF) of trunk acceleration as a real-time assistive signal to compensate for deficient postural control.
METHODS: Effects on postural sway during stance were assessed in an ABF intervention group versus a no-ABF disease control group (23 v

BACKGROUND: Electropalatography (EPG) records details of the location and timing of tongue contacts with the hard palate during speech. It has been effective in treating articulation disorders that have failed to respond to conventional therapy approaches but, until now, its use with children and adolescents with intellectual/learning disabilities and speech disorders has been limited.
AIMS: To evaluate the usefulness of EPG in the treatment of speech production difficulties in children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) aged 8-18 years.
METHODS & PROCEDURES: A total of 27 children with

Bruxism is characterised by clenching or grinding of the teeth due to contraction of the masseter, temporalis and other jaw muscles. Bruxism may lead to masticatory muscle hypertrophy, tooth surface loss, fracture of restorations or teeth, hypersensitive or painful teeth and loss of periodontal support. Sleep bruxism has previously been viewed as a dysfunctional movement or pathological condition, whereas it is now accepted as a centrally controlled condition with various systemic risk factors. It has been postulated that sleep bruxism may have a protective role during sleep, for example in re

INTRODUCTION: Functional GI disorders (FGIDs) are common in adults and children. Psychological factors play an important role in the onset and maintenance of FGIDs and in explaining the associated disability. Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnotherapy have been found efficacious in FGIDs but Integrating psychological treatments into traditionally medically-oriented care can be challenging.
AREAS COVERED: This review outlines the case for integrating psychological therapies into medical care for FGIDs and examine various models of integrated care that can be

OBJECTIVES: We previously demonstrated that rumination is produced by an unperceived, somatic response to food ingestion, and we developed an original biofeedback technique based on electromyography (EMG)-guided control of abdomino-thoracic muscular activity. Our aim was to demonstrate the superiority of biofeedback vs. placebo for the treatment of rumination.
METHODS: Randomized, placebo-controlled trial performed in a referral center. Consecutive patients who fulfilled the Rome III criteria for rumination (18 women, 6 men; 19-79 years age) were selected and all included in the study; 1 pati

OBJECTIVE: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is characterised by persistent fatigue, exhaustion, and several physical complaints. Research has shown cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and graded exercise training (GET) to be the most effective treatments. In a first step we aimed to assess the efficacy of heart rate variability biofeedback therapy (HRV-BF) as a treatment method comprising cognitive and behavioural strategies and GET in the pilot trial. In a second step we aimed to compare both interventions with regard to specific parameters.
METHODS: The study was conducted in an outpatient tr

BACKGROUND: Earlier versions of biofeedback systems for balance-related applications were intended primarily to provide "alarm" signals about body tilt rather than to guide rehabilitation exercise motion. Additionally, there have been few attempts to evaluate guidance modalities for balance rehabilitation exercises. The purpose of this proof-of-concept study is to evaluate the effects of guidance modalities during common dynamic weight-shifting exercises used in clinical settings.
METHODS: A motion guidance system providing visual biofeedback, vibrotactile biofeedback, or both, was used durin

The aim of this study was to test if cue-exposure therapy (CET) combined with biofeedback therapy (BT) could decrease craving and physiological reactivity to drug-related cues in heroin dependents. Forty-five participants were randomly assigned to usual rehabilitation with or without CET combined with BT. Craving was assessed by a 100-point visual analog scale (VAS). Skin conductance (SC) and muscle electromyography (MEG) were recorded using a biofeedback device. After 2 months of treatment, both the pre-cue exposure craving and the post-cue exposure craving, SC, and MEG were lower in the expe

Few clinical studies have evaluated physiotherapeutic interventions in patients with degenerative cerebellar ataxia. Investigations on the effectiveness of biofeedback-based interventions for training postural control in these patients have not been conducted yet. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of a 2-week intensive tongue-placed electrotactile biofeedback program for patients with progressive cerebellar ataxia. Subjects were seven adult patients suffering from cerebellar degeneration. Postural control was assessed with static posturography in two sensory conditio
