PURPOSE: To determine the theoretical amount of surface area available for palpation of the scaphoid in various wrist positions and to provide a guide depicting which wrist position will expose proximal pole, waist, and distal pole fractures.
METHODS: Using 3 fresh-frozen male cadaver wrists, we digitized palpable surface areas (dorsal, volar, and snuffbox) of the scaphoid in several wrist positions. The entire scaphoid was then excised and a digitized 3-dimensional reconstruction of the entire scaphoid was obtained. The 2 images were superimposed and the surface area was calculated

A retrospective study was carried out on eight consecutively treated children, 2 to 14 years of age, seven with toxic epidermal necrolysis and one with transitional-type Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The body surfaces affected ranged from 40% to 100%. Seven of the patients were taking a sulfonamide or anticonvulsant before the onset of their disease. Complete reepithelialization took an average of 15 days, but newly evolving lesions of the lips and oropharynx continued for approximately 4 more weeks. These lesions took an additional 2 to 4 weeks to heal. Only one of the children died.

The macroscopic staining method was used to display and measure the epithelium of the human subglottic space. Small islands of squamous metaplasia were found in about 40% of the non-smoking, non-bronchitic urban population. There was no age or sex difference, although a highly significant decrease in size of the subglottic space was found in women throughout life.

Successful treatment of pemphigus foliaceus (PF) often requires a multimodal therapeutic approach. The dog described herein underwent four therapeutic plasma exchange treatments for severe, refractory PF, resulting in a 50% reduction of lesional body surface area.
