Cadmium (Cd) is a nephrotoxic environmental pollutant that causes insidious injury to the proximal tubule that results in severe polyuria and proteinuria. Cystatin C is a low molecular weight protein that is being evaluated as a serum and urinary biomarker for various types of ischemic and nephrotoxic renal injury. The objective of the present study was to determine if cystatin C might be a useful early biomarker of Cd nephrotoxicity. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were given daily injections of Cd for up to 12 weeks. At 3, 6, 9 and 12 weeks, urine samples were analyzed for cystatin C, protein, crea…

Sanitation in urban slums, especially in countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, is a challenge. One of the solutions to sanitation is to valorize waste, and to convert bio-waste present in the slum in a cheap and affordable way into lignite via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). HTC is simple, cheap, converts all carbon (100%), eliminates pathogens completely, and requires wet starting products/biomass, thereby avoiding complicated drying schemes. In this research, we investigated the effectiveness of removing a divalent metal-ion, cadmium, using equilibrium batch experiments and columns of sand-supp…

The use of quantum dots (QDots) as bright and photostable probes for long-term fluorescence imaging is gaining more interest. Thus far, (pre)clinical use of QDots remains limited, which is primarily caused by the potential toxicity of QDots. Most QDots consist of Cd2+ ions, which are known to cause high levels of toxicity. In order to overcome this problem, several strategies have been tested, such as the generation of cadmium-free QDots. In the present study, two types of cadmium-free QDots, composed of ZnSe/ZnS (QDotZnSe) and InP/ZnS (QDotInP), were studied with respect to their cytotoxicity…

Cadmium (Cd) is a well-known toxicant targeting many organs, among them placenta. This heavy metal also has embryonary and foetal toxicity. This study was undertaken to analyse the effect of a single Cd dose administered at 4, 7, 10 or 15 days of gestation on the offspring of pregnant rats sacrificed at 20 days of gestation. Cadmium chloride was administered subcutaneously at 10 mg/kg body weight to Wistar pregnant dams; control animals received a proportionate volume of sterile normal saline by the same route. Maternal uteri, livers, kidneys and lungs, and foetuses were examined at necropsy. …

The increasing use of products derived from nanotechnology has raised concerns about their potential toxicity, especially at the immunocompetence level in organisms. This study compared the immunotoxicity of cadmium sulfate/cadmium telluride (CdS/Cd-Te) mixture quantum dots (QDs) and their dissolved components, cadmium chloride (CdCl2 )/sodium telluride (NaTeO3 ) salts, and a CdCl2 /NaTeO3 mixture on four animal models commonly used in risk assessment studies: one bivalve (Mytilus edulis), one fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss), and two mammals (mice and humans). Our results of viability and phagocyto…

Microorganisms need to resist the hazards posed by heavy metals during the process of metal adsorption. Phanerochaete chrysosporium is a fungus that is efficiently used for heavy-metal biosorption in wastewater treatment. Extraction and analysis of proteins induced by heavy metals can help to understand the regulatory mechanisms of P. chrysosporium in wastewater treatment. In this study, P. chrysosporium was exposed to 50 μM cadmium nitrate. A maximum cadmium adsorption capability of 77.1 mg/g dry biomass was found after 65 h, which was accompanied by a relatively higher protein concentration.…

Heavy metal toxicity is often caused by occupational exposure. Chronic cadmium toxicity is a significant health concern among workers engaged in zinc smelting, battery production and silver jewellery industries, particularly in developing countries. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with severe osteoporosis, impaired renal function and acquired Fanconi syndrome. He was finally diagnosed with chronic cadmium toxicity resulting from long-term occupational exposure. Cadmium has a long biological half-life and there is no effective treatment for people who are exposed to it. Th…

Our objective was to evaluate the relationship between intrauterine exposure to cadmium and the presence of atopic dermatitis in infants 6 months of age, adjusted for covariates including exposure to other heavy metals. The present research is a component of the Mothers' and Children's Environmental Health (MOCEH) study, a multi-center birth cohort project conducted in Korea. Study subjects were restricted to pregnant women in whom cadmium and lead levels were measured at delivery and whose infants were assessed for the presence of atopic disease at 6 months of age. The odds ratio (OR) for the…

Observations of specific interactions of the heavy metal cadmium with the estrogen receptor have spawned a series of studies to investigate the propensity of this and other heavy metals to act as estrogen mimicks. There is good evidence that Cd has the ability to produce estrogenic effects in rodents, including proliferation of the uterine and mammary tissues. These effects could be suppressed by cotreatment with specific estrogen receptor antagonists, suggesting mediation via the estrogen receptor. Epidemiological studies have provided some support for the idea that Cd poses cancer risks for …

The aim of this study was to assess the cadmium (Cd) toxicity on renal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoenzymes. The study was carried out on 18 inbred male (Cd group: 10 and control group: 8) Wistar rats. Cd group received drinking water containing 15 mg/L Cd for 30 days; and at the end of the 30 days, plasma Cd was analysed. One kidney was snap frozen to assess the endothelial NOS (eNOS), inducible NOS (iNOS) and neuronal NOS (nNOS) expressions by Western blot analyses, and the other kidney was preserved for histopathological examination. Plasma Cd levels were significantly elevated in the Cd …

The removal of metal ions from aqueous solutions by biosorption plays an important role in water pollution control. In this study, dried leaves and branches of poplar trees were studied for removing some toxic elements (cadmium, lead, and uranium) from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium experiments were systematically carried out in a batch process, covering various process parameters that include agitation time, adsorbent size and dosage, initial cadmium, lead and uranium concentration, and pH of the aqueous solution. Adsorption behavior was found to follow Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. …

It has been known for decades that cadmium (Cd) must enter the cell to cause damage, but there was no mechanism to explain genetic differences in response to Cd toxicity until 2005. Starting with the mouse Cdm locus associated with differences in Cd-induced testicular necrosis between inbred strains, a 24.6-centiMorgan region on chromosome 3 was reduced ultimately to 880 kb; in this segment is the Slc39a8 gene encoding the ZIP8 Zn(2+)/HCO(3)(-) symporter. In endothelial cells of the testis vasculature, Cd-sensitive mice exhibit high ZIP8 expression, Cd-resistant mice exhibit very low expressio…

Extensive epidemiological studies have recently demonstrated increased cadmium exposure correlating significantly with decreased bone mineral density and increased fracture incidence in humans at lower exposure levels than ever before evaluated. Studies in experimental animals have addressed whether very low concentrations of dietary cadmium can negatively impact the skeleton. This overview evaluates results in experimental animals regarding mechanisms of action on bone and the application of these results to humans. Results demonstrate that long-term dietary exposures in rats, at levels corre…

Zinc and cadmium are environmental contaminants that have a wide range of effects on the nervous system, but zinc is also considered to be an important metal in the human body. In this study the effect of CdCl(2) and ZnCl(2), at concentrations of 50,150, 250 and 500 microM, on the nerve fibres of the sciatic nerve of the rat isolated in a three-chamber recording bath were studied. At the same concentrations, CdCl(2) and ZnCl(2) were found to have almost the same inhibitory effect on the compound action potential (CAP) of the nerve fibres. Their concentration-effect curves almost overlap and th…

The study on the effects of different concentration (0, 10, 50, 100, 200 and 400 micromol x L(-1)) cadmium (Cd) on the antioxidative system in Ganoderma lucidum mycelia indicated that with increasing concentration of Cd, the fresh mass and the proline, total polysaccharides, and reduced polysaccharides contents of G. lucidum mycelia decreased, but non-protein thiol (NPT) content increased. At 400 micromol x L(-1) of Cd, the NPT content increased dramatically, being 5.7 times higher than control. Within the range of test Cd concentrations, the activities of CAT, GR and POD increased first and d…

The cytotoxicity of cadmium (Cd) induced autophagy and apoptosis in MES-13 cells was determined by flow cytometry. Autophagy was also assessed by formation of autophagosomes and processing of LC3. Pharmacological inhibition of autophagy resulted in increased of cell viability, suggesting autophagy plays a role in cell death in Cd-treated mesangial cells. Cd also induced a rapid elevation in cytosolic calcium ([Ca(2+)](i) ), and modulation of [Ca(2+)](i) via treatment with IP (3)R inhibitor or knockdown of calcineurin resulted in a change in the proportion of cell death, suggesting that the rel…

Extensive cadmium and lead contamination of water has been reported to occur locally as a result of human activities. Lactic acid bacteria have been reported to remove cadmium and lead from water. The aim of this work was to clarify the mechanisms of cadmium and lead removal from water. In addition, the effect of other metals, reversibility of binding and recyclability of the biomass was assessed. Based on our earlier data, the two most promising lactic acid bacteria, Lactobacillus fermentum ME3 and Bifidobacterium longum 46, were selected for these experiments. The results showed that the pre…

Chronic exposures to cadmium compounds are carcinogenic. It was hypothesized that the development of resistance to cadmium may drive carcinogenesis. This is achieved by selection of resistant cells in which the apoptotic response is significantly attenuated. The induction of cadmium resistance in rat lung epithelial cells (LEC) was used to explore the mechanisms of cadmium-induced adaptation and carcinogenesis. Our previous results showed that LECs developed resistance to apoptosis during cadmium adaptation possibly due to perturbation of the c-Jun NH(2)-terminal kinase pathway. Here, we furth…

In the present study, the accumulation of Mn and other metals by Phytolacca Americana L. from contaminated soils in Hunan Province, South China, was investigated. Results showed that the average concentrations of Mn in the leaves and roots reached 2198 and 80.4 mg kg(-1) (dry weight), respectively, with a maximum 13,400 mg kg(-1) in the leaves. A significant correlation was found between Mn concentrations in the plant leaves and those in the corresponding soils. Hydroponic experiments were also conducted to study the Cd uptake ability and interactions between Mn and Cd in the plant. It was fou
