Neck and brain transitory vascular compression causing neurological complications. Results of surgical treatment on 1,300 patients.

In this brief article we describe the role of compression of the vertebral subclavian arteries, internal mammary, internal carotid arteries, brachial plexus and coiling and kinking of the vertebral and basilar arteries, the faulty irrigation of blood supply and oxygen of the cerebellum and basal ganglia of the brain. Among the effects are: a decrease in the secretion of dopamine at the level of the putamen, which produces the symptoms of Parkinson's disease, and chorea due to chronic transitory faulty blood supply and oxygen to the caudate nucleus, ballism by hypoxia at the level of subthalami…

Striatal dopaminergic correlates of stable parkinsonism and degree of recovery in old-world primates one year after MPTP treatment.

Despite widespread use of the primate 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) model of Parkinson's disease, there is a paucity o … reatment. At one year after MPTP treatment, the mean dopamine depletions in different subregions of caudate nucleus and putamen had diminished in Asymptomatics (21-81%), Milds (35-96%), and Moderates (86-97%). Dopamine loss in nucleus accumbens was relatively spared compared with most striatal subregions, yet in Severe monkeys the decrease in this region reached …

Neostriatal projections from cytoarchitectonically defined gyri in the prefrontal cortex of the dog.

The cytoarchitecture and neostriatal projections of the canine prefrontal cortex (PFC) were examined by using Nissl, silver degeneration, au … te as dorsoventrally oriented longitudinal bands within the medial half of the head and body of the caudate nucleus. Projections from the polar and dorsal proreal gyri terminate most medially in the nucleus while projections from the lateral part of the proreal, subproreal, orbital, and paraorbital gyri terminate progressively more laterally within the medial hal …

[A case of hemiballismus during cryptococcal meningitis].

We present a case of hemiballismus related to cryptococcal meningitis. A 23 year-old man was hospitalized because of involuntary movements of his left side, confusion, hyperpyrexia, neck stiffness, bilateral papilledema, right hemiparesis and bilateral pyramidal signs. Diagnosis was made by CSF examination demonstrating cryptococci by india ink. CT with contrast showed hyperdense lesions in the head of the right caudate nucleus, in the left internal capsule and in the frontal and occipital lobes. After treatment with amphotericin B, 5-fluorocytosine and haloperidol, he experienced rapid recove…

[Electrical activity of the cortex and subcortical structures during the development of hypoxia due to blood loss].

Previous experiments on dogs showed that in several cases, along with the development of hypoxia, polymorphous delta-waves changed into synchronous oscillations, also of delta range, the so-called standard slow complexes (SSC). The new experimental data showed discharges of neuronal pool during SSC to be present in the caudate nucleus, lateral and medial thalamus, hypothalamus, hypocampus, n. amygdale, and mesencephalic reticular formation. The most frequent neuronal pulse activity was connected with the second half of the SSC negative phase (P is less than 0.01). Discharge flashes of the neur…

The basal ganglia and apraxia.

Ever since Liepmann's original descriptions at the beginning of the century apraxia has usually been attributed to damage confined to the ce … usions to be drawn from this meta-analysis are that lesions confined to the basal ganglia (putamen, caudate nucleus and globus pallidus) rarely, if ever, cause apraxia. Lesions affecting the lenticular nucleus or putamen nearly always intruded into the adjacent lateral white matter to involve association fibres, in particular those of the superior longitudinal fa …

Striatal changes in preproenkephalin mRNA levels in parkinsonian monkeys.

Levels of preproenkephalin (PPE) mRNA were measured in different sectors of the striatum with in situ hybridization histochemistry in both normal and parkinsonian (MPTP-treated) squirrel monkeys. In parkinsonian monkeys, a marked increase in PPE mRNA levels was noted in the dorsolateral third of the precommissural putamen and in most of the postcommissural putamen. These regions largely correspond to the sensorimotor striatal territory. The other striatal sectors, including the caudate nucleus, did not exhibit significant changes, despite the fact that the loss of the dopaminergic input was se…

Subcortical correlates of developmental language disorder: more than the neostriatum.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder that affects receptive and expressive language skills. In cont … here were significant differences in the DLD group in volume and microstructure of the neostriatum (caudate nucleus, putamen). However, in contrast to our prediction, there were also significantly smaller structures in the DLD group across other subcortical structures evaluated: globus pallidus, thalamus and hippocampus. The hippocampal difference is of particula …

Quantitative assessment of subcortical atrophy and iron content in progressive supranuclear palsy and parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy.

It is a matter of debate whether increased brain iron levels are the cause or only the consequence of neurodegenerative process in degenerative parkinsonism. The aim of this study is to characterize disease-related changes in volumes and iron-related R2 values of basal ganglia and thalamus. 13 patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), 15 with a parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-p), 29 with Parkinson's disease (PD), and 21 age-matched controls underwent 3-Tesla MRI. The R2 values and volumes were calculated for the selected subcortical structures (caudate nucleus, p…

Network methods for describing sample relationships in genomic datasets: application to Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Genomic datasets generated by new technologies are increasingly prevalent in disparate areas of biological research. While many … ally, we find that cor(K,C) reveals the profound effect of Huntington's disease on samples from the caudate nucleus relative to other brain regions. Furthermore, we find that this effect is concentrated in specific modules of genes that are naturally co-expressed in human caudate nucleus, highlighting a new strategy for exploring the effects of disease on sets of …

Dexamethasone induces limited apoptosis and extensive sublethal damage to specific subregions of the striatum and hippocampus: implications for mood disorders.

It has been shown previously that the synthetic corticosteroid dexamethasone induces apoptosis of granule cells in the dentate gyrus and striatopallidal neurons in the dorsomedial caudate-putamen. We investigated whether or not dexamethasone can induce damage to other neuronal populations. This issue was addressed using OX42 immunohistochemistry to visualise activated microglia and thereby gauge the extent of dexamethasone-induced neuronal death. A single dose of dexamethasone (20mg/kg, i.p.) administered to young male Sprague-Dawley rats induced a strong microglial reaction which was restrict
