INTRODUCTION: Glypican-3 (GPC3) is a surface-bound proteoglycan overexpressed in pediatric liver cancer and utilized clinically as an immunohistochemical tumor marker. Furin is a proprotein convertase that is ubiquitously expressed and shown to modify GPC3 post-translationally. In experimental models of epithelial-based cancers, furin inhibition decreased tumor cell migration and proliferation representing a potential therapeutic target.

A 47-year-old woman who had been treated for chronic hepatitis was admitted to our hospital because of a productive cough that developed after she took Pien Tze Huang. Blood serum from cattle experimentally infected with trypanosomes was tested for its activity influencing granulocyte migration. Pooled porcine granulocytes were used in the migration assay. Antrafenine effectively suppressed carrageenan paw oedema in the rat (ED 40 = 24 mg/kg p.o) in the dose range of 10-40 mg/kg p.o, approximating that of phenylbutazone. Using a leucocyte migration inhibition test sensitisation to Mallory bodies (alcoholic hyalin) was found in a statistically significant 41% of 17 patients with alcoholic hepatitis. Patients with alcohol-induced fatty liver and cirrhosis did not demonstrate sensitisation. Mallory bodies are a characteristic feature of alcohol-induced liver damage, and immunological sensitisation to them might lead to liver cell death and cell progression of the hepatitis process.

The author discusses the part that certain anti-inflammatory drugs have played in increasing our understanding of the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and in adding to our knowledge of the mediators of the inflammatory response. Increasingly, the therapeutic agents under discussion have directed attention to the role of the macrophage in inflammation. Closer examination of existing anti-inflammatory or anti-rheumatic drugs and their mode of action has more recently directed attention towards immunomodulation.

The AA. have tested human sera from subjects with a clinical condition of delayed hypersensitivity (TBC and eczematous contact dermatitis) in order to detect factors affecting leukocyte migration in agarose plates. They found either inhibiting or stimulating factors of cellular migration. According to the most recent data about the same area they emphasyze a sort a regulatory mechanism of LIF or factors with activity LIF-like, due to antagonistic substances present in sera of their patients. Furthermore they suggest a list of factors able to inhibit or to enhance cellular migration.

The response of peripheral blood leucocytes to PPD was studied in vitro by means of the leucocyte migration test, using Mantoux-positive and -negative subjects. The migration of leucocytes from 83% of the positive subjects was significantly inhibited when a concentration of 100 μg PPD/ml was used in the chambers.
