Adhesive resin-cements are increasingly used in modern dentistry. Nevertheless, released substances from resin materials have been shown to cause cellular toxic effects. Disc-shaped specimens from 12 different resin cements and one conventional zinc phosphate cement were prepared and used for direct stimulation of five different human cell lines via transwell cell culture system or in an indirect way using conditioned cell culture media. Cytotoxicity was determined using LDH and BCA assays. All tested cements led to a decrease of cell viability but to a distinct extent depending on cell type,

The management of femoral neck fractures remains controversial. Treatment options include a wide variety of internal fixation methods, unipolar or bipolar hemiarthroplasty or total hip replacement. We carried out a systematic review of the available literature to detect differences between cemented and cementless fixation of bipolar prostheses in treating femoral neck fractures in patients aged 60 years or older.Thirteen studies involving a total of 1561 bipolar hemiarthroplasties (770 cemented and 791 uncemented) were identified. Uncemented hemiarthroplasty was associated with significantly lo

BACKGROUND: Most North American surgeons predominantly use uncemented stems in primary total hip arthroplasties (THAs) and reserve cemented stems for selected older patients and those with poor bone quality. However, data on this "selective use" strategy for cemented stems in the population at risk for periprosthetic fracture and implant loosening are limited. The purpose of this study was to describe implant survivorship, complications, and radiographic results of a specific collarless, polished, tapered cemented stem (Exeter; Stryker) used selectively in a predominantly elderly population un

BACKGROUND: Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are leading treatments for patients with vertebral body compression fractures. Although cement augmentation has been shown to help relieve pain and instability from fractures containing a cleft, there is some controversy in the literature regarding the procedure's efficacy in these cases. Additionally, some of the literature blurs the distinction between clefts and cement patterns (including cement nonunion and cement fill pattern). Both clefts and cement patterns have been mentioned in the literature as risks for poorer outcomes following cement augm

Background and Objectives: Hip fractures constitute the most debilitating complication of osteoporosis with steadily increasing incidences in the aging population. Their intramedullary nailing can be challenging because of poor anchorage in the osteoporotic femoral head. Cement augmentation of Proximal Femoral Nail Antirotation (PFNA) blades demonstrated promising results by enhancing cut-out resistance in proximal femoral fractures. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of augmentation on the fixation strength of TFN-ADVANCEDTM Proximal Femoral Nailing System (TFNA) blades and screws

OBJECTIVES: This study was performed with the aim of investigating the temporal patterns and determinants associated with mortality from asbestosis among 21 cohorts of Asbestos-Cement (AC) workers who were heavily exposed to asbestos fibres.
METHODS: Mortality for asbestosis was analysed for a cohort of 13 076 Italian AC workers (18.1% women). Individual cumulative asbestos exposure index was calculated by factory and period of work weighting by the different composition of asbestos used (crocidolite, amosite, and chrysotile). Two different approaches to analysis, based on Standardized Mortal

OBJECTIVE: Hydrofluoric-acid etching followed by silanization is a routine clinical protocol for durable bonding to glass ceramics. Simplifying ceramic-bonding procedures, new technological developments involve the inclusion of a silane coupling agent in a self-adhesive composite cement. To investigate the effectiveness of the incorporated silane coupling agent, shear bond strength (SB) to ceramic and dentin, contact angle of water (CA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) assessments were correlatively conducted.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to report on percutaneous reduction and fixation for the treatment of fractures of metatarsal shaft. Between March 2015 and October 2017, 29 patients (37 fractures of metatarsal shaft) were treated using a cemented Kirschner wire (K-wire) frame. The accuracy of reduction of the fragments was assessed as anatomic (0 to 8 points), good (9 to 11 points), fair (12 to 15 points), or poor (>15 points). The Maryland foot score was used to assess pain and functional outcomes. All fractures were reduced using percutaneous techniques. Anatomic reduction was ac

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the biomechanical changes in the adjacent vertebrae under a physiological load (500 N) when the clinically relevant amount of bone cement was injected into fractured cadaver vertebral bodies.
METHODS: The embalmed cadaver thoracolumbar specimens in which each vertebral body (T12-L2) had a BMD of < 0.75 g/cm2 were used for the experiment. For establishing a fracture model, the upper one third of the L1 vertebra was performed wedge osteotomy and the superior endplate was kept complete. Stiffness of specimens was measured in different states. Strain of the adjacen

Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is one of the most devastating failures in total joint replacement (TJR). Infections are becoming difficult to treat due to the emergence of multi-drug resistant bacteria. These bacteria produce biofilm on the implant surface, rendering many antibiotics ineffective by compromising drug diffusion and penetration into the infected area. With the introduction of new antibiotics there is a need to create benchmark data from the traditional antibiotic loaded bone cements. Vancomycin, one of the commonly used antibiotics, shows activity against Methicillin-resistant

Magnesium phosphate cements (MPC) have been demonstrated to have a superior bone regeneration capacity due to their good solubility under in vivo conditions. While in the past only aqueous MPC pastes have been applied, the current study describes the fabrication and in vitro/in vivo testing of an oil-based calcium doped magnesium phosphate (CaMgP) cement paste. Premixed oil-based pastes with CaMgP chemistry combine the advantages of conventional MPC such as high mechanical strength and good resorbability with a prolonged shelf-life and an easier clinical handling. The pastes set in an aqueous

The cement industry generates a substantial amount of gaseous pollutants that cannot be treated efficiently and economically using standard techniques. Microalgae, a promising bioremediation and biodegradation agent used as feedstock for biofuel production, can be used for the biotreatment of cement flue gas. In specific, components of cement flue gas such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and sulfur oxides are shown to serve as nutrients for microalgae. Microalgae also have the capacity to sequestrate heavy metals present in cement kiln dust, adding further benefits. This work provides an extensiv

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Various types of osteoconductive graft materials are used for the management of alveolar bone defects arising out of periodontal disease. Inorganic, self-setting, bioactive bone cements are suggested to be most appropriate because they can conformally fill the bone defect and resorb progressively along with the regeneration of the host site. A new calcium sulfate-based bioactive bone cement (BioCaS) is developed, having simplicity and effectiveness for bone grafting applications. The response of primary human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells to this material is inves

BACKGROUND: Cement augmentation is a technique used to increase the stability and purchase of pedicle screws in poor quality bone. Various methods can be applied for cement delivery, such as cement injection before screw placement and the use of fenestrated screws. However, potential problems can arise with the use of cement augmentation.
