We prospectively assessed 40 patients who underwent total first metatarsophalangeal joint replacement arthroplasty using a ceramic implant for the treatment of hallux rigidus. A total of 42 toes in 40 patients were included in the assessment. Preoperatively, the mean American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) hallux first metatarsal score was 36.00 +/- 10.79 points, and first metatarsophalangeal joint range of motion was 4.9 degrees +/- 5.52 degrees . This paper presents a retrospective series of 20 LPM semi-constrained ceramic coated cobalt chrome proximal interphalangeal joint arthroplasties performed consecutively in 12 patients for arthritis of the proximal interphalangeal joint by a single surgeon between 2000 and 2004. We reviewed the results of 51 patients with benign bone tumours treated by curettage and implantation of calcium hydroxyapatite ceramic (CHA). The mean follow-up was 11.4 years (10 to 15.5). Post-operative fractures occurred in two patients and three had local recurrences; three had slightly limited movement of the adjacent joint and one had mild osteoarthritis. From 1985-1990, a total of 277 elderly patients underwent hemiarthroplasty using a ceramic head prosthesis. Average patient age was 81.7 years. From 1985 to 1995, 417 patients with dislocated medial femoral neck fractures (Garden III-IV) were treated with hemiarthroplasty using a Biolox ceramic head.
