Association Between Sarcopenia and Acupressure Testing in Older Adults Requiring Long-Term Care.

Background and Objectives: This study analyzed the relationship between pressure pain test outcomes and sarcopenia in elderly patients and explored possible clinical applications. Materials and Methods: The participants included 143 older adults requiring long-term care who could be diagnosed with sarcopenia. Along with sarcopenia diagnosis, the participants underwent acupressure testing symmetrically at nine sites (occiput, lower cervical, trapezius, supraspinatus, second rib, lateral epicondyle, gluteus, greater trochanter, and knee), totaling 18 sites. The analyses included comparisons of s

Tgif1 and Tgif2 Regulate Axial Patterning in Mouse.

Tgif1 and Tgif2 are transcriptional repressors that inhibit the transcriptional response to transforming growth factor β signaling, and can repress gene expression by direct binding to DNA. Loss of function mutations in TGIF1 are associated with holoprosencephaly (HPE) in humans. In mice, embryos lacking both Tgif1 and Tgif2 fail to complete gastrulation, and conditional double null embryos that survive past gastrulation have HPE and do not survive past mid-gestation. Here we show that in mice of a relatively pure C57BL/6 strain background, loss of Tgif1 alone results in defective axial patter

Congenital abnormalities of the vertebral column in ferrets.

Vertebral column pathologies requiring surgical intervention have been described in pet ferrets, however little information is available on the normal vertebral formula and congenital variants in this species. The purpose of this retrospective study was to describe vertebral formulas and prevalence of congenital vertebral anomalies in a sample of pet ferrets. Radiographs of 172 pet ferrets (96 males and 76 females) were included in this retrospective study. In 143 ferrets (83.14%), five different formulas of the vertebral column were recorded with normal morphology of vertebrae (rib attachment

[25 years of experience in the treatment of Raynaud's disease and Raynaud-like syndromes].

Reference is made to a series of 620 cases of Raynaud's phenomenon observed at the University of Milan between 1951 and 1977. The following parameters are analysed: sex, age, aetiology (where known), incidence of involvement of the four limbs, presence or otherwise of a complete sign, percentage of trophic lesions, arteriographic picture, lab examinations performed. 534 thoracic sympathectomies were performed in 464 patients with Raynaud or Raynaud-like forms. The results are described.

[Atlanto-axial, Atlanto-occipital dislocations, developmental cervical canal stenosis in the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (author's transl)].

Clinical, biological, histopathological and laboratory data are reported on a 13-year-old male with atlanto-axial, atlanto-occipital hypermobilities, cervical canal stenosis, hypoplastic atlas and hypoplastic first rib in the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. He developed frequent attacks of sudden tetraplegia or tetraparesis and numbness below C2 due to trivial neck injuries. Examination revealed marked hypermobilities of all joints the cutis elastica (Fig. 1), spastic tetraparesis and fasciculation of the tongue. Occipito-atlantal hypermobility measured by Wiesel and Rhothmans' method revealed 5 mm ho

Causes and Mechanisms of Death in Fatal Water Buffalo Attacks.

Deaths due to buffalo attack have not been well described. A 72-year-old man was trampled by a water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) while attempting to move the animal within an enclosed area at an abattoir. At autopsy, there were numerous injuries involving the chest, head, neck, and left upper arm. Blunt force injury had resulted in multiple rib fractures with a flail chest and fracture/dislocation of the mid-cervical vertebrae caused either by physical crushing by the animal against the walls of the enclosure or by stomping. There was also evidence of crush asphyxia with bilateral conjunctival h

A pain in the neck.

A 21-year-old man presented to the emergency department with pain and swelling to the right side of his neck and chest wall with associated shortness of breath. Two days earlier, while playing football, he had been involved in a minor collision with another player where he was struck on the right side of his head, but had managed to continue playing. On examination, the patient had extensive cervical surgical emphysema. There were no further positive findings on respiratory and general examination. A chest x-ray demonstrated no rib or clavicular fractures and no pneumothorax. Therefore, a CT w

Unusual imaging findings in association with spinal osteoblastoma.

This paper describes four patients with spinal osteoblastoma that had unusual imaging features. Two cases arose in the cervical spine and two in the thoracic spine. Three tumours were associated with diffuse sclerosis of the vertebral body (an 'ivory vertebra'). All of these lesions either arose in the vertebral body or extended into the body from the adjacent pedicle. Reactive sclerosis at multiple levels was seen in three cases (one involving adjacent vertebral bodies, two involving adjacent pedicles or laminae and one involving multiple ribs). Osteophyte formation was identified bridging th

Mechanisms of brachial plexus lesions.

The main causes of brachial plexus palsies are traction, due to extreme movements, and heavy impact. In downward traction of the arm and forcible widening of the shoulder-neck angle the lesion will occur in the upper roots and trunk. Forcible upward traction will cause avulsion of T1 and C8. The most violent trauma will result in a lesion at all levels. Rupture of the cords and/or individual infraclavicular nerves will be produced by traction and/or forcible widening of the scapulohumeral angle. Vascular structures are subjected to the same mechanism and injuries of these structures give infor

Characterizing pediatric cervical fusion in the modern era: indications, complications, and fusion rates.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical fusion within the pediatric population presents unique challenges, because pediatric cervical fixation demands careful consideration of anatomical size, physiological differences, and significant prospective growth potential for young patients. In the present systematic review, the authors outline the indications for cervical fusion, summarize patient outcomes in the pediatric population, and characterize the various cervical fixation surgical techniques. METHODS: A retrospective literature review of pediatric cervical fusion was conducted in June 2024 via PubMed, in accor

Bidirectional pressure-induced penetrating necrotizing compartment syndrome in the forearm and surgical reconstruction using a two-lobed latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap in nonfunctional hand scenarios: a report of two cases.

This report describes two similar cases in which the distal forearm was compressed between the rib cage and floor for a prolonged period owing to immobility, resulting in severe compartment syndrome and extensive penetrating necrosis in the forearm. The cases were a 59-year-old man with cervical spondylolisthesis and a 65-year-old man suspected of having Parkinson's disease. A distinctive necrotic pattern characterized by necrosis in the volar and dorsal compartments, preservation of the lateral compartment, and retention of the radial artery was commonly observed in both cases. Despite the an
