Preoperative X-ray C2C6AR is applicable for prediction of difficult laryngoscopy in patients with cervical spondylosis.

BACKGROUND: Airway management is one of the most important techniques in anesthesia practice and inappropriate airway management is related with airway injury, brain hypoxia, and even death. The patients with cervical spondylosis are often confronted with difficult laryngoscopy who are more prone to appear difficult airway, so it is important to figure out valuable predictors of difficult laryngoscopy in these patients. METHODS: We randomly enrolled 270 patients undergoing elective cervical spine surgery and analyzed the cervical mobility data in predicting difficult laryngoscopy. The preoper

Bilateral cervical ribs in a mixed breed dog.

A 4-year-old intact female, mixed breed dog was presented with a complaint of dyspnea. Clinical examination revealed symptoms related to disease of the upper airways. Radiographic findings were consistent with tracheal collapse associated with anomalies involving the seventh cervical vertebra and the first ribs bilaterally. Radiographs were highly suggestive of cervical ribs; computed tomography and ultrasound examination allowed complete characterization and better localization of the anomalies with relationship to the adjacent muscle and vasculature. Cervical ribs are malformations widely de

Biomechanical Analysis of Two-Level Novel Cage-Type Implant for Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion: A Finite Element Analysis.

One of the standard treatments for spinal diseases is anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). ACDF is a secure and successful operation that prevents patients to improve their pain and function. The mechanical goal of the ACDF is to prevent motion between adjoining vertebrae by a novel cage-screw implant. The objective of this study is to analyze the biomechanical flexibility in terms of the range of motion (ROM) of two-level ACDF fixation using the finite element method (FEM). A CT scan-based FEM model of the cervical spine (C2-C7) is used and two-level cage is implanted at C4-C6 segm

Experimental study on mechanism of vertebral osteophyte formation.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this experimental stud y was to explore the mechanism of the vertebral osteophyte formation. METHODS: An experimental model of cervical spondylosis in rabbits was established by resection of the cervical supraspinous and interspino us ligaments and detachment of the posterior paravertebral muscles from cerv ical vertebrae. Because of individual difference, the natural development proced ure of the vertebral osteophyte formation could be seen with a microscope by dyn amic observation. RESULTS: The cartilage end-plate was divided into a growth car tilage layer and an ar

Endoscopic third ventriculostomy for hydrocephalus in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome: a case report.

A patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome presented with hydrocephalus secondary to intraventricular hemorrhage. Fusion of the cervical vertebrae may have impeded cerebrospinal fluid flow. Change in the properties of cerebrospinal fluid flow after hemorrhage may have induced noncommunicating hydrocephalus. Endoscopic third ventriculostomy was effective for the treatment of hydrocephalus associated with Klippel-Feil syndrome.

Brucella spondylodiscitis that affected both cervical and lumbar spines: a rare case report from Syria.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Brucellosis, the most common microbial zoonotic disease in the world, is endemic in both industrialized and underdeveloped countries. Between 2 and 53% of patients with brucellosis, patients develop spondylitis, and people between the ages of 50 and 60 are the most commonly affected. It mostly affects the lumbar vertebrae (L4 and L5 in particular) and the thoracic vertebrae. CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old patient was brought to the neurological clinic after complaining of lower back discomfort, reduced mobility, and lower extremity weakness for 6 weeks. Both the

Anterior cervical discectomy and interbody fusion. An experimental study using a synthetic tricalcium phosphate.

This study evaluates the histological and histochemical changes and osteogenicity of Synthos (tricalcium phosphate ceramic) implanted in the cervical intervertebral space. The cervical vertebrae from C-3 to C-6 were exposed in 20 dogs, and discectomy was performed at the third and fifth spaces. A dowel of Synthos was inserted into the third space, and a piece of fresh autologous graft from the humerus was inserted into the fifth space. The animals were divided into five groups with four animals in each. Four animals were sacrificed at each of 3, 6, 12, 18, and 22 weeks after the procedure. The…

[C6-C7 subluxation and the importance of simple radiology in the emergency department. A case report and literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic fractures and luxations of the cervical spine are commonest in young patients. A good basic radiological study of the region between the occipitocervical joint and the first thoracic vertebra is essential. The antialgic spasm which causes the shoulders to be raised means that their image is superimposed on that of the cervico-dorsal vertebrae hiding the latter. Suitable technical measures should be taken for X-ray images of this area. If these are not satisfactory, computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) are indicated. CLINICAL CASE AND CONCLUSIONS

Is there an association between fractures of the cervical spine and first- and second-rib fractures?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate a potential association between cervical spine injury and first- and second-rib fractures. METHODS: Retrospective review of the radiologic and medical records of 28 consecutive patients admitted to an acute spinal injury unit. RESULTS: A total of 10 (36%) of the patients with cervical spine trauma also had fractures of either the first or second ribs. Eight of these 10 patients had a fracture or fracture-subluxation of the seventh cervical vertebra or the C6/7 segment. CONCLUSION: Almost one-third of patients with traumatic cervical spine injury have an associated

Analysis of the morphometric characteristics of the cervical spine and its association with the development of temporomandibular disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are frequently observed in various populations. They affect both the temporomandibular joints … d triangle (p = 0.0060); TMD and depth of cervical curvature (p = 0.0302); TMD and deformity of the cervical vertebrae (p = 0.0001). DISCUSSION: The findings suggest a significant relationship between TMD findings and both cephalometric and morphometric parameters of the cervical spine.

Cervical spondylosis anatomy: pathophysiology and biomechanics.

Cervical spondylosis is the most common progressive disorder in the aging cervical spine. It results from the process of degeneration of the intervertebral discs and facet joints of the cervical spine. Biomechanically, the disc and the facets are the connecting structures between the vertebrae for the transmission of external forces. They also facilitate cervical spine mobility. Symptoms related to myelopathy and radiculopathy are caused by the formation of osteophytes, which compromise the diameter of the spinal canal. This compromise may also be partially developmental. The developmental pro

[Classification of upper cervical fractures: a review].

Upper cervical fracture-dislocations are series of pathological injuries occurred in occipital, atlas and axis caused by traumatic impact, which often results in severe clinical consequences, such as paraplegia, quadriplegia, and even death. In light of the potential severe clinical outcomes, it is important to define the type of upper cervical fracture-dislocations depending on which the clinician can deal with the disease properly. Owing to its specific anatomical structures, the upper cervical fractures occurr to the unique osseous structures or ligamentous connections always present in pre
