BACKGROUND: Varicella-zoster is a highly contagious DNA virus, transmitted by direct contact and respiratory droplets. An attenuated live-virus vaccine has recently become available and is of value for susceptible, nonimmunized people. As with other attenuated vaccines, such as measles, mumps and rubella virus, there is no evidence of transmission by those immunized, and it is generally recognized that these vaccines can be given to the close contacts of pregnant women.
CASE: A 32-year-old woman at 39 weeks of gestation presented with generalized pruritic vesicles and pustules. Diagnosis of p

Varicella is a common benign childhood illness. Rarely, serious complications arise. Immunocompromised patients usually suffer a more serious form of the illness. It is therefore prudent to prevent the infection in this group of patients. Varicella vaccination has been proven by several workers to be effective in both healthy children and adults as well as in leukaemic children. As the vaccine had not been licensed for sale in Singapore, we could only import 10 doses of the vaccine under special license. This was given to 8 leukaemic children. Of this, 5 seroconverted after the first dose. Two

To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of breakthrough varicella cases in Jiangsu Province and provide a basis for optimizing prevention and control strategies. Data were integrated from the Chinese Information System for Disease Control and Prevention and the Jiangsu Province Comprehensive Vaccination Service Management System. Since the implementation of the policy of free two-dose Varicella vaccination (Varicella Vaccine, VarV) for children aged 1 to 6 in 2023, the average annual incidence rate of varicella in Jiangsu Province (59.42 per 100,000) has been significantly lower than th

Objective: To evaluate the immunogenicity and safety of a booster dose of varicella attenuated live vaccine administered at different time intervals in Chinese children aged 7-12 years. Methods: This study was conducted in Xuzhou City, Jiangsu Province, from October 2024 to October 2025 using an open-label design. Children aged 7 to 12 who had received the initial immunization of the attenuated live varicella vaccine were recruited as the research subjects. They were divided into 4 groups based on the time interval from primary immunization to booster immunization (3, 18, 36 and 60 months grou

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to synthesize existing evidence to compare the immunogenicity and safety of domestic and imported live-attenuated varicella vaccine (VarV) in healthy Chinese populations.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, China National Knowledge Internet (CNKI), Wan Fang Database, and Chinese Biomedical Literature Service System (SinoMed) using predefined search terms to identify relevant studies. Retrieve all language articles up to March 15, 2024. Articles reported varicella vaccination in healthy Chinese populations were included. We calculated the pooled ra

Whether reducing exposure to varicella by the implementation of the routine varicella vaccination program for children leads to increased incidence of herpes zoster (HZ) remains controversial. The aim of the present study was to identify the trend in the hospitalization associated with HZ before and after the introduction of routine varicella vaccination by using nationally representative data from an inpatient database in Japan. Data were obtained on the number of inpatients hospitalized for HZ from the "Survey on the effect of the introduction of Diagnosis Procedure Combination (DPC) databas

INTRODUCTION: In Argentina, an estimated 400 000 varicella cases occur annually. Given the under-recording of existing cases, the actual burden of disease is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the burden of varicella before the introduction of the varicella vaccine in the national immunization schedule.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective, analytical, observational study carried out in three hospitals of Argentina. Review of medical records from outpatient visits to the Emergency Department and from patients younger than 18 years hospitalized for varicella. Period: 1/2011-12/2013.
RESULTS: A to

OBJECTIVE: To describe the impact of the introduction of the viral tetra vaccine in the National Immunization Program in 2013 for 15-month-old children in mortality rates and hospitalization associated with varicella in Brazil.
METHODS: Mortality rates and hospitalizations rates associated with varicella were evaluated between 2010 and 2016 and described according to Brazilian macro regions and age. The population was stratified into age groups: < 1year, 1-4 years, and 5-14 years. Data were collected from the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System. A percentage difference was cal

BACKGROUND: Despite high 1-dose vaccination coverage, breakthrough varicella infections still occur. Therefore, 2-dose vaccination is recommended to enhance the immune response to the virus. However, the reported incremental vaccine effectiveness (VE) of 2-dose vaccination varies widely among studies.
METHODS: To determine the overall effectiveness, immunogenicity and safety of one vs. two-dose varicella vaccination, we searched five databases for articles published during 1995-2017.
RESULTS: The incremental VE/efficacy of 2-dose vaccination was 79% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 56%-90%) in

INTRODUCTION: The Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE), with the support of the Americas Health Foundation (AHF), has developed a position paper on varicella prevention in Latin America and Caribbean countries (LAC). This article summarizes the most relevant aspects of varicella in LAC, and emphasizes the need to include the varicella vaccine in the national immunization programs in the Region and evaluate its impact disease burden.
AREAS COVERED: A systematic review was conducted of the medical evidence published and presented at various regional medical conference

BACKGROUND: Varicella infection during pregnancy poses a serious risk for both foetus and mother. It has been suggested that it would be more cost-effective to screen antenatally with post-partum vaccination, which occurs in the US, than the current policy of checking immune status post varicella exposure, with VZIG administration where necessary. Additionally, it is doubtful whether the current policy provides best patient care, when a vaccine is available.
OBJECTIVES: The study aims to retrospectively compare the cost of the current policy with a cost estimate for antenatal screening with p
