Longitudinal associations between self-regulation and health across childhood and adolescence.

OBJECTIVE: There is some evidence to suggest that one's ability to delay gratification is associated with a lower body mass index (BMI) and slower overall weight gain. Less is known about the role that a broader set of self-regulatory skills, including attention focusing, inhibitory control, and impulsivity, might play in fostering not only a healthy weight but also better overall health and health-related behaviors such as sleep. METHOD: Participants in the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Study of Early Child Care and Youth Development were followed from birth throug

[The "secret book" of Dr Friedrich Benjamin Osiander: anonymous births in the Göttingen Accouchierhaus, 1794-1819].

The problem of anonymous or confidential deliveries, a subject of current controversy, has a long history. Some maternity hospitals offered the possibility for "clandestine" births as early as the 18th and 19th century. A recently emerged source about the maternity clinic of Göttingen University allows insight into the motives that led to keeping a birth secret and the consequences of such a clandestine birth for mother, father and child. The director of the institution, a professor of obstetrics, wrote case reports on the women, who paid a handsome sum for his help and the in-patient care the

Addressing the complexity of recovery beyond reductionist, diagnosis‑driven care: a realist evaluation of a family-centered, narrative-based child and adolescent psychiatry practice.

BACKGROUND: Conventional approaches following the biomedical model focused narrowly on symptom reduction often overlook critical social and familial factors influencing youth mental health, perpetuating stigma and long‑term dependence on care. As an example of a unique and innovative family-centered, narrative based approach in child and adolescent psychiatry in the Netherlands, this study examines “Het Huis”, to understand what aspects of its systemic, recovery‑oriented approach support meaningful recovery, for whom, and under what conditions. METHODS: We conducted a theory‑driven realist eva

Intergenerational transmission of violence in Bangladesh: Mediated through maternal attitudes towards intimate partner violence, disciplinary beliefs, and life satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION: Child discipline, while intended to instill appropriate behavior, often manifests as violent practices in low- and middle-income countries, including Bangladesh. Maternal exposure to violence, attitude towards intimate partner violence (IPV), and disciplinary beliefs serve as key determinants of physical disciplinary practices. These dynamics illustrate how exposure to violence in adulthood can shape parenting behaviors, highlighting the urgency of addressing cultural attitudes that sustain harsh physical discipline. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study analyzed nationally represen

Navigating family life in the face of parental cancer: a qualitative study.

PurposeParental cancer can significantly impact family dynamics, particularly for adolescents and young adults (AYAs), who face the developmental task of balancing autonomy and connectedness. As cancer incidence rises globally, more AYAs are confronted with the challenges of parental illness. While most research focuses on individual psychological outcomes, less is known about how families function as a unit under such stress. This study aimed to gain deeper insight into family functioning, with a specific focus on autonomy, connectedness, and communication, in the face of parental cancer.Meth

Exploring psychological preparedness for volcanic hazards in early childhood education: A sequential explanatory mixed-methods approach in Ternate Island.

UNLABELLED: Small volcanic islands are characterised by high hazard exposure and structural vulnerability, conditions that may increase psychological risks for young children. Although disaster preparedness has received increasing attention in early childhood education (ECE), psychological preparedness in volcanic small-island settings remains underexplored. This mixed-methods study examined psychological preparedness among ECE stakeholders on Ternate Island, Indonesia, using survey data from 127 participants and six focus group discussions within the tripusat pendidikan framework of family, s

Fostering Trust With a Young Man Experiencing Homelessness and Advanced Cancer.

Persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) face countless barriers to equitable health, social, and palliative care across all settings. Brandon was a 23-year-old male, well-spoken, groomed, and polite despite difficult circumstances. He was severely abused then abandoned as a child, living in multiple foster homes until 18. With no consistent caring adult figure, he predictably fell into a chaotic lifestyle, had 3 children by different mothers, and became homeless in New York City. He presented with newly diagnosed renal cell carcinoma metastatic to lung, lymph nodes, and bone. Spine and pelvic

Homelessness Is Socially Created: Cluster Analysis of Social Determinants of Homelessness (SODH) in North West England in 2020.

Poverty creates social conditions that increase the likelihood of homelessness. These include exposure to traumatic life experiences; social disadvantages such as poor educational experiences; being raised in a broken family, care homes or foster care; physical, emotional, and sexual abuse; and neglect at an early age. These conditions reduce people's ability to negotiate through life challenges. This cross-sectional study documents the clustering and frequency of adverse social conditions among 152 homeless people from four cities in North West England between January and August 2020. Coping and Observed Emotions in Children of Parents with a History of Depression.

OBJECTIVES: The ability to experience, express, and maintain positive emotions and reduce negative emotions during stress has been cited as a marker of resilience, yet much needs to be learned regarding what mechanisms underlie this ability in youth. The current study assesses relations between coping strategies and observed emotion expression and maintenance in offspring of depressed mothers as possible mechanisms to promote resilience. METHODS: Mothers with a history of depression (N = 160) and their children (M age = 11.38) participated in two video-recorded interactions about a recent ple

Caregiver perception of sleep-disordered breathing-associated symptoms in children of rural Andean communities above 4000 masl with chronic exposure to biomass fuel.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have uncovered a very high prevalence of sleep disorders in general, and of sleep-disordered breathing in particular among children exposed to indoor biomass fuel pollution. However, despite the significant symptomatology, parents are unlikely to report these issues during health-care visits. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether reduced caregiver perception of sleep disorders may account for the infrequent diagnosis and treatment of such problems in children residing at high altitudes and exposed to high biomass pollution. METHODS: Pare

The quality of material care provided by grandparents for their orphaned grandchildren in the context of HIV/AIDS and poverty: a study of Kopanong municipality, Free State.

A pervasive argument in the literature on AIDS orphans in South Africa is that grandparents, who often care for their orphaned grandchildren, lack the material means to provide adequate care. This study investigated that claim in an area of ubiquitous poverty and very high unemployment. It is based on the analysis of data obtained from two surveys carried out by the HSRC in the semi-rural municipality of Kopanong in the Free State. The first study was a census which targeted the whole population. The second, smaller survey sampled households which accommodated orphaned and vulnerable children.

Understanding social support's role in the relationship between maltreatment and depression in youth with foster care experience.

This study investigated whether more complex maltreatment experiences predicted higher levels of depressive symptomatology for young adults and examined the role of social support during late adolescence in that association. Specifically, the study tested whether social support had a direct effect on depression and whether it mediated and/or moderated the relationship between self-reported maltreatment and depression in a sample of 513 youth exiting the child welfare system. Indices of maltreatment types (neglect and physical, sexual, psychological abuse) experienced during two periods (precar

Impact of war and forced displacement on children's mental health-multilevel, needs-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches.

The infliction of war and military aggression upon children must be considered a violation of their basic human rights and can have a persistent impact on their physical and mental health and well-being, with long-term consequences for their development. Given the recent events in Ukraine with millions on the flight, this scoping policy editorial aims to help guide mental health support for young victims of war through an overview of the direct and indirect burden of war on child mental health. We highlight multilevel, need-oriented, and trauma-informed approaches to regaining and sustaining o

Childhood adversity, social support networks and well-being among youth aging out of care: An exploratory study of mediation.

The goals of the present study are to examine the relationship between childhood adversity and adult well-being among vulnerable young adults formerly placed in substitute care, and to investigate how characteristics of their social support networks mediate this association. A sample of 345 Israeli young adults (ages 18-25), who had aged out of foster or residential care, responded to standardized self-report questionnaires tapping their social support network characteristics (e.g., network size or adequacy) vis-à-vis several types of social support (emotional, practical, information and guida
