Quantifying Associations Between Child Health and Neighborhood Social Vulnerability: Does the Choice of Index Matter?

IMPORTANCE: Policymakers have increasingly utilized place-based social disadvantage indices to quantify the impacts of place on health and inform equitable resource allocation. Indices vary in design, content, and purpose but are often used interchangeably, potentially resulting in differential assignments of relative disadvantage depending on index choice. OBJECTIVE: To compare associations between three commonly used disadvantage indices (Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), Area Deprivation Index (ADI), and Child Opportunity Index (COI)) and two epidemiologically distinct child health outcome…

Editorial: Pandemics Interact With and Amplify Child Mental Health Disparities: Further Lessons From COVID-19.

Infectious diseases change our world. It is a simple understanding that history has consistently shown but it is a set of lessons that are routinely forgotten. From cholera1 to smallpox,2 pandemics amplify and run along societal fractures that form in the context of disparities. As of early September 2023, COVID-19 had caused nearly 7 million deaths worldwide, and there have been over 1.1 million deaths in the United States.3 The scale of this impact on children and families is only beginning to become clear.

Parental Assistance with Emotion Regulation Moderates Link Between COVID-19 Stress and Child Mental Health.

OBJECTIVE: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted children's mental health. All children have not been affected equally, however, and whether parental emotion socialization might buffer or exacerbate the impact of COVID-19 on children's mental health remains an important question. METHOD: During the first peak of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. N = 200 parents of children ages 0-17 (52.5% female) completed questionnaires related to parental assistance with children's emotion regulation, symptomatology, and exposure to COVID-19-related stress. Parents were 74% Non-Hispanic/Latino/a Whit

Identification and Characterization of Oral Injury in Suspected Child Abuse Cases: One Health System's Experience.

OBJECTIVES: Accurately differentiating inflicted from accidental injury in infants and toddlers is critical. Many studies have documented characteristics of inflicted bruises, fractures, and head injuries facilitating the development of clinical tools. There are few studies characterizing inflicted oral injuries, and no clinical tools exist. This study identified characteristics that differentiated inflicted from accidental oral injuries in children younger than 24 months. METHODS: Retrospective review using International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision billing codes and an interna

Knowledge, experiences and attitudes of dental health professionals towards reporting child abuse in Western Australia.

BACKGROUND: Up to 50% of child abuse (CA) victims exhibit evidence of traumatic facial or intraoral injuries. Dental health professionals (DHPs) are therefore well-positioned to detect and report incidences of CA. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of Western Australian DHPs towards identifying and reporting CA. METHODS: General dentists, specialists, hygienists and oral health therapists completed an online questionnaire which assessed their knowledge and experience in identifying and reporting CA. RESULTS: A total of 228 participants completed the questionnaire (represe

Mental health nurses' perceived preparedness to work with adults who have child sexual abuse histories.

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: The high prevalence of adults presenting to the mental health services places mental health nurses (MHNs) in a unique position to help to identify and support the person with the associated challenges of child sexual abuse (CSA). Feelings of discomfort have been identified by mental health nurses (MHNs) when working with survivors of CSA due to a lack of knowledge, poor confidence and feeling unprepared to inquire and respond to such a sensitive topic. WHAT DOES THE STUDY ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: MHNs are willing to engage in CSA dialogue; however, the level o

Epigenetic marks of prenatal air pollution exposure found in multiple tissues relevant for child health.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal air pollution exposure has been linked to many adverse health conditions in the offspring. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying these associations. Epigenetics may be one plausible biologic link. Here, we sought to identify site-specific and global DNA methylation (DNAm) changes, in developmentally relevant tissues, associated with prenatal exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O3). Additionally, we assessed whether sex-specific changes in methylation exist and whether DNAm changes are consistently observed across tissues. METHODS: Genome-scale

Adult mental health outcomes of child sexual abuse survivors born at extremely low birth weight.

The high prevalence of child sexual abuse (CSA) is concerning, particularly as survivors are at increased risk for multiple adverse outcomes, including poor mental health across the lifespan. Children born at an extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000g) and who experience CSA may be a group that is especially vulnerable to psychopathology later in life. However, no research has considered the mental health risks associated with being born at ELBW and experiencing CSA. In this study, we investigated the mental health of 179 ELBW survivors and 145 matched normal birth weight (NBW; >2500g) partic

Nutrition education and counselling provided during pregnancy: effects on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes.

Nutrition education and counselling (NEC) is a commonly applied strategy to improve maternal nutrition during pregnancy. However, with the exception special populations and specific diets, the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and child health outcomes has not been systematically reviewed. Using a modified Child Health Epidemiology Reference Group method we systematically reviewed the literature and identified and abstracted 37 articles. We conducted meta-analyses for the effect of NEC on maternal, neonatal and infant health outcomes including gestational weight gain, maternal anaemia, birth…

Sauvons les Bébés: child health and U.S. humanitarian aid in the First World War era.

From 1917 to 1923, the American Red Cross organized an array of long-term child health projects in Europe as part of its larger wartime and post-war humanitarian efforts. Across the continent, the organization established child health clinics, better baby shows, playgrounds, fresh air camps, and courses for women on infant and child hygiene. Hundreds of U.S. doctors, nurses, and other child welfare professionals traveled to Europe to administer these programs. These activities call attention to American efforts to reform the health of European youth and, in so doing, to reshape European medici…

The linkages among childhood maltreatment, adolescent mental health, and self-compassion in child welfare adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Childhood maltreatment is a robust risk factor for poor physical and mental health. Child welfare youths represent a high-risk group, given the greater likelihood of severe or multiple types of maltreatment. This study examined the relationship between childhood maltreatment and self-compassion - a concept of positive acceptance of self. While not applied previously to a child welfare sample, self-compassion may be of value in understanding impairment among maltreatment victims. This may be most pertinent in adolescence and young adulthood, when self-identity is a focal development

Testing guidelines for child health care nurses to prevent nonsynostotic plagiocephaly: a Swedish pilot study.

The aim of the study is to test effectiveness of guidelines for nurses that can be incorporated into the child health care program to prevent nonsynostotic plagiocephaly (NSP) in infants while still following sudden infant death syndrome-preventive recommendations. When guidelines were followed as intended in a Swedish pilot study, only 8.5% of infants had some degree of NSP at 6 months, compared to 25.6% of infants in the comparison group. Results indicate that the early and regular implementation of these guidelines by nurses may be an effective way to prevent NSP.

Breast implant surveillance reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration: maternal-child health problems.

There is continuing concern that women who receive breast implants may be at increased risk for adverse reproductive outcomes or experience problems with breastfeeding. It is unknown whether exposure to biomaterials in breast implants may have teratogenic effects or leach into breast milk causing postnatalproblems. We studied the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) experience by analyzing a case series of adverse event reports received and entered into the FDA's Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database or the Device Experience Network (DEN) database by December 31, 2002

Adolescent Behavioral Health Outcomes of Child Welfare Involved Youth with and without Childhood Suicidal Ideation.

We examined whether child welfare-involved children aged 7-11 with suicidal ideation (SI) experience worse adolescent behavioral health compared to peers without SI. Using longitudinal data from the National Survey of Child and Adolescent Wellbeing I and II (N = 1,641), propensity score weighting balanced baseline characteristics. We compared groups on adolescent outcomes (ages 12-15) from youth and caregiver reports. Children with SI at ages 7-11 had twice the odds of adolescent SI and four times the odds of self-reported self-injury, though caregiver reports did not confirm the latter. No si

Residence time, children's mental health, and parent-child relationships in separated families: A longitudinal study.

This study examined the longitudinal association between the division of children's residence time between parents and their depressive and anxiety symptoms using children's self-reports. We also explored whether the quality of mother-child and father-child relationships moderated the associations between residence time with the father and children's mental health symptoms. The sample included 266 children aged 6-16 years at baseline from 217 families recruited through family counseling offices across Norway. Mixed-effects regression models were used to assess associations between a continuous

Cognitive analytic therapy in child and adolescent mental health services: systematic scoping review of evidence.

AIMS AND METHOD: Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) is a relational, time-limited psychotherapy primarily evidenced to support adults with emotional and relational difficulties. The extent of evidence for CAT in younger populations is not known. This paper aimed to collate all published articles describing CAT with under-18-year-olds and establish feasibility and effectiveness of CAT in this population. An initial systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, PsycINFO and CINAHL databases, with a second search using key terms and author names in the Association for Cognitive Analytic Therapy websi

Breastfeeding may lessen socioeconomic disparities in child health through differences in the infant gut microbiome.

Lower familial socioeconomic status (SES) is linked to increased childhood disease risk. Since SES has no inherent biological basis, identifying how it becomes physiologically embedded is essential for equitable intervention. Using data from the Canadian CHILD birth cohort (n = 2,752) with replication in the Danish Copenhagen Prospective Studies on Asthma in Childhood 2010 (COPSAC2010) cohort (n = 681), we analyze modifiable pathways linking SES to child health and find that the infant gut microbiota plays a key mediating role. Breastfeeding is associated with a stabilized infant microbiota, b…
