Treatment of respiratory syncytial virus infection with vitamin A: a randomized, placebo-controlled trial in Santiago, Chile.

BACKGROUND: Treatment with high dose vitamin A reduces complications and duration of hospitalization for children with measles. In respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection, as with measles, low serum vitamin A concentrations correlate with increased severity of illness. METHODS: To determine whether high dose vitamin A treatment is also effective for treating RSV disease, we conducted a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial among 180 RSV-infected children between 1 month and 6 years of age at three hospitals in Santiago, Chile. Children with nasal washes positive for RSV antig…

Cost-benefit analysis for the use of Haemophilus influenzae type b conjugate vaccine in Santiago, Chile.

Cost-benefit analyses can be integral to the evaluation of interventions in developing countries. The authors compare the potential benefits to the Chilean Ministry of Health, in terms of treatment costs averted, by prevention of Haemophilus influenzae type b (HIB) invasive disease, with the costs of adding HIB conjugate vaccine to the diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DTP) immunization routinely administered to infants. In their basecase model, over a 10-year period (1991-2000), vaccination against HIB will prevent 1,229 cases of HIB invasive disease, including 713 cases of meningitis, 107 of who…

Geospatial disparities in post-pandemic SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: Evidence from Chile beyond the national success.

While Chile achieved one of the world's highest and most equitable SARS-CoV-2 vaccination coverages during the pandemic, less is known about the post-pandemic stage. This study examines within-country geospatial disparities in COVID-19 vaccination uptake and their socio-demographic determinants in two urban areas of Chile. A population-based survey conducted in May 2024 collected individual data on vaccination status and socio-demographic characteristics. These were georeferenced and linked to census information at the household block level. Spatial analyses explored clustering and correlation…

Spatial distribution and cluster detection of zoonotic dog endoparasites in public parks from Gran Santiago, Chile.

The interaction between dogs and humans has increased significantly. This close contact could affect people's health by transmitting zoonotic parasites present in canine stools. Parks and public squares are places of contact with these agents. In this context, this work aimed to characterize the occurrence of zoonotic risk endoparasites in canine stool collected from the main urban parks of Gran Santiago and to determine whether spatial clusters were present among the detected parasites. For this, 468 stool samples were collected from 26 urban parks, and each sample was analyzed using the modi

Filarial nematodes in domestic dogs and mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) from semi-rural areas in Central Chile.

Climate change, competent vectors, and reservoir animals are the main factors for developing vector-borne zoonotic diseases. These diseases encompass a significant and widespread category of pathogens (e.g., viruses, bacteria, protozoa, and helminths) transmitted by blood-feeding arthropods, including ticks, fleas, lice, triatomines, mosquitoes, sandflies, and blackflies. In Chile, several studies have explored the role of dogs as reservoirs of vector-borne pathogens; however, there is a lack of research investigating the presence of pathogens in arthropods. Specifically, within the order Dipt…

Antimicrobial Use in Companion Animals: Assessing Veterinarians' Prescription Patterns through the First National Survey in Chile.

Although the relationship between the use of antimicrobials and the development of resistant bacteria is well established, information about the use of antimicrobials in companion animals has been poorly described, which represents a risk to public health. The aim of this study was to describe the antimicrobial prescription patterns of Chilean companion animal veterinarians. A nationally distributed survey targeted at companion animal veterinarians was designed. The survey included questions about the veterinarian's demographics, bacterial diseases treated, prescribed antimicrobials, and the u…
