OBJECTIVE: To obtain epidemiological information on rabies in bats in Texas.
DESIGN: Epidemiological study.
SAMPLE: Laboratory reports of bats that had been submitted for rabies testing in Texas from 2001 through 2010.
PROCEDURES: Laboratory reports were reviewed to obtain information on seasonality of rabies in bats; distribution, species, and rabies virus variants of rabid bats; and human and domestic animal exposures to rabid bats.
RESULTS: The number of rabid bats during the first 5 years of the study period remained static until a > 2-fold increase in 2006; during the subsequent 4 yea

INTRODUCTION: The Polo da Alta Sorocabana Laboratory in Presidente Prudente, SP, in partnership with other research institutions, conducted studies related to bats from the western region of the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. Thus, certain situations were investigated, including: a) isolation of the rabies virus from 2006 to 2008; b) identification of respective antigenic variants; and c) characterization of daytime shelters of Desmodus rotundus vampire bats.
METHODS: Samples for examination originated from nonhematophagous bats forwarded to the laboratory and subjected to direct fluorescent ant

The incidence of human rabies in the United States has decreased significantly over the past century. This analysis examines the ecological status of rabies in Louisiana with the intent of identifying differences in risk of rabies transmission from exposures to different species of animals. Louisiana presently harbors one terrestrial variant of rabies, a skunk variant, and several bat variants. Surveillance data collected from 1988 through 2007 were examined, comparing areas of the state characterized by circulating terrestrial variants and areas free of terrestrial rabies. Nine state public h

Unlike any other human infection, encephalitis caused by dog rabies virus is always fatal. Rabies and other lyssaviruses have been found in unexpected places, and human disease, especially paralytic rabies, has gone unrecognised. Evidence is emerging that rabies-related bat lyssaviruses are enzootic across Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia, but none has been detected in the Americas. The epidemiology and origins of African lyssaviruses are discussed. Ideal rabies prophylaxis (pre-exposure immunisation followed by post-exposure booster vaccination) has proved 100% effective; hence all human de

This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the pathogenicity of rabies virus isolated from bats and dogs, and to verify the efficacy of a commercial rabies vaccine against these isolates. For evaluation of pathogenicity, mice were inoculated by the intramuscular route (IM) with 500MICLD₅₀/0.03 mL of the viruses. The cross-protection test was performed by vaccinating groups of mice by the subcutaneous route and challenged through the intracerebral (IC) route. Isolates were fully pathogenic when inoculated by the IC route. When inoculated intramuscularly, the pathogenicity observed showed diff

The meridional serotine bat Eptesicus isabellinus is found in North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. We analyzed the genetic structure of E. isabellinus at two different geographic scales to reveal the historical and ecological patterns that have shaped its populations. The role of the Straits of Gibraltar as an isolating barrier between African and Iberian populations is evaluated and the degree of genetic structure and female-mediated gene flow was assessed at a local scale between neighboring colonies. Populations of E. isabellinus from Iberia and northern Morocco show little genetic diver

Two common bat lyssavirus species have been identified in many European countries: European bat lyssavirus type-1 and -2 (EBLV-1 and EBLV-2). Only limited knowledge on the susceptibility of the natural EBLV-hosts, insectivorous bats, to lyssavirus infection is available. Our study was undertaken to evaluate the susceptibility and pathology associated with an EBLV-1 infection in Eptesicus fuscus following different routes of virus inoculation including intracranial (n = 6), intramuscular (n = 14), oral (n = 7) and intranasal (n = 7). Blood and saliva samples were collected from all bats on a mo

Prolonged epididymal sperm storage in vespertilionid and rhinolophid bats, provides an interesting experimental model for the study of spermatozoa epididymal maturation. We examined the presence of the cytoplasmic droplet, and the sequential induction of capacitation and the acrosome reaction in spermatozoa obtained from different epididymal regions (caput, corpus, cauda) throughout the annual reproductive cycle of Corynorhinus mexicanus (C. mexicanus). This is a vespertilionid bat that stores spermatozoa in the epididymis for several months after testes regression. The number of sperm recover

The previous study of the evolutionary rates of European bat lyssavirus type 1 (EBLV-1) used a strict molecular clock to estimate substitution rates of the nucleoprotein gene and in turn times of the most recent common ancestor (tMRCA) of the entire genotype and the two major EBLV-1 lineages (EBLV-1A and EBLV-1B). The results of that study suggested that the evolutionary rate of EBLV-1 was one of the lowest recorded for RNA viruses and that genetic diversity of EBLV-1 arose 500-750 years ago. Here I have shown that the use of a relaxed molecular clock (allowing branch rates to vary within a ph

Rabies transmission by wild animals has not being controlled satisfactorily. One major rabies vector to humans and cattle is the hematophagous vampire bat Desmodus rotundus whose distribution is still increasing in the Americas. Of all of the strategies currently in place to control this vector, none of them are really specific and some have ecological impacts. In the present study we used a naturally occurring phytoestrogen on a small vampire bat colony. After collection, bats were fed bovine blood containing 200 microg coumestrol for a 30-day period. After treatment, gonads were excised and

We investigated movements of female big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) roosting in maternity colonies in buildings in Fort Collins, Colorado (USA), during the summers of 2002, 2003, and 2005. This behavior can be of public health concern where bats that may carry diseases (e.g., rabies) move among buildings occupied by people. We used passive integrated transponders (PIT tags) to mark individual bats and hoop PIT readers at emergence points to passively monitor the use of building roosts by marked adult females on a daily basis during the lactation phase of reproduction. Multi-strata models wer

The first case report of rabies in bats of the species Nyctinomops laticaudatus, in the city of Rio de Janeiro City, is presented. Virus isolation and titration were performed in different tissues, and high titers were found in the brain and salivary glands. Rabies occurrence in such an infrequent species in this state suggests that the disease may be more prevalent than it appears to be.

The Nipah virus outbreak in Malaysia (September 1998 to May 1999) resulted in 265 cases of acute encephalitis with 105 deaths, and near collapse of the billion-dollar pig-farming industry. Because it was initially attributed to Japanese encephalitis, early control measures were ineffective, and the outbreak spread to other parts of Malaysia and nearby Singapore. The isolation of the novel aetiological agent, the Nipah virus (NiV), from the cerebrospinal fluid of an outbreak victim was the turning point which led to outbreak control 2 months later. Together with the Hendra virus, NiV is now rec

In France, the passive surveillance of lyssaviruses in bats started in 1989, with the first positive case found in the East of the country. In 2000, the French bat rabies surveillance network in France was improved on the basis of the one used for the surveillance of fox rabies. The objectives of this network are to improve bat rabies surveillance by increasing the number of specimens and to provide an estimation of rabies incidence in bat populations across the country. The surveillance network is principally constituted by the network of local Veterinary Services and by the National Bat Cons

INTRODUCTION: Bat rabies represents an emerging zoonosis in Europe and the only endemic cause of rabies in France.
CASE RECORD: A 29 year-old woman was bitten at the hand by a bat. The diagnosis of bat rabies was positive and the viral strain was an European Bat Lyssavirus 1a. A combination of rabies vaccine and human rabies immune globulin was provided to the patient.
DISCUSSION: Any direct contact with a bat must be avoided. In case of exposure to bats, the postexposure treatment must associate the rabies vaccine and human rabies immune globulin because of antigenic diversity of Lyssavirus

Rhodanese was isolated and purified from the cytosolic fraction of liver tissue homogenate of the fruit bat, Eidolon helvum, by using ammonium sulphate precipitation and CM-Sephadex C-50 ion exchange chromatography. The specific activity was increased 130-fold with a 53% recovery. The K(m) values for KCN and Na(2)S(2)O(3) as substrates were 13.5 +/- 2.2mM and 19.5 +/- 0.7 mM, respectively. The apparent molecular weight was estimated by gel filtration on a Sephadex G-100 column to be 36,000 Da. The optimal activity was found at a high pH (pH 9.0) and the temperature optimum was 35 degrees C. An

Filarioid nematodes of the genus Litomosoides occur in the abdominal and (or) thoracic cavities of marsupials, rodents, and bats of the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. In this study, the phylogenetic relationships among these nematodes were estimated with a parsimony analysis of morphological characters derived from species descriptions. This nonweighted analysis produced 20 shortest trees. The monophyly of the genus was not supported in that Litomosoides thomomydis and Litomosoides westi failed to group with the other members of the genus. When these 2 taxa (parasites of pocket gophers) wer

Cytoplasmic crystalloids are abundant in the excretory ducts of the accessory submandibular gland of the long-winged bat, Miniopterus magnator. The crystalloids, which always lack a membranous enclosure, may have an intricate silhouette. They consist of parallel linear densities with a 12.5 nm periodicity. These densities actually may be thin-walled tubules. In some crystalloids, intersecting subcrystalloids produce a complex pattern of decussate densities. In a few rare instances, continuities were detected between a crystalloid and a smooth-surfaced cisternal element. In other mammalian spec
