Improvement of disease prediction and modeling through the use of meteorological ensembles: human plague in Uganda.

Climate and weather influence the occurrence, distribution, and incidence of infectious diseases, particularly those caused by vector-borne or zoonotic pathogens. Thus, models based on meteorological data have helped predict when and where human cases are most likely to occur. Such knowledge aids in targeting limited prevention and control resources and may ultimately reduce the burden of diseases. Paradoxically, localities where such models could yield the greatest benefits, such as tropical regions where morbidity and mortality caused by vector-borne diseases is greatest, often lack high-qua

Forecasting Dengue Hotspots Associated With Variation in Meteorological Parameters Using Regression and Time Series Models.

For forecasting the spread of dengue, monitoring climate change and its effects specific to the disease is necessary. Dengue is one of the most rapidly spreading vector-borne infectious diseases. This paper proposes a forecasting model for predicting dengue incidences considering climatic variability across nine cities of Maharashtra state of India over 10 years. The work involves the collection of five climatic factors such as mean minimum temperature, mean maximum temperature, relative humidity, rainfall, and mean wind speed for 10 years. Monthly incidences of dengue for the same locations a

Season-dependent phenological responses and implications for co-occurring plants and butterflies under climate anomalies and extreme weather events.

Despite extensive work on climate-driven phenological shifts, research has focused primarily on early-season events, single metrics and gradual shifts in mean climate, limiting insights into phenological responses across the full annual cycle. Using a 17-year dataset (2009-2025) from an old-growth forest, we examined how co-occurring plants and butterflies responded to climate anomalies and extreme weather events (EWEs) across multiple phenological metrics and seasons, and whether variation in their phenological overlap had ecological implications. Including EWEs substantially improved model p

'A ward full of emotional, aggressive people': Social climate and interpersonal relationships in forensic settings caring for patients with borderline personality disorder.

Therapeutic relationships play a central role in maintaining a positive social climate in forensic settings. The interpersonal difficulties characteristic of Borderline Personality Disorder, alongside the secure environment of forensic wards, can make developing positive therapeutic relationships with this patient group challenging. Qualitative interviews aimed to explore how ward staff understand and experience the interaction of interpersonal relationships and social climate when caring for patients with Borderline Personality Disorder on forensic wards. Interviews with 11 staff members work

Effect of Climatic Factors on Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease in South Korea, 2010-2013.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) causes characteristic blisters and sores mainly in infants and children, and has been monitored in South Korea through sentinel surveillance since 2009. We described the patterns of HFMD occurrence and analyzed the effect of climatic factors on national HFMD incidence. Weekly clinically diagnosed HFMD case rates (per 1,000 outpatients) in sentinel sites and weekly climatic factors, such as average temperature, relative humidity, duration of sunshine, precipitation, and wind speed from 2010 to 2013, were used in this study. A generalized additive model with

Assessment of the probability of introduction of Thaumatotibia leucotreta into the European Union with import of cut roses.

Following a request from the European Commission, the EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a quantitative pest risk assessment to assess whether the import of cut roses provides a pathway for the introduction of Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) into the EU. The assessment was limited to the entry and establishment steps. A pathway model was used to assess how many T. leucotreta individuals would survive and emerge as adults from commercial or household wastes in an EU NUTS2 region climatically suitable in a specific season. This pathway model for entry consisted of three com

Spatio-temporal agent-based modelling of malaria.

Plasmodium falciparum is responsible for the majority of malaria morbidity and mortality each year. Malaria transmission rates vary by location and time of year due to climate and environmental conditions. We show the impact of these factors by developing a stochastic spatiotemporal agent-based malaria model that captures the impact of spatially distributed interventions on malaria transmission. Our model uses spatiotemporal estimates of mosquito climatic suitability and household location data to model the interaction between human and mosquito agents. We apply our model to investigate how st

Combating cholera by building predictive capabilities for pathogenic Vibrio cholerae in Yemen.

Cholera remains a global public health threat in regions where social vulnerabilities intersect with climate and weather processes that impact infectious Vibrio cholerae. While access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities limit cholera outbreaks, sheer cost of building such infrastructure limits the ability to safeguard the population. Here, using Yemen as an example where cholera outbreak was reported in 2016, we show how predictive abilities for forecasting risk, employing sociodemographical, microbiological, and climate information of cholera, can aid in combating disease outbrea

Heat stress drives increases in phytoplankton cell size in future oligotrophic oceans.

Warming and nutrient limitation are major stressors that affect primary production in the ocean, with cascading impacts on the food web. Yet, we lack a mechanistic understanding of how phytoplankton manage multiple stressors and the implications of these responses for phytoplankton biogeography. By combining theory, proteome allocation modeling, and climate projections, we identified two potential competing strategies for multi-stressor growth: (1) nutrient efficient smaller cells or (2) heat-tolerant larger cells. We found that Prochlorococcus are more vulnerable in warmer, "heat-stressed", t

Assessing the ecological and economic transformation pathways of plastic production system.

Plastic's incredible versatility drives its continuous production growth, contributing to 4.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. With an unsustainable 4% annual production growth rate, plastics' environmental impact is significant. Our study, using climate and economic models, assesses the effects of a voluntary plastic levy imposed on the top 100 resin producers. The results suggest a potential 70% reduction in global plastic production emissions by 2050, lowering emissions from business-as-usual levels to 1.62 Gt CO2e. The proposed USD 82.5 billion levy over 25 years could fund recyc

Understanding Suitable Habitats and Anthropogenic Mortality Risks for King Cobras in Nepal.

The king cobra (Ophiophagus hannah), the world's largest venomous snake, is a vulnerable species with an expanding distribution in Nepal. This study modeled its current climatically suitable habitat and predicted future changes (2050 and 2070) under the SSP2-4.5 climate change scenario. Using 553 occurrence records and a combination of climate and topographic variables, we developed an ensemble habitat suitability model in BIOMOD2, identifying 23,702.62 km2 of suitable habitat. Under the SSP2-4.5 scenario, the king cobra's climatically suitable habitat is projected to decline by 22% by 2050, w

Seasonality in the proportions of domestic cats shedding Toxoplasma gondii or Hammondia hammondi oocysts is associated with climatic factors.

A previous study on domestic cats in Germany and neighbouring countries suggested seasonality in shedding Toxoplasma gondii oocysts. The aim of the present study was to elucidate whether this seasonality in shedding could be explained by climatic effects and whether differences between years in the proportions of cats shedding oocysts could also be explained by climatic factors. To this end, a long-term study over a period of 55 months on domestic cats for T. gondii and Hammondia hammondi oocysts was performed and the results compared with climatic data. Using species-specific PCR, T. gondii o
